How to Choose a Moving Company
I wish we had known about this site last year when we moved:
Most complaints against movers are overlooked and the consumer becomes a statistic while no action is ever taken against the moving company. When Congress dissolved the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) in 1995, they also removed the authority from the FMCSA to step in on a consumer’s behalf if they are taken advantage of by a moving company. In other words, they don’t have the authority to help you even if they want to.
If an investigation does occur, it takes months if not years for the FMCSA to, yes, get this… Fine the moving company. The scam moving companies get away with not paying the fines and if they did, the consumers don’t see a dime of their money back. The money from the moving company’s fines go to pay for highway improvements!
Who do you recommend?

I was a huge fan of Hansen Brother’s movers for a local move (Seattle to Bellevue) last year, and was really pleased with a Graebel move from Texas to Seattle 3 years ago.
Movers are like phone companies, though – everyone has a horror story about one or the other of them.

I used A Smart Move for my move from Cleveland to Seattle. I chose them because of the free storage for 28 days since I had not yet found a place to live. When I finally found a place, I called to have my vault dropped off. The woman told me that they wouldn’t be able to get my things to me until the following Monday (it was Tuesday). I was upset but there wasn’t anything I could do about it.
A couple hours later I received a call from a man claiming to be the president of Smart Move, Chris Sapyta. He told me there was an accident. I thought I was being punked. He went on to tell me that the TRAIN that my vault was on blew off the train tracks in Montana. The Vault was never supposed to be on a train. One major note: this was Aug. 28th; Smart Move was told that my vault was lost on Aug. 11th!
Why would they wait over two weeks to notify me that they lost EVERYTHING I OWNED? Did they think I wasn’t going to ask for my vault?
Smart Move is a terrible company; I highly recommend finding a more reputable mover. I was “given” 60ยข per lb for all of my belongings witch amounted to $999.00 total.
