How to Clean CDs

« Previous | Next »

http://live.pirillo.com/ – How many times have you gone to listen to your CD or watch a DVD and you find out that the player couldn’t read the disk? You may have a dirty disk or a scratch on it.

To clean you disk gently wipe with a clean terrycloth towel from the inside ring out – you never want to wipe in circles, as that can create bad scratches which cause the disk to become unreadable.

Another tip is to use a dab of vegetable oil, let it dry over a few minutes, and wipe the oil off (in a straight line from the inside run to the outside).

Unfortunately, if that does not work, you may have a warped disk or are suffering from bit rot, in which case the only solution is to get a new disk.

What about you? What do you do to clean your disks?

I’ve had a lot of success with scratches, by “filling” them in with one of the little yellow torpedo-shaped spectacle lens and frame “polishers”. The actual brand I use is “Clean + Brite” Eyeglass lens and frame polish (by Clear-Sight Inc., Westmont, IL 60559 U.S.A.

It says it is safe for glass and plastic lenses and it seems to work perfectly with the CDs and DVDs I’ve tried. You dab it on and polish it off with a cotton cloth (NOT paper tissues, as they will scratch the disk badly I’ve found). Rarther than “polishing out” the scratch as with the old trick of using Brasso, this seems to fill in the “micro scraches” that make the bottom of the scratch look opaque. You still see the scratch on the disk, but now it can be read by the laser…

I have found that holding the CD or DVD under warm running water and gently washing with a dab of dishwashing soap cleans up fingerprints and dirt very well. Then pat dry with a terry cloth towel.

If simple cleaning does not work, try a good auto wax or wood paste wax. (not polish) Wax will fill in tiny scratches with a permanent coating and “fix” many bad disks.

If you actually have small scratches/a layer of gunk on it my favorite thing to use is Brasso. It sounds sorta stupid but there was a review on the internet of cleaning products, and for the price-per-ml it was the best at removing small scratches.

The first post on ‘filling’ it with that stuff sounds good too.

Try a small dab of toothpaste diluted with water on a soft cloth from the centre out. It’s a very mild abrasive. wash afterwards
