How do You Restore a Bricked (non-Jailbroken) iPhone?

Over the past few days, I came under a light attack. I was frozen out of my iTunes account after someone gained access to it. You all know I’m not an Apple basher. I love my iPhone. When anything works well, I will say so. When something doesn’t work, I will say that as well. I don’t care what company it is. So tonight, it’s Apple’s turn.
Earlier, I was syncing my iPhone to update some apps, when the syncing just stopped. I didn’t think much of it at first. I thought the iPhone had just reset itself. However, an hour later… the logo was still in the middle of the screen. I tried a hard reset, which of course didn’t work. Some friends recommended that I follow a few steps, and so far that has seemed to work. So how did I reset it?
- Plug the iPhone into your computer.
- Hold onto both the Home button, and the power button… and keep holding on. After it reboots, keep holding on and let it reboot again. Still do not let go.
- The next thing you will see is the restore screen. You’ll see the iTunes logo, and a little cable. At that point, you’ll be restoring a backup.
- Restore the last full backup that you have.
I’m looking forward to being able to use my phone again. Unfortunately, I have to reset a couple of passwords, and reinstall some apps. So yeah. The iPhone isn’t perfect. Yes, it’s great. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t chinks in the armor. I’ve never liked iTunes, for instance.
In this instance, I was lucky. The phone works again. What experiences have you had with your tech gadgets crashing. Were you able to restore and still use them? How difficult was it to do, in comparison to this?

What 2.0 alleges that it brings to the table is support for third-party Apps. However, and I’ve experienced this three times already, it just isn’t happening. I’m not talking about a small little reboot. I’m talking I have to completelywipe it out and restore everything from scratch. It’s getting very annoying, to say the least. I have to re-add the Web icons (which aren’t saved), adding account usernames and passwords, etc. Inevitably, something still keeps going wrong. Just when I think it

The answer to your post’s title question is: You don’t.
A “bricked” phone is one that is IRREPARABLE. If it can be fixed, it is not “bricked”, it is merely , “frozen”, “inoperable”, or “broken”.
How to fix frozen: Hard reset
How to fix inoperable: Do a system restore.
How to fix broken: System Restore or Take to Genius Bar.
How to fix bricked: You can’t. That’s what makes it “bricked”.

I had a similar crash/freeze problem with my 80gb ipod..
Tried for a week to restore, charge it fully, drain it fully and and restore. Mashing buttons made it start once but soon just died again. Ended up taking it to the dealer and of course, my warranty had run out 1 week prior (had i have taken it in when it first happened, i’d have been completely covered)
In the end they replaced it due to the 5 year extended warranty i bought from the retailer. Had there have been a different brand with an 80gb model at the time I’d have begged for a refund to get that one.
I share the same opinion of itunes, it will forever elude me the allegiance some people have to that brand..

If you have a iPhone that doesn’t work, and you can’t get it working, then you are pretty much out of luck saving it, you have to restore it in DFU mode, which formats everything.

Chris, I already tahnked you for this info, regrettable I had to use it this morning – in panic mode. I do in home computer repairs and was due to leave for first housecall in a little over an hor when I plugged the phone in to charge it. I saw that there was a new update and thought that I shouldn’t do this right now and then on a whim decided to do it anyway, what the heck, I had an hour! Well it failed and and the phone ended up in a constant reboot mode and was useless. You don’t realize how much you rely on this phone until you really need it!
I tried the rstore and it failed!!!
Now it is really Panic time, update failed and restore would not work, phone in constant reboot mode, and I have to leave in less than an hour for my first house call! Remembered that the new software download was over 200 meg in size, but I couldn’t see it in iTunes. I did a search of the hard drive and found the file in my profile under App Data\roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes. There were 4 of them there so I took the newest and moved it someplace else and hooked the phone back up to the computer – restore worked!!!
This answers my question of how to restore your computer to an earlier version of iTunes, I just wish I didn’t have to figure it out in panic mode!
I hope you and your readers find this info useful.

Hey Gerald,
Any non functional iphone is a brick. Some are permanently bricked, many are temporarily bricked.
Just because your head is a brick doesn’t make you a brick expert!

Charles Strickland – Thank you for your 2008 post!
I was experiencing the the horrors of the “wheel of death”.
1. The phone was stuck in the reboot cycle.
2. iTunes would not properly recognize the phone when it was successfully put into DFU mode using PWNAGE.
3. The phone would not charge.
I was searching and searching for any answer to this problem (simple, complex… Anything!)
Your was simple, just involving a little more patience with the hard reboot steps…
It may seem like a small thing, but as you said when you are panicking because you’ve lost all your data and contacts, it is an enormous relief to regain access to it all again.
Regards,
Leo
