HDTV Happiness
As I mentioned on my show the other night, our house is finally basking in the glow of HDTV! It's truly an amazing experience, viewing high definition television within the comfort of your own home. Every single pixel is painted in happiness, dipped in the stream of media gold. My only issue now is: I don't want to watch regular television. If it's 4:3, it's not for me. If it's less than 1080i, then I'm not your guy. We're now finding ourselves watching snoozer programming only because it looks astounding on the HD screen. How did I ever get along without HDTV? Only one who has walked the path of high definition could answer that question with conviction. The only frustrations I have are beyond everybody's control!
I need more HDTV content – period. Not just movie channels, not just random local programs, not just a few digital cable stations. Even OnDemand doesn't give me high definition access (thanks again, Comcast). For the first time in my life, I'm underwhelmed with the quality of DVDs – they used to look phenomenal on my old televisions. I don't know who's going to win the HD DVD battle (or when), but we're all suffering in the meantime. I also need an HD-capable Windows Media Center that supports digital cable out-of-the-box. Oh, and I need the Xbox 360, too. HDTV all the way from this point forward, man.

I'm still soft on HDTV because I think they spec'd the bitrate too low, and the macroblock artifacts stick out like a sore thumb to my eyes (on fast moving content). Do I just have eagle eyes, or is anybody else seeing it?

Doesn't DirecTV offer 100% HD? or was it Digital?
Can somebody confirm that? Their commercials are so random.
I can't afford to leave Comcast because my internet bill would go up to 60something dollars if I drop the TV service with them =( and DSL is simply not an option in my area. How convenient eh?

I decided to hold out for a couple weeks.
Samsung's new 1080p DLPs are going to be available as soon as next week with 10,000:1 contrast ratios. Finally a display that has it all!

Hold up, let's be serious for a second – do you watch TV to look at pretty colors, or do you watch it because of the content? We have a Samsung DLP HDTV, and absolutely love it. The thing is, watching INHD and INHD2 is nice on occassion, but it gets old quick. Luckily, Comcast provides a high definition dual-tuner DVR. I find that this more than meets my HD needs, especially when it isn't rerun season. Shows like Lost, King of Queens, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brian, Saturday Night Live (HD next season), heck – even the news, all look astounding. Tsk tsk, Chris. You should have checked with your resident gadget guy before the purchase ;)

HDTV! Good for you. I'll have to be widowed before I can get HDTV. The other half thinks that 27″ TV is “huge” but I've seen plasma HDTVs at the high end brick & mortar place where we bought our high-end music system.
Once you've got HDTV, you'll never go back.
