E-Mail:

He’s paying me to move to the Mac?!

Daniel Miessler has thrown down the gauntlet:

There’s not much suspense here, as I’m sure you know what I’m going to say, but I’ll say it anyway. Dude, enough already. Spend 60 days in OS X and see if you want to go back to XP/Vista. If you do, I’ll pay you $250 cash, plus I’m donating $100 to get you your first Mac. I’m not even playing, Chris. Windows is beneath you, man. If you don’t go OS X then do Ubuntu. Just do SOMETHING. Stop messing with Windows 95 Version 4; it’s a waste of your time.

Dunno. It’d take substantially more than that to invest in comparable infrastructure. I couldn’t go from using a powerful Quad FX workstation to anything less than a Mac Pro. These aren’t inexpensive decisions to make, Daniel - though I appreciate the sentiment. Even so, do you realize that my life still revolves tightly around Outlook?

“do you realize that my life still revolves tightly around Outlook?”

Dude, Parallels in Coherence mode. Run Outlook right alongside your other apps, Mac or Windows.

That’s how I’m running my new Mac Book Pro at work (Microsoft world all the way - everything is Exchange, NetMeeting, and IE). And it’s completely, totally awesome. :-)

[...] It looks like all of Chris Pirillo’s complaining has netted him an interesting challenge - or is it a bribe? [...]

Glad I watched this video. I’ve been wondering about vista. Thanks.

I’m with you, Chris. Sure, MacOS has some bells and whistles. But my life is built around Outlook and other Windows-only products. And really, I don’t have problems using Windows. Th eprospect of buying all new hardware and software is, well crazy. Besides, you like to tinker. Try that on a Mac.

Unlike you, I already decided to wait before upgrading to Vista. History has proven that jumping to a new OS right off the bat causes headaches. Besides Mac has their own track record of OS upgrade issues (and that weird failing hard drive thing). So let’s not act like these are Windows-centric problems.

XP works great and Vista will have the kinks worked out by the end of the year.

I’d chip in a buck or five, towards Chris trying OSX or better yet taking the full FOSS plunge and try Ubuntu, OpenOffice.org, Gimp, etc.

Somebody needs to setup one of those ClickGrids [clickgrid.com/] for the project.

Mr. Miessler has a point (If you don’t go OS X then do Ubuntu.). Just as an FYI, Ubuntu is not the expensive proposition the MAC might be, and it is very stable. Ubuntu comes with the Gnome desktop. Now what could be more natural than the LockerGnome using the Gnome Desktop? In addition, Ubuntu has an outstanding user community who are eager to help those new to Linux. Another variation of Ubuntu is Kubuntu (Ubuntu with the KDE desktop - but not as natural sounding as the Gnome Desktop).

In the interest of full exposure, I am not a user of either Ubuntu or Kubuntu, but I do use Mandriva Linux in a dual boot with WinXP. Mandriva is my production OS and WinXP is here only because I provide tech support for Windows users.

I experimented with Kubuntu for a time (making my box a triple boot), and I liked it a lot, but not enough to replace my Mandriva. I am familiar with the Mandriva way of doing things and I like the system management / configuration tools they provide better than what I find on other distributions I have tested.

The main thing I like about Linux (other than its stability and security) is its configure-ability. I get to decide what I want in my computer and how I want it to look and even behave. Computer sellers co-brand Windows computers by putting their logo in the BIOS screen and perhaps in the Control panel (at least they did in Win98). With Linux, my logo comes up in the boot menu, and remains there - all the way to my desktop background. My sound system informs me when another user logs in, and of the time each quarter hour (that’s my own bash script). My system remains running pretty much 24-7 and provides print support for my home network.

When I first started using Linux, it felt confusing - too many choices. How was any one ever to learn this OS? Now when I use WinXP, it feels constricted, limited - how does any one get anything done in this OS any way?

I know you can not make Linux your production OS today, but give it a try. Spend some quality time working in it. When you get to feeling a little limited when you work in Windows, make the move. If that never happens, at least you gave it a shot.

It’s time to sit down and write out the programs that are only available on Windows that you really can’t give up. And then to investigate things like Wine, Parallels and VMware to see if you can run them under something else.

Here’s my list
- Winamp
- Skype
- A thousand or so small utilities, some of which haven’t been written yet that are Windows first, Mac maybe and Linux never.

And Outlook? Really, you’ve got to wean yourself off that stuff. It’s bad for your health.

Isn’t it odd that you have arrived at the point where you make a video to describe a lingering topic you discussed nearly a week ago?

And such a topic based around your personal oppinion that people have such a problem with.

With what you do, XP is better for you at this point in Vista’s current stance and people have a problem with that…. WHYYYYY?

Seriously, Chris knows what he is talking about and it’s a personal choice. Why would people care so much about what OS you use??

Another thing. It’s not like your vocalness about your choice to abandon Vista, atleast halfly, will cause a downfall or hault in Vista sales. It’s the fact that Vista doesn’t work the way it should and the community should rely on someone such as yourself to give their professional feedback on the matter.

