How to Sync Bookmarks Across Multiple Browsers

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

Over the years, you may collect a ton of bookmarks within your browser. Let’s say you change browsers, or even Operating Systems. How can you sync all of your links between the browsers, and how can you make sure that the links are still good?

AM-DeadLink detects dead links and duplicates in browser bookmarks and text files. If a bookmark has become unavailable you can verify and delete it permanently. Additionally you can download FavIcons for all your Favorites and Bookmarks.

AM-DeadLink can check the following resources:

  • Internet Explorer Favorites
  • Firefox bookmarks
  • Opera bookmarks
  • Mozilla and Netscape bookmarks
  • URLs from tab delimited text files
  • URLs from comma separated text files

Unfortunately, AM-Deadlink is only for Windows. For a Mac, you can try BookDog. Bookdog allows users to sort (selectively alphabetize), import/export, migrate, verify, find redirects, search, and find duplicates among their bookmarks collections in Safari, Firefox 1.5-3.0, Camino, Google Bookmarks, del.icio.us, OmniWeb, Opera, Shiira 2.x and Netscape Navigator. Migrations can be scheduled using Apple’s Automator, and bookmarks on other networked Macs or backup disks are easily accessible. Bookdog has a 14-day free trial. After that, the cost is just $19.95.

After you install Bookdog, you spend a few minutes adjusting how you want your bookmarks sorted, click Sort and within seconds your bookmarks are all in order! Click Analyze to find duplicates and then eliminate those you don’t want. Open the Preferences, activate Bookwatchdog, and your bookmarks will be re-sorted after you make changes. Automatically. Do you seem to have alot of bookmarks that don’t work anymore? Tell Bookdog to Verify. He’ll make a quick visit to all the websites you have bookmarked, present a report of their responses, give you some options on how he can automatically fix bookmarks that have been “redirected”, and finally present a handy tool which allows you to quickly review and fix the remainder. Using Camino, Firefox, Opera, del.icio.us, Shiira, Google Bookmarks™ and/or OmniWeb in addition to Safari? When you tell him to Migrate your bookmarks between browsers, he finds the right folder and avoids creating duplicates. You can migrate unilaterally (one-way) or bilaterally, “synchronizing” all missing bookmarks between browsers. And you can do so from an AppleScript or schedule Migrations using Apple’s Automator.

Can some one please tell me what Chris’ ringtone is called and where to find it? I really want this tone.

Harry Nilsson - Reservoir Dogs - Coconut

Chris sure likes a “clean interface”.

Hey Chris I use google browser sync. It doesn’t support multiple browsers but it is an extension for firefox. The cool thing is you can install it on many computers and use one account to sync the bookmarks, history, and even restore the last web pages you were on. Check it out. http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/index.html

I have had a problem with bookmarks ever since I can remember. Jumping to over PC’s and not having the same bookmarks. What I usually did was just save them in firefox and use that as the base for everything. And it’s still what I do. But I will go ahead and try what you think is best =)

In the past, I have also tried out Powermarks–a bookmark synchronization program created by Kaylon Technologies. Unfortunately, that program is no longer being updated.

Chris you videos are good :=(Y)
please Ceep it!
and be a geek its natural thing

Hello,

I, like idiotonuni use Google browser sync, and I think it would be good to add to your list.

Yes, it is for firefox only.

The things I like about it the most are:

1. It is OS independent, and I use it on three computers running two different operating systems (xp, linux)
2. It remembers my last session and can restore it to a separate computer
3. It runs in the background, and keeps my bookmarks the same on every computer.

why do you have your face on your laptop

Opera 9.5 will include a sync feature for desktop, mobile, and a website you can log into for this.

he hates the apple logo lol

Another great bookmark sync program for the Mac is Bookit. I have been using it for quite some time and it has some really great features. It’s only $12 and supports pretty much every browser written for the Mac. Here’s a link to their site: http://www.everydaysoftware.net/bookit/

hello chris great show i would watch you 24 7 if i could

Great video Chris keep up the good work.

