How to Install a Hard Drive in an Apple Mac Pro

You’ve already seen the unboxing of my new Big Mac. You hopefully watched how easy and beautiful it was to install more memory. Now, let’s put it to the test… and install a third hard drive into it.
The Mac Pro came with two drives. I removed the third one from my old Windows machine, to install into the Mac Pro. If you’ve ever been inside a pc case, you know how many wires are hanging around everywhere. The new Mac Pro is just gorgeous inside. There are no cables. It’s insane. You know what that means… better air flow.
As I was saying all this… you saw me quickly install the third drive. All I had to do was pop out the bracket, seat the hard drive into the bracket… and pop it in. That’s literally all I had to do. In order to use the eSata, it would be much more difficult. I would have to take several things apart in order to get to the right spot on the Motherboard. Is it really worth it? I’ve used eSata on several machines now, and never really USED it, ya know? I just don’t think it’s worth the trouble.
Oh no! There is some dust in the case! I had to put the anti-static strap back on, and get out the canned air. We can’t have the new machine be dirty already. That’s just not cool.
Getting a precision screwdriver kit is highly recommended. The one I have comes with 17 different pieces. No matter what kind of screw may be in a machine, I will have the right size screwdriver to do the job.
As I was preparing to slide the drive into the machine, a very loud scratch sounded over the stream…. along with a loud continuous popping noise. No one was sure what had happened, including me. I had kicked the keyboard on the floor accidentally. Thank you for staying with me, and not giving up. So… let’s commence shoving this thing back in place…
Wait. That’s it? I’m done? Are you sure?! I guarantee that after watching this video, you will wish you had a new Mac Pro the next time you have to open your PC case.

arrived today, and I am officially making my move away from Windows as my primary Operating System. It won’t be a perfect transition, of course. Chris that was the easiest install i have ever seen plus fast. I wish P C s where as easy. Seems that pc comp companies don’t take the time to streamline their installs and products. The way you installed the RAM , Apple has made it simple, Genius..

Does this really deserve a post? It’s that simple it’s scary, and every single PC maker should take notes.

Hi Chris. I just received my 8-core Xeon Mac Pro (2.8Ghz/ea.), with GeForce 8800GT and the stock 320gb drive. I installed 3 other drives (pulled from my PC) and I’m still smiling about how easy it was, and the sheer quality of the Mac Pro case & accessibility. From the rubber seal around the side door, and 1 lever release to the rubber rings that are on the drive sleds to stop noise & vibration (one drive I put in was a 10K WD Raptor, and I barely hear the heads).. The whole operation took nary 5 minutes. It absolutely SCREAMS uber quality. Amazing! Some folks will say “It’s better be premium, you paid a premium price!” and I will agree, but it’s nice to see technology streamlined for the average Joe, like this. ZDNet’s George Ou found out that you can’t build this kind of computer out of parts for the price you can buy it from Apple..and even if you could buy it cheaper, would you have such a flawless, idiot & wire-proof success as this new Mac Pro architecture? I can’t wait to show (brag) to my PC buddies when they come over and flip down that side door and show them how clean and beautiful this thing is… Then boot it into Windows and amaze them that it’ll run their games like Crysis flawlessly! :) By the way, my Mac just pulled nearly 13,000 mark on 3DMark06. It’s great for gaming, too!

You really think they’d put a crappy low power PSU in a system with 8 3.2ghz cores and a board that’s capable of running 32bg of ram? MacPro’s are designed for high end workstations for massive amounts of number crunching like rendering 3D images/movies and high-definition content. They’re basically super computers in a desktop. The power in them is insane and the OS it’s all running on it tuned perfectly to take advantage of a good damn amount of that raw power. Try those specs with Windows.

If you’ve seen the 2 huge 30inch monitors he uses then getting a powerful video card makes perfect sense. The native resolution on those things is massive, rendering two of those at the same time requires more video power than you’d probably think.

apple will not go out of business anytime soon. They have record sales with their ipod sales and music service. I might even buy a mac because of how much i hate microsoft. i want a new computer, but i don’t want to downgrade from xp to vista. i will give osx a look.

well i looked into buying a mac. the only one i am willing to pay for is the mini. i looked at vids on youtube of people taking apart the mini. it is basically non-serviceable. it doesn’t use standard parts, and it is not easily disassembled or upgraded. for $600 i can get a very nice PC. I will probably upgrade my mobo and video cards in my pc.

Sometimes market share has to hit the road – market share doesn’t necessarily denote a better product.
Have you seen BMW’s market share?

Kid, you talk too much… and it’s not even interesting talk. You explain stuff that a 7 year old could work out for himself. Did I REALLY just waste part of my life on your shitty video?… :-( Ok so installing a hard disk, in some way “excites” you – hmmmfff okkkkkkkk :-S. PS – no offence, but you look like one of the oddball characters from “Charlie Brown”. Shame you don’t pay as much attention to your girlfriends “details” ;-). I wish you all the best…

fox, i used to be just like you. I would post negative comments like yours. Look at apple, i am a gaming enthusiast with my own custom build computer. Macs are no slower than a PC. In fact the Mac pro will stomp on most PCs in performace. They are completely based on BSD Unix. You can run windows on them natively. They have identical hardware and architecture as a PC. Stop your uninformed whining. Get your facts first.

Unlokia,
Do you think you could do any better? I’ve learned a lot from Chris, and while I went to your site, and checked out what videos you had, NOTHING helpful. I’ll tell you what, Make some videos on what chris is doing, and then I’ll start to watch and learn from you. Until then, watch and learn, which is probably non extinct for you. Anyways, Peace! I’m done!

get barebones and buy the other stuff you need.
everything is cheaper if you buy it yourself and install it.

This shows again how poor backwards compatibility is on a Mac. On a PC you can use your old IDE drive, even if i’s just for backups, not on the Mac, it needs to be SATA.
Sometimes like that would make me smash my tools through the window.

god ur a fucking idiot, the reason they are able to make it so easy to install a hard drive unlike a PC is because it is already built, there is nothing you can do, its done already. PC’s come in many sizes so they can’t have a one solution for all approach. God why the hell do i even bother watching your movies you are such a fucking retard. You and all mac users need to fucking get real, the only reason its easy for you is because your idiots who can’t do anything yourself.

It’s not poor backwards compatibility, it’s called abandoning ancient technology, which is a good thing. Why would you want to use IDE nowadays anyway?

Not really. In fact, what you said didn’t make any sense. You’re trying too hard to bash Apple.
