Spotlight is amazing ... even though I keep my files organized in folders, it's often quicker to type a word or two into Spotlight's search field.

Nice guide, lots of people I know could benefit from it.
And about the Dock, I like to keep Apps with long names in there, then use Spotlight/Quicksilver to get the ones with smaller names. Apps that have very similar names are also put in the Dock. The only stack I have is my Downloads one, but I might put my Development one there soon as well.

All this seems a little obvious. However, it is surprising how many people clutter up their desktops (Windows/Mac) with so much junk. I have always kept stuff organised in folders, especially work stuff and will put the folder I am currently working on as a stack and like you keep my most used applications in the dock. For everything else I use Spotlight. Although even with great features like Spotlight or applications such as Quicksilver, I still find it useful to organise stuff in folders, especially if you get obscure filenames, although searching within documents is now starting to eliminate that problem. However, search shouldn't be the answer to messiness.
