When was the last time you gave your time to your community – volunteering for something? The last time I did something was at ComcastCares Day. It was a tent set up by Comcast, staffed by local social media folks. We were spreading the message of the power of social media specifically to non-profit organizations. We taught them how to use outlets such as Twitter and Facebook to get their message across.

Maybe you want to volunteer your time and resources in your community – but you just don’t know where to start. Maybe you want to host your own Volun-Tweetup. Or maybe you want to do something a bit different. You can now check out All for Good. This site will help you connect with local volunteer opportunities. It’s non-partisan, nothing political is involved. It doesn’t matter what party you may belong to – what matters is that you want to help others.

All for Good is a simple-to-use web application that helps you find volunteer opportunities in your local community. You can get started by entering search terms (e.g. “seniors” or “education”) at the top of the All for Good home page. Once you enter these initial keywords you’ll be taken to a page of relevant results based on your keyword(s) and location.

Tap into your passions when looking for something to volunteer your time with. Your community needs you. If you’re doing nothing this weekend… why not look for a way you can help? You’ll not only be helping others, you’ll feel good about yourself… and maybe meet some new friends.

All for Good has a video of Michelle Obama entitled “A special message from the First Lady.

This makes it appear that Michelle Obama is endorsing All For Good.

However, the video, redirected from YouTube, is of Michelle Obama endorsing “United We Serve” and SERVE.GOV

Warranted or not, this raises a red flag for me…

The site discovered what it thinks is my approximate geographic location using my IP address.

Red Flag #2.

The ABOUT and CONTACT functions of the web site does not disclose names, addresses, or phone numbers…

Privacy: “Due to the nature of some of these activities, we may collect personally identifiable information that you submit such as your login credentials, name, email address, zip code, organization name and organization website. We may also collect additional personally identifiable information that you voluntarily transmit with your communications to us.”

“We may use your personally identifiable information to deliver requested information or contact you to fulfill your requests, verify your authority to enter our Site and to improve the content and general administration of the Site. We may use the aggregate information that we collect to analyze trends, administer the Site, track users’ movement, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use.”

“The Site may provide links to other Web sites or resources over which Our Good Works does not have control (”External Web Sites”). Such links do not constitute an endorsement by Our Good Works of those External Web Sites. You acknowledge that Our Good Works is providing these links to you only as a convenience, and further agree that Our Good Works is not responsible for the content of such External Web Sites.”

I consider those statements to be predatory or irresponsible.

Red Flag #3

That’s enough to keep me from clicking further.

Bitbyter: Fo you mind telling us what it is you’re so paranoid about? Do you think someone is going to pick your pockets while you’re out painting a fence at the school?

I’m not a big fan of All For Good because its functionality leaves something to be desired, but really All For Good is just an aggregator of links provided by a bunch of other Web services and national nonprofits, including VolunteerMatch and others.

To express “red flags” because of standard privacy language and support for the First Lady’s call to serve is ridiculous. There’s a lot to be afraid of in the world these days: toxic water, military coups, terrorist activity, etc. Can we keep focused on what really matters?

You don’t. They come to you. I constantly get all this whining about not having money to procure this and that. I can get this and that for practically any non profit, for nothing. So their problem being nothing? Kind of sort of, they being out of the loop is their problem. They want control out of a transaction that has no money involved. Hmmm. Hello.
