How to Make a Cool Windows Vista Screensaver

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

DreamScene on Vista allows you to run a video as a wallpaper. Unfortunately, I can’t use it. Vista claims my monitors are too big. That’s ok, I’m not giving them up. I did, however, discover a very cool trick awhile back to run a screen saver behind my active windows.

First you’ll need to open a command prompt. To do this:

  • Click on Start, then Run
  • Type cmd and click the Enter key on your keyboard.

Once the command window is open, you’ll need to type in the name of the screensaver you want, followed by p65552. For example, if you want the Ribbons screensaver running behind your windows, you would type the following in the Command window:

ribbons.scr /p65552

Be sure to note the space between .scr and the /p65552.

Voila! Isn’t this cool? You can now see the ribbons running behind all of my active windows, instead of just a blank desktop.

It is somewhat cool, but looks like it would get annoying

does it take up a lot of ram or cpu?

one more thing, can you get this to work in a dual monitor setup? that would be cool.

You can do this quite easily on Mac OS as well.

ribbons.scr /p65552 This works but i cant get to any of my desktop icons. But its pretty cool. I did bubbles and it really mist things up on my pc anyway.

winamp will let you do something like this, did it back when

30 inch motintor x`s… ha ha ha lol im watching this video in my 65 inch 1080p tv 30“ x`2 ha ha aaahhhhh lol you kill me chris good job on your videos i love em.

5 stars!!! I was wondering if that could be done. But Chris, you didn’t make it clear where to look for the command line or how to get some other cool videos in the screen saver program. Where did you get The Matrix screen saver and how did you manage to put it into the Screen Saver program??

i told him how to do that when i was in chat a few weeks ago

chris i was the one that told you that in chat i think it was when my user name was techey21 or my new one the_master

Dreamscene does use a marginal amount of CPU, (5-10% when programs are not full screen). Most of the work is offloaded to the GPU. It does work on a dual monitor setup. I like streaming the matrix code on dual 24″ monitors. I’ve gotten many comments from clients who are impressed with the eye candy.

Hey Chris, I am using Vista Home Premium and it works just fine :D. This means that if it is possible to get this to work in Premium, then it should theoretically work in Basic, Business, and maybe even starter.

Dreamscene works fine on my dell 3007wfp 30″ :/

Yo chris can this trick of yours work with windows xp as well?

I thought he “upgraded” from vista to xp

where did you get that screen saver and how much did it cost if anything

Cheers Chris, you’re a Legend!

I never knew about it, but it’s amazing! Hardly any drop in Performance :)

is there something like that for XP ??????

is there something like that for XP ?????

Eh, patched version of dreamscene for vista(non ultimate) ftw

How do you undo this–it seems to have made all my other screensavers unstable–they blink on and off erratically when used.

it sorta works. i’m using vista premium and i set the aurora screensaver, but it’s not in the background. it runs over everything else, i can’t see anything unless it’s moving(like a video) or if i mouse over something

do you just play around with this box code thing every day?

Hey, i don’t want to be mean or anything, but this doesn’t work when i do it by myself. So, if one of you out there could please help, because my computer isn’t much help at this time. Alright, so i downloaded a Matrix.scr file because Chris had a great idea, and i tought it would look cool. Now, after I extracted the downlaoded file, i copied the file directly into this directory :

C:\Windows\

After doing this, I went to my Start button, typed cmd and pressed ENTER. Now everything was going fine, I even checked the file before copying it into the directory, and it worked perfectly fine. Now i type :

Matrix.scr /p65552

A windows windows popped up saying : Windows is looking for a solution… It did nothing, but shut the program down. Now, I am running on Windows Vista Premium, and this is a newly bought computer, I checked my hardware and software, nothing was wrong. Could someone please help me out?

i would like to find something like that for XP as well, send me a pm please if you have something

How do you disable guys….from CMD????

omg, it freakin works, i got vista home basic and it works, i tried ribbons and it was really nice. thanks

how do you get other ones to work?

doesn’t work on windows XP Pro

@endless031: Yes, there is a free tool called XPScene. The tool generates a html-page wraping the windows media player to play original dreamscene videos. You can set the html-file as wallpaper like e.g. any jpg-file.

Thats great man, hella cool =)
5/5!!!!!! All the way

i got it to work but now i can’t open my desktop stuff unless i use my short cut in my tool bar how do you get it so i can still us my stuff (vista prem)

at 54 seconds chrise was a true nerd but you gotta luv him huh!

thanx man i love everything your doing=]

to kill it from the command prompt type:
taskkill /f /im ribbons.scr

where did u get a matrix screen saver bcos its really cool

cuz you need vista..

mwuahhah you cant >:D

i am running *** vista now but it just runs the screen saver and makes all my stuff blink… and takes forever to close it cause i can’t see what i’m doing when it blinks I guess i need a better video card? Dirrect 3D?

ummm yeeaahhh, this is pretty cool.
BUT!
All your icons is invisible, you cant even press on them,
“Ribbons” is “minimized” and when you press on it you have to press ctrl+alt+delete and remove Ribbons.
Its gone when you restart.

lol TIMES 2!!! .. uhhum! ty dell.. LOL

WOAH **** THATS AWESOME U HAVE 2 MONITORS.. FOR 1 COMP!! THATS AWESOME.. even though i dont have it how do u make it for 1 comp like that?

on your graphics card you should have two outputs plug one vdu into each one..
then goto grphics settings and select 2 monitors..then you should see all sorts of setting for it… easy to use

nice .., but Screen2Dream (freeware) automates the steps to run a screensaver as wallpaper (works on XP and Vista). No command line hacking needed ;)

nice computer… i guess

what do i have to type in to play a video?

thanks man

great post “cyberbobb”…. the program works great without all the command line hassles!

ive tested it on windows 7 build 6956 works great

Sorry for the typos in the previous message. This one is corrected.

Thanks for the hack for DreamScene. It worked on my Vista Home Premium with the default screensavers ribbons, aurora, bubbles and mystify. However, it covered up my desktop icons and only windows sidebar gadgets were visible. I had to use task manager to quit the dreamscene. Is there another way to quit it and how can I see my icons with the dreamscene in the background? Will this work with .wmv and other video formats as well? What do you think of using instead VideoLAN’s VLC Player and BS.Player, with or without the adware? Thanks in advance for your answers. Tony

i know this might sound retarded but im wondering if its possible to use the command prompt & list the file names of some pics i have on my vista os & turn them into a screensaver?

id appreciate it if you could tell me if it has the possibility of working at all. thanks :p

Nice work man….. I have a question….. I have a screensaver called another matrix screen saver……. how do I put that in my background…. the other ones seem fine….. also text 3d and some others I wasn’t able to put in my background….. if someone knows how to do it… let me know

What Do You Think?
