E-Mail:

Have You Tried the New AOL Desktop?

iPhone is a regular member of our chat room, and sent me a surprising email the other day. He has apparently found something from AOL that he is happy with. Take a look:

I wanted to share something GOOD AOL made. No I’m not kidding, I actually like the app really well. It’s called AOL Desktop. It’s available for the Mac and PC both. Yes, it may be AOL, but it actually has been very reliable. When you first open AOL Desktop, it will give you a toolbar at the top which you can customize. It kinda reminds me of Webkit, except it has a better User Interface, and crashes a few times. But remember, we’re talking about AOL. The best thing is the browser. They fully changed the browser… and at some points it was actually faster than Safari. I went to Chris’ site from my AOL browser and my Safari browser at the same time (have them both as my home page). AOL desktop browser beat Safari by 7.62 seconds. I also tried websites like Plurk, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and Friendfeed. AOL Desktop beat Safari by about 1-2 seconds every time when loading pages fully. That may not seem like that big of a difference, but it really is when you add up all the pages you load in a normal day.

Also, you can have AIM, E-mail, and your browser all in one app. Of course… Apple mail is MUCH better than AOL’s e-mail app. I wouldn’t recommend using the e-mail app. But, I definitely recommend you try out the browser.

Thanks, iPhone for passing this along. I’m sure several people will be checking this out in the near future. What other apps do all of you recommend that we may be skeptical about the quality of? Let’s hear what you’re using.

Hi.

RealPlayer has a LOUSY reputation on Windows, but its decent on Mac and it has a neat webclip downloader for youtube and other sites for simple download.

im absolutly CERTIAN that i suggested he send this to you. I said it on plurk, but i cant find that message :S

Hey I just FINALLY got my grandparents away from AOL. it used to be clunky and slow. They used to think that the computer was AOL. You know they never opened anything, but AOL. Now I have gotten them to all the Apple standard Apps. I will keep them and myself there. I just am not a fan of AOL. Last time I checked which was a while back AOL took over my PC. I know have a personal grudge to them. So for now I will stay put. I might give it a run for its money though.

I would never install this thing on my computers, not even on a dare.

ARRRGGHHHH Why did I let you talk me in to that! And I haven’t had my coffee so I didn’t think to do a custom install instead of letting it go hog wild.

It triggered a virus alert, installed a toolbar on firefox, and now it wants to update security… When will the learn not to be so freaking invasive? When will I learn not to install random crud on my computer just because someone else likes it?

I wouldn’t touch anything that AO-H3ll makes with an 8 foot pole.

i would like to tell you guys about jing which is a nice utility to snap pics and create screencasts. its available on both mac and windows.

Actually, The new AOL is pretty cool but I found it is very very buggy. I am using my good old trusty IE7. I have a AOL account but I never use it. I really suggest not using AOL just for a browser but if you got aol and aim it would be very good software for you.

What Do You Think?
