How Do You Save Money?

Recently, I did a video with tips on saving money for gadgets… especially when you’re a teenager who can’t get a ‘regular’ job. This time, I’m going to give you some tips sent in by a community member for saving money in general.

  • First, and most important, put your money in that bank. Lets say its Christmas, and you receive $400.00 from your family. The next day, you have all that money in your wallet and go to Wal-Mart… only to see a really nice Xbox 360 on sale for $450.00. You buy it, and hardly play it. You’re out the Christmas money, and you are also negative another $50.00. Putting your money in the bank is one of the most important things to do when it comes to trying to save. Making an account where you are only allowed to take out $25.00 at a time will sound like a bad idea, but really be positive one in the long run. This is also a good idea because not a lot of stores will take Debit cards or will have a Debit machine.
  • Buying clothes is something that everyone has to do at some point in the year. But do you really need that $70.00 American Eagle shirt and those $100.00 pants? The answer is no. When buying clothes, especially when you are growing, it is best to go to a say, Wal-Mart. The American Eagle logo is on the belt area of their pants where no one can even see it. I have seen pants at Wal-Mart that look very similar and feel the same for $19.00.
  • Do you need whatever it is you’re buying? Sometimes you may be at an electronics store, and might have just received some money from work in cash. You see something that you “think” you want. When you buy it, you love it for the first month or two… but what happens to it after that? It’s going to be sitting on the shelf or in a drawer collecting dust, and if it’s anything but a Mac it’s not going to have a high resale value on eBay. Ways to prevent yourself from the temptation of buying it is to leave the money in the car or at home. Bring only as much as you would like to spend. If you know that you are going to be tempted to buy an electronic device then stay out of that store or aisle.
  • Buying food is another necessity of life. If you are like me, then you love food. Food can be costly when you have to buy everything once or twice a week. Ways to save money when you are buying food are easy. Look for coupons for like .50$ off of an item, or buy one get one free. Another thing that is really good to do is to buy in bulk. This is something that I will do often when I got to Costco. Buy your food from no-frills or other non-profit food-markets. You will still get your FrootLoops, but for almost 2$ cheaper.
  • Wait until Boxing Day. Waiting until after Christmas is one of the best things you can do. Boxing day is a really busy day, but you will save lots of Green. When I was looking for a Computer to buy, I noticed this HP computer for about 900$. I looked at the boxing day sale from BestBuy, and noticed that the price on the computer lowered by around $200, and came with a free printer. Waiting is the key to getting what you want. Also, wait for new things to come out like Chris did with his Mac Pro (Big Mac). Chris did the smart thing an waited. He could of gotten the older model for around the same price, but instead got a better one for the same amount.

Lots of good tips, as for a bank account, I’ve found tossing money in my Orange Savings from ING Direct the way to go, I love the interest rates over there. Also you can set it up to have money automatically drooped into the account every so often!

Oh yea, Frogger =)

One thing I would like to ad to the Wait tip. If you are looking for a item that is sold all the time on ebay then you should watch the items

WATCH THEM dont bid on the first thing you see on ebay. Sooner or later you will come acrooss that item or one just like it that will sell cheaper than the first one you were going to bid on.

This is how I got my 250 dollar cell phone for 40 dollars. And on ebay the normal going rate was 100-150 dollars

Omega 3 milk is disgusting. It has fish oil. I get my omega 3 straight from fish: it tastes way better that way.

He had some great tips on saving money , and your response were great. The problem we have here in the U.S. is that we have used our credit until we owe big time.
As far as clothing I like to go to places like the Discovery Store, which is run by the American Heart Association. Also food,I like very fresh produce to many times I’ll go to the Farmers Market or to farms that I can Pick my own produce.Great post.

those are really good tips for a person like me that like to waste lot of money. i really got to save some money because i need a new computer and maybe with those tips i can save to buy it.

lots of good tips one your forgot is have a safe, make a rule that you will keep money in the safe and only take as much as you need when you go shopping, never take more or else you will be tempted to buy that new overpriced game. also cut fast food down, it adds up my parents maybe spend 100-200 dollars a month on fast food thats 1-2 months worth of grocery’s for a family of 4 (more like 8 once you see how much we eat.)

hehe im crazy woooooooooo *flash

To save my money i buy all of my clothes in Ross (dress for less). as randy_nacol2022, i buy my food in Farmers Market. also i advice to look at your bank, change to free checking. Start a saving account, every time you have some money left over put it in, if not eventually you will spend it.

This is my opinion, it works.

im going to have to use some of those tips
(frogger)

yeah chris got me a rosetta stone for cheap

You’re so cute!

Frogger!

Oh, I couldn’t stop laughing on your other video when you were laughing like crazy!

I disagree with buying clothes from Walmart and food from Costco. Those kinds of stores are unethical and problematic in so many ways. You can get better quality at the same prices at stores like TJ Maxx/Marshalls, etc. Food is better purchased from Farmers Markets, coops, etc. Learn to cook and eat healthy as well as thrifty; it will help so much in so many ways!

read the tightwads gazet

one thing from there think how much are you paying to store something. if you have a storage room (basement/attic/closets) How much dose that space add to you rent mortgage or taxes.
and frogger

hey man what kind of camcorder do you use your videos looks with poor cualitie

frogger, and thanks!
im a highschool student and i hate packed lunches… but i also hate spending $6 a day at some restaurant, so i actually take a small snack to school, take absolutely no money, and then just eat lunch when school ends at my house 2:30. After one week ive saved nearly $100 and im still not gonna spend it! =].

I save money by using one credit card for purchase of real needs, such as food , gasoline, dental care, optical care, etc. I pay the balance due to a zero balance every month to avoid interest charges. my card can return anywhere from 1% to 5% rebate depending upon the type of need and the type of retailer. When $50.00 or more rebate is accrued, I phone or e-mail and promptly get a check from the card issuer. By shopping around, you can find the card that will maximize the rebate.
