How to Get Emoji Emoticons in iPhone SMS Messages Easily
Hat tip to iJustine (and Brent for letting me know):
- Buy go.tagjag.com/emoji in iTunes (.99c)
- Install and click through any story in the app.
- Go navigate through the iPhone’s Settings: General | International | Keyboards | Japanese | toggle Emoji to on
- SMS emoji graphics to anyone else who uses an iPhone – just click the globe symbol that should now appear in the SMS keyboard!
There’s also a way to do this for free (but in my estimation, it’s easier to just spend .99c on the app that’ll do it for you automatically).

Oh awesome, thank you Chris! I’ve been looking for something that does this! 99¢ is a very small price to pay, in my opinion, too add a little more flavor and personality to typically boring old SMS messages.

Funny – I see no Emoji option in iPhone settings. Nor can I get the other manual instructions to come up when in SMS or Notes.
Uptodate iPhone (2.2). Hmmm will reboot and keep playing with the options. Will be handy with most friends on iphone.

I have Emoji emoticons… But I got them for free.
This is a good thing to know. If I wasn’t poor, I would totally do this ;)
PS
I didn’t download them illegaly, I downloaded a plugin (jailbroken iTouch, doncha know?).

Figured out 1 small missed requirement. The Japanese news reader has 2 buttons a the bottom. 1 is a word caption balloon – you have to use this button and click through comments to enable Emoji emoticons.
Then go back into Settings – Intl – Keyboard – Japanese and you will now see a 3rd option for Emoji. Volia.

It’s an interesting feature, but it irritates me that it MUST be integrated as part of the contacts list for those who have not jailbroken their iPhone. I like the feature, but I am one of those people who sync their iPhone on Windows Contacts or something. I’d keep it, but if I keep it, I have to give up an organized Windows Contacts file.
However, this is pretty neat! I had fun for the moment until I realized this.

My brother-in-law sent me an SMS with the icons and I was hooked. Downloaded and 30 seconds later I was emoticoning all over the place.

Not working for me… Blank RSS page… Blank comment page… Unreadable Chinese (NOT Japanese) window pops up and closes when you push the button… $0.99 spent for nada…

No longer works under 2.2.1, as far as I can tell. Why, Apple, why?

When I click on the tagjag link, Itunes tells me it’s not available in the US Store.

To enable Emoji for FREE, you could also do this: (works 100%)
1. Download Todew Lite on the App Store
2. Create a task called “Emoji” (without quotes).
3. Follow on-screen instructions.
