There's a good question, why would anyone want to build a custom distro?

Since Linux is open source the answer is why not!

The same reason why people build web servers or software programs, that is if you remove the motivation from the competitive circles. Building a distro doesn't have to be a competitive thing, as in rolling out thousands of useless clones.

It could simply mean you want to build something designed for your personal needs and that is where effective is the punchline, as not all distros are designed for peoples personal needs and if you look at history Linux evolved out of hackers and not distributions.

what a fun project! building your own Linux distro as if the major distros such as Ubuntu don't have thousands of man hours from skilled people put into them.. why fix something thats not broken? You can just take Ubuntu and modify it if you need to but building your own distro is a bit extreme unless you have a very good reason to do it or if you're trying to start an open source community project.

You're not making your own distro in this case. This is what's called a "spin" in the Fedora world and a "remix" in Ubuntu land. I'm sure the Novell followers call it something else.

Making your own distro for real involves a lot of work, including obtaining hosting for the packages you include and install discs, how you install to a user's disk, etc.

I'd be eternally grateful if someone here could drop a shout to my Geeks comments and clue me in:

Using Suse Studio to try a build and cannot get past this. Just says there's a clock/lang conflict- but I only have Gnome stable chosen- I've removed nearly every package I've thought of to fix this but no go? Is it possible for the Gnome stable to have a conflict with itself?

Cheers-
