How to Keep Your PC Clean and Fast (Speed up Tips)
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
People ask every day about ways they can keep their computer running smoothly, and how to make it faster. Here are some excellent tips that will help you accomplish both tasks. Keep those top five lists coming!
- Only install software that you need to have running on your system. Having software on your computer that you don’t actually need only increases the amount of used disk space on the said drive, whether it be your operating system drive or a secondary or external drive. If you have any software that you no longer use and would like to get rid of it, you can download a freeware program called Revo Uninstaller, which you can download for free. I can safely say that I’ve used this program to uninstall old programs I don’t use anymore or software I’ve installed just to test out. This program does a
great job of scanning the system for invalid registry entries that get left behind after using this program to uninstall your programs compared to using Add/Remove programs in the control panel. - Do some research and use before downloading any random program off the Internet. It is true that there are a lot of great free ware and shareware programs out there, but you have to understand, that the Internet is a big road to be driving on with your computer. Do your homework and do a little research about the program you wish to or are thinking about downloading and trying out. You would be surprised how much software out there is designed to give you the impression that it will do something like make your PC faster or make your Internet speed faster when in reality it will make your PC even run slower and might even have some nasties built-in! Be careful what you download!
- Don’t mess with anything inside the Operating System you know nothing about. Changing even the slightest zero to a one or one to a zero in the registry could leave your system unusable immediately or on the next reboot of the system. Don’t mess around the core of the operating system if you don’t know what you’re doing and especially if you’re only a basic user who checks E-Mail and rarely surfs the web. If you are a basic user and are still inclined to learn how to work with the inner workings of an operating system, use Google. Google is the biggest search engine and you can find just about anything on it.
- Use Anti-Virus software, even if you don’t want to pay for security software, there’s no excuse not to download a free Anti-Virus program such as AVG or Avast. I prefer AVG for performance reasons when choosing a free AV but Avast has slightly better detection rates. If you don’t care about paying for Anti-Virus software try out ESET’s NOD32, it will not slow down your system and is highly recommended by download the video:
Amaze your friends the next time they beg you to come over and fix their computer problems. Using GoToAssist, you can instantly and easily log into their computer, allowing you to quickly diagnose those pesky errors, or even help them understand how their new program works.

I like using msconfig to turn off unnecessary startup programs. I find that new computers and older computers have programs that really slow down startup times. I was able to get my Vista Laptop to boot less than one minute by turning off unnecessary processes.

Is AVG any better than McAffe Virus Protection Software? I like McAffe because is very easy to use. Also, it automatically updates itself whenever they become available. The program thoroughly scans all of your files and gives you the results pretty quick. If AVG is better, I will definitely give it a try. Thanks for the info!

Also I take and blow out my fans and keep the pc free and clear of things that can block airflow around it. The newer processors run hot and if the fans get full of dust they can cause a system to overheat. Use a can of compressed air but make sure you hold it upright or water vapor will come out and blow it out. Great video Cris!!

I like startupcpl better then using msconfig. has a bettter interface and shows things that don’t show up in msconfig. Best of all its a tiny download and standalone exe. You can run it off a flashdrive.

I cleaned out my computer a few days ago, its amazing how fast you can get stuff, forget about it, and then wonder were your hard drive space has gone. I find if a pc is not regularly maintained then it leads to BIG problems in the future.

Very helpful tips. Registry cleaners can be a mixed bag. I have had registry cleaners take my registry size down from a 110MB (which is HUGE) to 60MB, and my computer felt new again. So they are not completely useless, just be careful. The ones I use are CCleaner(registry tab), and TuneUp Utilities 2006 (2007 I am sure is fine).
Antivirus: Norton is long gone and so are other buggy and resource-hogging Antivirus applications. Use NOD32 or AVG or something with a small footprint but a powerful engine.
Make sure to defrag all drives, especially the one with Windows and Program Files / Installations, as this will have a direct effect on performance.
Also make sure to check your startup programs with something like “Startup Control Panel” by Mike Lin I think it is… or use Autoruns or some other program to make sure there aren’t tons of programs starting up with your computer that you don’t need.
Cleaning it out with air definitely helps, because it prevents heat buildup that can damage hard drives, ram, and CPUs.

You can also use cleaning programs like Easycleaner or Ccleaner. I used to use a program called System Suite Professional 7 which did everything like defrag, diagnose, and fix, aslo virus scan, spware search and also pretty much everything for cleaning you files on your computer.

One thing you never want to do is use a RAM Booster to increase performance.
As many people will tell you, this does NOT work.
Whatever is in your computer, is what you have.
I tried using a RAM booster but it never helped mainly for one reason: the RAM Booster itself was using RAM itself!

Here is what I do to keep my pc running fast and stable!
1) First, I use this free registry program, that will get rid of unneeded registry entries its called RegscrubXP.
2) After, I clean the registry I clean all of my temp files, and all of my internet files this program is called IEPrivacyKeeper. It is free I highly recommend this for those that like to keep there pc fast, and like to keep there disk space up to par!
3) After I am done with all of that, I defrag my registry it is 100% safe, and I recommend it, why, becuase it will speed up your boot time and ,compact your registry for faster installation of programs it is also 100% free, it is called Auslogics Registry Defrag.
4) When I am all done with that, I do a good defrag with windows defrag and then, I notice the results. Instantly I can tell that my computer is a hell of a lot faster then it was before i did everything.
And thats pretty much all there is to it to keeping your pc clean and fast!!!

Ok, so MSCONFIG is a great way to stop unwated programs from eating up your system, I was a big fan of that. But to tell the truth a few years ago, when I did some work for the public library in town, they purchased a program called deep freeze. I’ll tell you that was a great program what it basically did was freeze the system. Any changes you made were wiped out upon reboot. it was great for keeping viruses and spyware off the system. if it ever acted up all we did was restart it and boom bam, it was back to normal.

When i used windows i setup a shutdown script that would clear out the prefetch, temp files, internet temp, and empty the recycler on all drives whenever the computer shuts down. Doing this makes a drastic increase in performance, with an especial improvement of boot times. Another thing that really helps is running a registry cleaner every so often. Windows XP without attention will no doubt dig itself a hole, but if you learn the little tricks to keep it maintained, you can make it much more stable than most people perceive it to be.

Well i had a computer that ran for 6 months with A LOT of dust in it. Killed my power supply and soundcard and it cost me 200$. since then i invested in cans of Aerosol i used that on my dell. Now that i have an iMac i have no idea how to get in to it to clean it i hope it does not die on me. Everybody should have a can of Aerosol and know how to get in your computer.
