How do you Keep your Laptop Cool?

If things look different in this video compared to others I’ve done, it’s because I have a new laptop stand. I’m not sure if I’ll use it as my primary stand, though. They’re usually designed to help make your notebook more ergonomic and comfortable for people, and helps keep it properly cooled. No matter what kind of notebook you have, they tend to overheat without proper airflow. Getting some type of laptop stand is a good thing for this reason. The one I normally use is a Targus. It has a couple of fans, and a couple of USB ports. The Alto from Logitech is the one I want to talk about today. First, let’s look at the features:
- Notebook display riser: Elevates and extends your notebook’s display for viewing comfort. Relaxes you while making you more productive.
- Full-sized keyboard: Type faster, with less fatigue. The integrated soft palm rest adds wrist support and keeps your hands away from the hot notebook surface.
- One-touch hot keys: Get instant access to your digital music with media and volume controls. Additional hot keys instantly take you to your favorite applications, folders, and Web pages.
- Multipurpose USB hub: Use three high-speed USB 2.0 ports to connect your favorite peripherals, including cordless mice, webcams, printers, and external drives.
- Works with virtually any notebook: Use it with your current notebook—and your next one.
- Easy setup and storage: Flip it open for instant use on almost any flat surface; fold it down for easy transport and storage.
I think this is a nice laptop stand, but it is really pricey. It looks good, and is really functional. It will make good office decor, for sure. I don’t know. Maybe I’ll grow to like it more over time. It makes my MacBook sit up entirely too high for my needs.

I use a simple Targus notebook cooler with 4 USB ports. They come in very handy and keep the notebook cool! It’s great! I love it!

I never have any problems with temperature on my macbook. I just have a little plastic stand I made out of scrap plastic that gets it off the table. The fans in the computer are good enough and it keeps it cool!

I want the one Chris usually uses (the Targus one). I really don’t like the Logitech stand. Especially the fact that you have to use a power adapter for USB… WOW! My laptop usually gets really hot and am looking forward to getting one soon!

Though I don’t own a laptop but my bro does, I understand how important it is to keep your laptop cool. Even desktops you may have to worry. Laptops are very important to keep cool. My bros fan went out and he has to limit his usage. He will be getting a new computer this year because this one is like 5 years old. The point is, if you don’t keep your computer cool, it will performe badly

I do it the cheap way I have a fan sucking the away from where the fans on the laptop are, and try not to keep it against a wall where it can heat up, but these sound cool, I may have to go pick one up and test it out! It’s interesting that it says you can type faster!!!

I use the targus laptop cooler. I love it! It really does the job. It was not a lot of money. Here is the best part. To turn it on you use a usb cable! no extra power cables. I use mine all time and I mostly use it on one spot and one spot only. That is… where it is most hot duh! I think Chris has this also well I love it and I am sure Chris does as well. This cooler improved my computer so much…well a little but it is something! Great video Chris.

I find that most laptop coolers out there don’t really cool the laptops unless it is in an air-conditioned environment. It takes in cold air from the surrounding area and blows it underneath. However, for a room that does not use air-conditioning, the air you blow from your mouth is stronger than that of the laptop cooler, REALLY. I wish there are coolers as powerful as those of a desktop computer. Coolermaster has good ones for desktop, the Coolermaster V1 that i’m using isn’t satisfying at all :(

I have a pretty old dell computer, and it gets hot and quick! I do it the old fashon way (if you’d call it that) I have a small fan behind my laptop usually and try to keep my laptop away from walls and confined spaces, and when its on my lap with no fan it gets hot!! I’ll have to go out and get one of these to try out they look pretty interesting, and i think it’s cool that it has pads on it for your wrists to rest on and so you can type faster (they claim).

I recommend aluminum laptop fans because they dissipate heat better than plastic ones.

I agree, Requiring AC sucks but not having AC option may suck too.. Should be optional. If I happen to need to plug in something needing a hi powered USB port I certainly would like to have the AC Adaptor.

The one way I keep my laptop cool is by setting my power plan to balanced in Windows Vista. It also helps that I have my laptop elevated off the table to allow cooler air to be circulated through the laptop.

I’ve experimented with laptop coolers on my MBP. Using iStat Pro, i’ve noticed slight drop in temperatures. It is most effective on cooling the enclosure base than anything else. Still better than nothing

I’ve been looking at the targus for a while, but I’m not a huge laptop user, and my Dell doesn’t overheat THAT much. Although I would like to say that my mother bought a laptop stand in England about 6 years ago, that had very nice airflow.

I really like the Targus cooler, but I’m not a huge laptop user. My mother bought an angled stand about 4 years ago, that had excellent laptop airflow circulation.

I looked into the pads with fans and they typically are powered via your USB ports. Looking at opinions of users, some complained that the pads burned up their USB ports. So, I was looking for a passive cooling pad and ran across a great new product from iXoft that uses some kind of space age material that wicks the heat away. It is called a Thermaltake pad.
I picked up 2 of them from circuitcity.com and both my laptops do run cooler as the fans now run at slower speeds or kick off and on regularly instead of blasting away at full tilt. These pads also work well if you want to sit the laptop on your lap and don’t want it to burn your lap.
They come in several colors and are easy to throw into your laptop bag to take on the road. No power to worry about, either. When they are cold, they are kind of stiff, but still flexible. When your laptop is sitting on the pad and the pad is sucking away the heat, the hot spots from your laptop turn the material inside the pad soft as it sucks away the heat. So, the pad gets softer and more flexible the more it is used.
However it works, it does the job for me.

I also use a Targus with USB ports, although the ports are in the back and don’t get used very often. I bought mine on eBay for a reasonable price; it always seems to keep my Alienware Area 51 m5750 cool and the fan noise isn’t too bad. I’ve seen what happens when a notebook/laptop overheats, and it was not a fun experience. Best wishes from Iowa, Kevin

I have a Targus that I got with my Asus notebook. Works fine and the fan is quiet. The problem was I had trouble using the small keyboard and the built-in Touchpad for the type of work I do.
To solve the Touchpad issue I carry a Logitech TrackMan Wheel (Thumb ball). Then I tried the Alto to get a full size keyboard. I really like it and along with a 22″ wide screen monitor it is like having a docking station for use at home.
Still use the Targus when on the road because it fits in my notebook backpack while the Alto does not.

My acer laptop gets hot very quickly. I use it mostly for the MS Streets and Trips program while I’m driving every day and I have to put a 12V auto fan blowing on the computer at all times or it will overheat. God forbid I get a really hot day or drive the convertible! The sun beating down would probably fry it.

Why not just turn your fan up??
Thats what I do on my Macbook Pro.
Cools it down far more than any laptop cooler – less hassle to.