I find google browser sync has fitted my needs for a while now. With it, I don’t have to think about what bookmarks are on which computer. I have had a few problems where it does some funkiness with the synching and I get duplicates, but that’s not a biggie with search now a days.

After viewing this video I downloaded AM Deadlink and it truly helped. I switch across browsers between MSIE, Firefox, and now (thanks to Chris’s suggestion) Safari. Synching my bookmarks is most definitely something that needed to be done, and my browsing is more efficient now because of it. Thanks Chris!

Ah, Bookmarks, well the best way to have the same bookmarks across the different browsers, even though it may be a bit uncovential is to use a toolbar such as Google Toolbar, and if you have a Gmail Account it will remember those bookmarks when you log in.

Chris.. personally.. the easiest way I’ve found is .Mac. I know that it’s kinda expensive and perhaps not worth it.. but for what you get… it’s really nice! I love it. I can have all my macs sync’ed as I add things to one computer… and by the time I get to the other… it’s there. How sweet is that?!?!?

jesus, that guy would just not shut up.

Yes! this will help me alot! Thank you!

I took a look at that page and i’m thinking about putting all my bookmarks up on their. I use like 3 different computers and it’s a little troublesome to export all my bookmarks to those computers because of the time it takes to load the page then bookmark it. Then after putting the bookmarks on going through and putting them in a folder to separate the different types they are.

I’m a big fan of what you are doing trying to bring tech in an open form to talk about 24/7 with people who know what they are talking about. Even though you switched to a mac I wont hold it against you lol. later.

Too bad there isn’t a way to transfer the bookmarks toolbar in firefox to like opera or safari.

I have a ton of favorites that I have accumulated over the years, and I think I’m going to use one of those programs to help me out. Thanks Chris. :)

Hi chris, thanks again cause i really needed to learn how to do this cause i just got a mac and i needed to figure the browser thing out. Thanks again

On FF you can export your bookmarks by going to the Oraganize Bookmarks windows and clicking file > export.

Hi chris, I find these suggestions highly useful, I’ve been trying to sort through the hundreds, maybe thousands of bookmarks throughout the browsers that I use (firefox, Safari, internet explorer). thank you!

I just save my firefox bookmarks as a html doc and it will import into other browsers

I generally just use Foxmarks for “PC - to - PC” bookmark synchronization in Firefox!

I thought this was an awesome post. i like to reinstall linux and windows alot and never kepted up with my links which got me mad. I love your videos and what not and you need to keep giving teh tech comunity or your communty info.
cheers

I don’t get it, why don’t people just stick with ONE browser?

.Mac syncs all of my bookmarks across all of my macs. Its really easy to do. Also, I have my iPhone which can sunc bookmarks from iphone to mac, mac to iphone. Web services are also good. Thanks chris

I use foxmarks all the time between all my computers

This comes in handy when using multiple computers. Thanks for the help Chris.

I saw this stream live and I thought it was great! Keep it up Chris.

Yes! this will help me alot! Thank you!

Firefox Bookmarks FTW

this is so cool u rock chris

I have to say that .Mac is the simplest and easiest way for mac AND windows IF you are using the Safari Browser for both platforms. Plus, you’ll be getting all the other stuff that comes with it. It’s just so easy, with your other stuff in sync as well.

That caller was really good at stating/repeating the obvious

Since you can move bookmarks from browser to browser, would it be possible to move it to another computer? This is certainly something to at least look into and it would help considering I’ve been using the pen&paper technique for too long now.

Also, is there something similar to this for COOKIES?

Great tip

I keep my FireFox bookmarks backed up through their export feature. I keep the html file created on my portable HD that way I can just pull up any favorite I need no matter if I am on my desktop or my laptop.

