How to Start a Website

Have you ever wanted to have your own Website? Do you know how to go about getting started? Here are some tips sent in by Lewis that may shed some light on these questions… and more.

  • Don’t go for the cheapest hosting. These may look great at first, but from what I have found out, they are not. The support is often bad, the servers are often cheap and slow and you do not get what you pay for. Try to look for a respectable one with many reviews. We recommend GoDaddy. Use coupon code Chris1 to save 10% off your order!
  • Learn how to code and design. The worst way to start a website is with no coding experience or design experience. This is often the thoughts of many new website owners and it puts users off. You need to take time out of your life to code and design properly, you will get much more out of the site this way.
  • Don’t swarm your site with adverts. Often, too many ads put off users and they will not come back. If you must, put at the most 3 adverts on a page, that is the maximum. I’m pretty sure you hate websites with loads of adverts, think of your users.
  • Get a proper domain name. Often free domains names like (.tk, .us.tt ect) are bad, full of frames with adverts in them and are often having problems. I recommend getting one from a respectable seller, e.g.: Godaddy. There are many coupons around for godaddy, Chris has a few, type !coupon into his chat.
  • And finally, give your users a way to contact you. This could be a contact form, an email link (make sure to obscure it in an image or flash file to keep bots off your site and selling your address) or anything else. Your users might need your help and without a good clear link to contact, they will not email you and you will lose their business. Many users are not going to bother looking through Whois databases for an address.

Im goin to register my website at one(dot)com
but right now its registred at freewebs :O

I’m going to disagree with point 2 that was submitted.

You do not need experience in programming when buying a website. I had no clue what I was doing and now I am pretty efficient with a number of web languages and designing.

I want to say something on the second topic of your top 5 list. It says “Learn the Coding and Web Design”. You can’t learn this stuff for 3 or 4 days, it takes months (and years) of hard working to learn this. There are also Faculties (also in my country) to get knowledge of Coding and Web Design, and other IT stuff.

this 12 year old doesnt know what his talking about

It is bishop stort-ford! I live about 10 mins away from there!

I have had a site since I was EIGHT!!!

Thanks Chris.
I have just started building a website, and i think i am getting the hang of it. Now i have to face the daunting task of promoting and advertising my website. I emailed Chris a while ago and have not recieved a reply. I was wondering if the .ca domain is recognized in the US or should i just stick with .com?

YES! Restaurants, post your hours! I could not agree more. It’s so annoying!

I think some of the tips were great for web enthusiasts, but some for people who are new to the Internet.

it took me about about 2 years fully understand c++ but i imagine that that html is more difficult as sites become more graphicly complex using java or adobe flash which also would be a very useful thing to learn unless you have the money to outsource it

where is the video of his dog?

i think planning what your website will be is a key factor too.
some people will have an idea but if you’re new to it, it’s best to have an idea what your site will be (i.e. personal, home/small business, portfolio, ect.)

I am so temptated to teach him how to say it….. Expect a video response also lgregb you are correct. I live in Bishop’s Stortford.

yes i am 14, at least I actually write in to help the community, if you have any better tips, why don’t you write in yourself.

at least I write in to help the community. why don’t you do it if you are better?

keithcry, please stop following me.

hey, remember the video about the hard drives, from 14 year old Liam, its me!

Good video chris,I would suggest for a starter using Freewebs.com for a basic webhost.

Also after learning HTML if you still need more Learn CSS for a mark up coding Language.

Once you’ve determined your language of choice, locate the popular forums for that language. For example, if you’re going the ASP.NET route, you’d want to visit forums.msdn.com, http://www.asp.net, and channel9.msdn.com . Forums connect you directly to the big guys in the development world and will help you get answers fast.

Practice your Google-Fu. Usually, if you get exceptions / errors at runtime, you can easily goodle the error and find the source. However, sometimes you have more complex issues that don’t involve errors. Googling is faster than using the Forums, and it’s better Nettiquite.

I found dreamhost to be a great hosting company. I’ve been a part of them for over 5 years now, and pay around 20 bucks a year for the hosting, and another 30 or so a year for my domains.

I also advise learning html as your first website language. It was the first language I learned, and then I learned PHP.

Oh, and please, do not use comic sans ms. thanks. haha.

I agree, I hate websites with a lot of adverts.

he watches too much star trek or something

me…I’m now starting to make a website…
And I do not even really know About Html…
If you want a website builder just find
“Bluevoda” in google…It’s a drag and drop website builder… Just pictk a picture and drop it on your website page….

im only 13, im english. its great advise but i dont know what to do a site on? and also how to pay for it

I have had a site for about a week or two at http://www.vistadude123.ismywebsite.com
and I use ismywebsite.com for a server, it is free and I find very good. I just want to say you don’t always need to pay for a server, now you probably do to get a site address with out a little word or phrase which is the name of the server.

EX. t35.com, 110Mb.com, ismywebsite.com (all of which are actual servers.)

If you want to find a free server and don’t mind having T35 in your URL then go to http://www.free-webhosts.com and do a search to find a free server.

P.S. You don’t need expensive software to make a website you can get many free ones. Or do what I did and use what you got. You may be shocked what you can do with Microsoft Office programs if you know what you are doing. I used Microsoft Publisher for http://www.vistadude123.ismywebsite.com.

If you want transitions, use PowerPoint just make sure you adjust the settings so you don’t get a navigation bar like in M.S. PowerPoint its self.

And you probably will need a FTP client. I recommend FileZilla it is a good free ftp client for windows and works on Vista.

awesome, nice to meet you.

Really, the number of advertisements on a page usually isn’t an issue most of the time. As long as the content is good, and there aren’t any video ads or any of the annoying link ads in the content, then most visitors will block out the periphery.

The link ads are the worst. At least with the video ads there’s usually a way to turn them off.

And I made my first webpage back in 1992, about the time I signed up for my first email newsletter, Lockergnome.

Hey, I was wondering if you had read this review. http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/software/contentcreation/0,1000001069,39291210,00.htm

I am looking to start a site and it makes it sound like Terapad is no.1 for free websites, but would be interested to hear your comments. Thanks.

Good point about physical stores posting their hours of operation. I can’t tell you how annoying it is that so many don’t for whatever reason. And then restaurants that don’t post a menu or one with no detail. Another major annoyance are grocery stores that can’t list what they sell so I don’t waste my time going there. I wish they could all list what they have in stock so I don’t have to sit on the phone or waste my time looking for it at the store.

The hours of operation is definitely a top 5 for what physical store fronts should have on their website. Restaurants without complete menus along with prices is also annoying. Grocery stores should also list everything they have in stock so we can go to the store that has the product we want. So many sites, especially from local places, seem to have nothing on it of any use. It’s as if they feel they need a token web presence.

Im 13 ive had a site for 2 years.. if your making a new site learn html before you do. css is also a must for good designs. php is then the next step, php is for logins, forms ect.

Hahhaa, true, I hate those stores that don’t post hours. I don’t go to the store just cause of that

I’ve had a website since I was 10.

Awsome, thanks!
I’ll use this

Nice site, I am starting my own website soon and you have pithy info. what a relief. I do not know much about it and am considering running my blog from my website, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Thanks Chris
