How Do You Use Twitter?

Ponzi loves Twitter, and has her own method of finding new people to follow. She will click on someone’s profile within conversations that others are having. She then peruses the new person’s timeline. If they are discussing things interesting to her, she’ll start following them.
For instance… she is following Scott Maxwell. He is a Mars Rover Driver who recently spoke at Gnomedex. While on Scott’s timeline, she noticed a few others who were discussing “Cool Mars things” with Scott, so she clicked on their link. Low and behold, she liked the conversations she saw going on in their timeline, so she started following them, as well.
Ponzi feels that this is one of the coolest things about Twitter. It lets her meet new people that she may already have things in common with, and keep discussions going on subjects she’s interested in.

I use it in a similar manner, and like to think that I can build my own little “social network on the fly”. So as an example, I work with Web 2.0 & social media start-ups. To locate my Tweeple, I searched using terms relevant to that industry. For this I used Twellow.com and Summize.com (now part of Twitter). I also used Twitterpacks…and wella I built my own little SN in 10 minutes.
Now, as to the WHY people use Twitter, you really need read my blog post…it’s all about the TweEgo); http://bit.ly/2IxQUG

I use it to follow interesting news items I might never have been aware of otherwise. It’s nice to have people share the links of the news stories they are following. I’ve been made of aware of some nice tidbits over the course of time I’ve used Twitter.

I use it for keeping wife, family, friends and facebook up to date. I also use it for following cool technologists and things they are seeing and talking about. I’m just a techno-freak. :-)

Do the exact same thing. Cool! It’s the most effective way to follow ‘your’ type of Twitter(er).

Just started using Twitter so still finding my sea legs, so to speak. Didn’t think of using Twitter in the way Ponzi is using but going to start. :)
Would be nice if Twitter has a way to categorized people. I can have a category of people for my home based business, a category about Mars, and other stuff that I’m following. And I can filter comments if I want.

I’ve found the best way to learn more about my Twitter-mates friends is to use FriendFeed. It’s much easier to surf around their friends and follow their conversations especially if they come up with something interesting.
I used to follow timelines of people I was following, just to see who had the juicy bits, but now that I’m following around 250 people I’m getting more than my share of conversations to follow.

Well, there’s how I use it, and then there’s how I’d like to use it.
How I’d like to use it is as a tool to keep in touch w/ my friends and family. However, my friends and family are all losers who don’t even know what Twitter is, and trying to convince them of what and how great it is just seems to go past them like a fart in the wind.
Therefore, how I use it is to keep up w/ the Geekverse that arose out of TechTV, and to make me feel like I actually know you people.

I wrote a mIRC script to update my twitter from within IRC, so I seldom actually log on to the website.
That said, I’ve found and re-found some friends on there in teh past just by wandering from profile to profile in the manner Ponzi does.
Twitter’s great, it’s simple to use and that’s a winner, especially as it’s “What are you doing?” and not “What are you thinking?”!

I’m a big fan of Twitter, and have been using it heavily since the outset. For those of you not yet using it, Twitter is a communications gateway that asks the question: “What are you doing now?” Users can answer and hear their friends’ answers via SMS, via IM, or on a webpage. Updates have to be under 140 characters. Think somewhere between IRC and IM and that’s Twitter.
Twitter is a constant pulse product, meaning it can really sap your attention span. That seems antithetical to life-hacking, or at least to Getting Things Done. So how is it useful? Here are my tricks.
Use Twitter for Good
* Quick Human Answers- Ask folks on your friend’s list which digital camera to buy for under $300 US, and you’ll get back a stream of responses.
* Conference / News Briefings- The last several major tech events were covered by Twitter. I heard about the Apple iPhone faster through Twitter than I would via blog surfing. Similarly, I’ve watched people in San Francisco report earthquakes that took news sources hours to confirm.
* Friendsourcing- Last Tuesday, I asked about a web designer for a project. I got back 14 emails in 10 minutes from different sources on Twitter. It’s a great place to find folks to help with things. We once helped a friend out of a bind when he got stuck at an airport, strictly by Twitter. (I write about friendsourcing on my blog).
* Micro-Attention-Sharing- Lots of us use Twitter to direct folks to blog posts we’ve written, news we find needs sharing, or entertaining things we’ve found on the web (Twitter has a built in function to use tinyurl.com to shrink URLs to keep it under 140 characters). It’s *like* using del.icio.us to share, but it’s instant, and you wouldn’t drop 100 links on someone in Twitter in a given day.
* Direct People to Good Causes- I’ve seen plenty of posts of someone doing a walk for hunger or a collection for diabetes. Twitter allows people to use their friend lists to propagate that information faster, and try to draw more direct help down to a problem.
* Bonus- As advertised, Twitter answers the question “What are you doing?” It means that you can stay in touch with others without being intrusive. Just follow their twitters.

I have recently been useing Twitter everyday now to connect and follow other people of the same interests as me. I Never really knew how unique Twitter was untill I actually started following friends and having them follow me.
My experience with Twitter is by far very enjoyable and will continue to use it on a regular basis.

I basically just use Twitter to update people on what I’m doing. People just randomly add me to their watch list and I don’t really care! If I know them then I’ll do the same back to them! It’s elementary, my dear Watson!

I used Twitter for instant feedback of developments on my website, though the service went down too often. I will try it again soon as perhaps the service has been better lately.

I love Twitter. It’s an easy way to keep in touch with my friends and know what they are doing everytime they update. It’s pretty interesting actually and I have been able to keep up with politics, news and entertainment as well.
Go Twitter!

Twitter is a great service if you want to get in touch with people that shares the same interests with you.
eg. I would never have read Scobleizer´s had it not been for twitter.
And I am sure that Chris has received many new members thanks to twitter.
And I would never follow that many people had it not been for twitter´s cool way to get in touch with other people.

I’ve been using Twitter for a while… I’m usually picky about who I follow, but anyone can pretty much follow me without a problem. I mainly use it as a universal status update for my blog and Facebook. Ya know, just to keep the friends and family updated ;-) But I love it!

I know I don’t use Twitter as well as I should… I post stuff occasionally… look at the people I follow occasionally when I have time to kill. I’m sure there is more that I can do with it.
