Every day I get a half dozen e-mails telling me I’ve won a foreign lottery or asking for help to get money out of Africa. I wonder who falls for these things, but someone must or they wouldn’t keep doing it.

Scammers have been always there, they are just changing how to make the scam. In the past was postal mail or by phone as your dad. Then e-mail like the Nigerian scam. Probably today is social networks and twitter (or micro-blogging) is gonna be next.
But, that is our nature. We humans tend to evaluate risk vs. benefit, and we are greedy. So we are a little blind as well and that is why we fall in scams. So little to lose and too much to win, but rarely we will win (except for the scammer).
Bruce Schneier has a very interesting post in his blog about this “risk assessment”, unfortunately I cannot find it.
