I know not what I've started nor do I care. In this materialistic society, many have strived for “S/He who dies with the most wins” philosophy. I don' t subscribe to that thinking. I agree with the Other Chris and I buy what I like, when I like. I give to others depending on occasions and not when it's the time of the year commercialized crap. And not having to openly displayed or talk about what you got, why not post a list of what you gave instead? In that case, you could be called a braggard if you can afford to give a 10 carat rock to your housekeeper. Keep what you got and what you gave to yourself. No po' person living on skid row cares.

The Plaza Mall here in Sac Town was magical enough, the lights, the trees, the hustle and bustle.
I got a color TV, home baked goodies, e-cards, calls and the new hard drive on my wish list. I cooked everything from scratch and loved the whole experience.

Give and getting. That is all he mentioned. The only magic in that would be if he gave anbd received but nobody had any money for the shit. Thats not even magic. That would be stealing.
Like I said, christmas would be like any other holiday during the year if there was no gift giving or receiving. You cannot say it is the biggest holiday of the year because its religious significance – becaise if THAT were the case, any half witted christian knows Easter (ressurection) is more important. I don't hear months worth of easte rmusic and every turn see a decoration or stores having sale after sale for Easter (even though, somewhere down the line it became a “one gift” holiday too).

Most people choose to make it very material. Chris is a perfect example. Many of the people posting in this thread are perfect examples. Especially the Al guy who got a new mercedes.
We would not know how to survive without our material goods. Lets be honest.

I wonder how “merry” christmas would really be for most Americans if they had nothing to give or receive?
Honestly, think about it. Most of you cannot honestly say it would be a decent christmas if that were the case.

Other Chris,
I agree with you that Christmas is disgustingly commercialized and people care too much about material wealth. For this, I have been very open in criticizing the holidays in America.
However, in Chris's defense, his post merely lists what he received; he made no significant statement about what it means to him. Whatever the holiday – birthday, anniversary, whatever – it's still cool to get fun stuff.
Don't confuse this post with his previous post, “A Very Merry Christmas” and automatically think the sentence “This is the BEST Christmas ever” necessarily relates to his gifts.

I'm more than just a little annoyed by how materialistic you and pretty much everyone else commenting here is. Why does the value of Christmas have anything to do with the goods that were exchanged? You make is sound like just one vast commodity market in retail goods.
My thought: just buy yourself the stuff that you want, when you want it and on Christmas, just enjoy the time spent with your loved ones rather than drool over what they got for you and lament over what they didn't get for you.