If I used more than one browser, I would surely try the AM-Deadlink out though. :)

I use Foxmarks. But it is only for firefox tho.

I think this is REALLY good =D.
Never though it could be done, but hey Chris said it lol.

Thanks, really useful I like this thanks!

I like your idea that we need to rethink where we are storing things. I chose the Google solution just to keep links straight between two browsers on the same computer.

Certain information belongs on the network not on the desktop, and we’re not used to that yet. Today sync is used to maintain multiple islands of information. The network allows everything to work off the same copy of the data.

Now what sync can do for me is to automatically maintain a backup copy of e-mail, contacts, etc., on my desktop. Any desktop I want. Then, when the network link is severed (not if), I have a working of my information. E-Mail already supports an off-line mode, other software will follow suite.

We need to think differently because we have different tools and resources available to us. Let me tell you how I am thinking differently. That’s not Outlook’s e-mail, That’s my e-mail. And those are my contacts too. And your new software better talk to my data, as is, because I’m not upgrading again. My data is in an open standards format that everyone can talk to. Get use to it.

The next version of your software better be good or I’m not buying. For years you have forced upgrades on me and provided inadequate tools for data migration and inter-operability. Well I’m not changing again until you can provide me with a compelling reason to do so. At which time I will gladly pay you.

I tried Foxmarks but would prefer not to use central services that I don’t manage. Used to use AM-Deadlink way back in the days of Windows. It will work to some extent on linux… I got it to see Firefox and Opera.

Now I bite my lip and just do it manually. With two OSes and three browsers per OS, it’s not gonna be pretty, no matter which solution I try. I keep one browser’s bookmarks as the master, then dump to a centrally-located html file. I can point any of my browsers at the html file as home or a bookmark.

Another alternative is to make the html file local to all the browsers and use it as the home page.

I wonder Chris’s income is?

thanks for the info it works so thank you

“It’s free so you can’t expect much”
What a nOOb comment it that again Pirillo?! So I guess Linux, MYSQL, PHP, Firebird, etc all suck. Get real buddy, you’re such an overrated wannabe “expert”!

Here’s another endorsement for Google Browser Sync. I’ve found it to be perfect for my needs, although it does not filter out dead links, which is a feature I never really thought about needing until I read this blog post. Go figure.

I’m not sure if Google Browser Sync works on Firefox for OSX, but it does work on Linux, so that’s at least two OS’s that are covered.

this video is awesome i as wondering how to this and im glad u answered mine along with mny other peoples ty chris have a great day

he never said they suck. He just said it might not be as good as something you pay for.

I suggest that at all cost, stay away from online services that store your information that you cannot control - your data will be mined! Nothing in life is free.

Otherwise, request that the browser you use support direct use of or automatic sync to favorites. If not, only use browsers that do. I had to just bite the bullet and switch from a browser of 4+ years because I was tired of manual link management. Since then I have found the features of old trusty with optional direct use of favorites in another browser.

In my opinion, there is no point in keeping bookmarks in the browser or even syncronize them between browsers and computers. I use Online-Bookmarks.

I’m a lazy person and don’t like typing, so clicking a little link on the left of the browser is much more lazy-friendly than typing out what you need in google. On top of that, sometimes I search google for 20-30 minutes before finding what I am looking for, and I have a bad memory when it comes to remembering URL’s. Bookmarks are an important part of my daily internet use.

her keep the Firefox bookmarks on all her computers synchronized. **Note: I sure wish somebody would come up with a program that would allow me to synch my bookmarks across all the different browsers I use. Since we did this show, I watched a video byChris Pirillo of Lockergnomein which he recommended AM Deadlink for synchronizing bookmarks for IE, Firefox and Opera. It also check for bookmarks that no longer work. Kim did say she was very happy that Flock imported all her FF bookmarks and passwords for password protected

Well, AM-DeadLink is not bad, but it does NOT support Unicode - useless if not Latin-1 characters are used.

What Do You Think?