Chris, I have a question. To kind of reinstate a temporary Call For Help type situation, how would I go about getting meta tags on my WordPress site, ChrisClemons.com? I installed a plugin, autometa, but am currently unsure of how to exactly use it. I basically want the content of my posts to be searchable on google.

Is this possible? Any plugins you would reccomend instead of autometa? Any alternatives?

Thanks,
Chris

Good video ! In my opinion everything what you say about Windows Vista is true. I’m experience the same as you about drivers etc etc. This is why I also upgrading back to XP because Vista sucks at this time. Hope it will be better when SP1 released.

Chris, you can’t give up on Windows. If you do, Windows will have no chance…

Fron this article at informationweek: http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=197700789

“Citing concerns over cost and compatibility, the top technology official at the federal Department of Transportation has placed a moratorium on all in-house computer upgrades to Microsoft’s new Windows Vista operating system, as well as Internet Explorer 7 and Office 2007, according to a memo obtained Friday by InformationWeek.”

Looks like you’re not alone in your concerns about Vista not being fully baked ;-)

Julian writes about applications only on Windows and includes just 2 names, one of which is Skype.

Skype has been available on the Mac for a long time, and is up past version 2 now, and includes video.

Chris! An “inability” to access Outlook on a Mac is a poor excuse! Either upgrade to a Mac or upgrade your excuses. Macs do Windows now! ;)

You can completely replace outlook by using entourage on OS X.
I had to work with several Windows based cubicle farmers, who relied solely on outlooks stupidity.

From what I can tell you sit around in a t-shirt and work at home. Like I, and most intelligent people do.

At any rate I’d like to see that list of indispensable Windows Software that wont run on OS X.

And you can keep your PC box. install osX86 on it.

I have spent my life as child growing up with Commodore VIC20, Commodore 64/128, Amiga 500, then on to Windows. I continued using Windows in my early teen years, then onto a combination of Windows, BeOS, Linux, BSD Unix and Solaris.

I have owned and sold 3 companies and currently on my 4th. We are a tech company, specializing in Web Services and although our primary server is running Windows Server 2003, I have now switched all of my systems (Workstations, Finance/Billing, Development) over to Mac OS X and have never looked back. I was also tied to the Outlook incompatibility, which I blame solely on Microsoft’s lack of desire to be compatible with anything not made by them. I mean come on, Microsoft is trying to replace PDF and Flash files as the standard for their own technology that will only work on Windows and IE.

Lets face it Chris. There is nothing on Windows that you require, and the Outlook excuses is just that… an excuse… and I hear it all too often from Windows zealots, who deep down inside, are simply afraid of change. Believe me, I even heard it from myself. I am a Microsoft Certified Technician, ran 2 computer design, installation and repair companies, had a crew of .NET developers, but they are gone now. I have no use for them as I deal now only in cross platform application development. It is an idea that Microsoft refuses to embrace.

Make the switch… this is coming from a long time Windows user and developer… don’t let an excuse like Outlook be the reason… something tells me you are not familiar with OS X, outside of others telling you about it, because one you use it for 1 week, I guarantee you won’t want to go back to Windows. Its that simple.

Oh, and by the way, to the poster above calling himself j. brotherlove, am I correct in that you just told Chris he couldn’t tinker wtih a Mac? Are you that uninformed? Mac OS runs on BSD UNIX… you can’t get any more tinker capable than a UNIX machine. You happen to not understand what UNIX is, how to use it and the capabilities that run circles around Windows NT based systems…. Tinker is one thing LINUX/UNIX systems excel at. Don’t use lies and misunderstanding as a reason to hide your fear of switching.

Oh, and I almost forgot… since you can run Windows through Parallels or even nativiely through Bootcamp, then why on earth would you want to buy a standard PC anyway?

Vista runs perfectly fine on Mac hardware, in fact, I’d say better, simply because Apple, being a hardware company, focuses on the best driver support… no need for Vista to work too hard when the drivers developed by apple for their specific hardware has more time and care put into it than all the 3rd party parts manufacturers trying desperately to develop for Vista.

One machine, both Operating Systems… how can you go wrong? You run Windows on a Mac, but you can’t run Mac on a standard PC. Due to the fact that a true OS designed for productivty needs to spend more time working for you, rather than against you with incompatible hardware. Micorosft should have gone into the hardware industry, instead they chose to try and support every 3rd party product on the market… this lowers the stability, means Microsoft spends more time trying to fix bugs with hardware than it does focusing on productivity features… which is why Mac OS is chosen by so many television studios, movie studios, photographers, musicians, graphic artists and web developers… productivity is at the core of Apple.

Just remember… the best of both worlds, or pigeonholed into a proprietary world with no where to go… the choice is simple.

“Even so, do you realize that my life still revolves tightly around Outlook?”

3 options open to you:

1) Use MS Outlook through parallels or fusion in coherence mode

2) Use MS Entourage, the mac version of MS Outlook.

3) Use the free stuff that comes with macs, like Mail, iCal, TestEdit, etc.

Leopard is working great. Even with my scanner. :)
