How Long Have You Been Reading Comics or Graphic Novels?

Some of my fondest memories as a child happened to be reading comic books at my grandparents’ house. I’ve graduated to reading graphic novels. Ok, ok… I still enjoy comics, as well. They’re just very visual. I would much rather read a book that has pictures or illustrations than without! I received an email from Ed recently, asking me to check out his website. He is a graphic artist, and creates comics!

Ed is a hardworking illustrator based out of Pittsburgh Pa. He’s happy he gained some traction developing a cartooning career quickly after his tenure at The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic art. His best known work right now is his collaborations with Harvey Pekar on American Splendor. He and Mr. Pekar are currently wrapping up a graphic novel called “MACEDONIA” for Random House.

The comic itself has cool little labels on it. I am definitely looking forward to reading both Wizzywig Vol 1: PHREAK, and Vol 2: Hacker. These are seriously geeky! I love supporting independent artists in their ventures, and these are something I can totally get behind! They’re well done, and look to be fantastic!

If you’re looking to add to or start your own comic collection, be sure to check out all of Ed’s work!

You should try out PVPonline.com and pennyarcade.com. Both are excellent webcomics that have tech/gamers bent.

Been reading comics for 35 years (since I was 4), except for a couple of years after high school when I thought I’d “moved on”. Batman: A Death in the Family soon taught me otherwise!

My tastes are pretty mainstream – superheroes and licensed properties like Star Wars – but I can still appreciate the indie creators.

The digital age has thrown up a heap of challenges for comics, but also opportunities. For instance, it’s cool that I can now read CBRs of all my old favorites (and some news ones) on my iPhone!

Comic books are the best, if his books are available through Diamond, can you have him publish the part number and I will get a couple in my store. – Andy

Comics have always been a part of my life to one degree or another. I was first introduced to them by my parents when I was around 5 or 6 years old. Comics are one of the main reasons I learned to read even before starting school. During those early days I read whatever I was given but the one character I learned to love, more than any other, was Superman.

Before you ask, yes, I was one of those kids running around with a towel (well, actually a baby blanket) tied around my neck. I even drew the red “S” shield on the blanket with crayons. It was great fun even though, no matter how many times I jumped off the shed, I wasn’t able to fly. Heck, I still dream about flying.

My reading gradually tapered off until by junior high school I wasn’t reading at all. I can’t really say why I stopped reading, I just did. That trend mostly continued through high school although I would occassionally pick up a copy of Action Comics or Superman.

Then came the day when I heard that DC Comics was planning to kill Superman. That got me back into reading big time. Not just Superman but several other titles as well. I was camped out at the comic shop every week when the new books would come in and would easily go home with 30 or more comics. I was addicted.

From that point I read religiously. My favorite artist quickly became Alex Ross. His work, his paintings, are simply amazing. They convey a sense of reality and emotion that, in my opinion, has never been equaled. His artwork would fit in seemlessly in any museum. If you don’t believe me Google his name and judge for yourself.

Anyway, like I said, I was a voracious reader. That is up until a few years ago when I started having health problems related to my diabetes. The last few years have been rough. Eventually, I lost my left leg below the knee. But I fought back and can now walk again with the aid of a remarkable doctor and the prosthesis he made for me. I can even ride a bicycle which is one of my other loves in life.

This blog, and my answer, has got me thinking. Maybe I’ll just stop by the comic shop later this week and see what’s going on. Yes, I think I will.

I remember my father having these Sandman comics around the house.
The Sandman series by Niel Gaiman were the first graphic novels I read. Deep, driving stories with philosophy and fantasy. It blew me away. I didn’t read the original comics, I read the collections that are sold in books; Each containing 8-10 comics (however long a given story arc was). That was about 5 years ago. I’ve re-read a few of them since and they’re wonderful.

haha this is funny i always alway like comic but never read them

but dc comic are still the best
