Sergio writes: “I recently had my wisdom teeth removed, and wanted to share my tips on how to deal with the operation with the community. So without further adieu, here are my Top 5 Tips for dealing with Wisdom Teeth Removal.”

  • Generally speaking, the younger one is, the easier getting the procedure done will be. This doesn’t mean get it done before your baby teeth are all gone. If your dentist suggests that they should be removed, it is best to get them done at the earliest opportunity. My oral surgeon showed me my teeth when he was done, and said that the way my roots were shaped, the process would have been very difficult if I had waited until I was older to have the teeth removed.
  • When the procedure is over, your first priority is to create a clot. Your gums will be bleeding, and the oral surgeon or his/her assistant will have put gauze in the back of your mouth. It is important to clench your jaw down on the gauze, as the pressure will expedite the clotting process. You should change the gauze when you get home, and repeat the process. When removing the gauze, be sure to do so gently, so as not to remove any clotted blood from the area. This part of the process was by far the most uncomfortable for me. I had a great deal of trouble getting my gums to clot and stop bleeding. After my third round of gauze, I was still bleeding. I used moist teabags wrapped in gauze, and after about 20 minutes of clenching my jaw, the bleeding had finally stopped.
  • Eat before taking painkillers! It is very important to have a full stomach before taking painkillers, especially the strong ones you will more than likely be prescribed. Although you will be very limited as far as your diet is concerned, you must eat something. Pudding, Jello, and yogurt are good if you are really sore. You may even be able to swallow pancakes and french fries if you eat them slowly and in small pieces. Either way, be sure to eat before taking your painkillers, as this will help prevent you from getting a stomachache, feeling nauseous, or otherwise reacting negatively toward the drugs.
  • Ice like it’s your job! Ice both sides of your face on your lower and upper jaw at 20 minute intervals. Be sure to have 4 small ice packs, 2 for each side of your face. Ice for twenty minutes with 2 of the packs, the have all 4 packs n the freezer for another 20 minutes, then ice with the /other/ 2 packs for twenty minutes, then 20 minutes with both in the freezer, and so on. This ensures that every ice pack will have a full hour to freeze in between uses. Set an alarm to go off at 20 minute intervals, as it is very easy to lose track of time. As annoying as it may be, icing the first day is very important, as it prevents your cheeks from swelling to ridiculous sizes. Editor’s Note: An excellent ice pack is to take a washrag and wet it. Ring it out, and place in freezer. These are perfect for facial swelling, as the washrag will mold to the side of your face/cheek perfectly!
  • Most importantly, LISTEN TO YOUR ORAL SURGEON! Sorry to shout, but this is incredibly important. His/her advice trumps all of these tips. He or she will have much more experience than I do in these matters. For instance, he may have you icing at different intervals, or forming a clot differently, etc. It is very important that you follow all of the advice and directions given by your oral surgeon exactly. Failure to do so could result in taking longer to heal, or worse. Ask your oral surgeon for a list of instructions, and bring a legal pad and pen to the surgery. That way, you can write down the instructions if he has no documentation to give you. Most oral surgeons will, however, give you a list of written instructions.

i got them out, while i was AWAKE under NO SEDATIVE!

whats “we’ll E ya later” mean?
I know hes saying goodbye but i’ve never heard that before

@_@ im 13 @_@!!! R u serius the dentist says i’ve got them grown like half way @_@! That was awhile ago now there almost completetly grown. i DO NOT wanna get the pulled out at my age -_- =|

I had mine taken out when I was 18. It was an awful experience. My immune system is quite strong so the knock out drugs didn’t work in the slightest. boy there was alot of blood too. My mouth refused to clot and the first night I almost drowned in my own blood. The stitching wasn’t taken out properly either so I had to DIY it. that was awful

geek language i suppose :/

Well, it’s like e-mail, and e-books. The “e” means electronic. email=electronic mail. It’s the electronic way to say good-bye. Geek terminology correct me if I’m wrong. =D “electronic you later” aka e yah later.

you said oral…lol….awesome!

3 out of 4 doctors spit in your mouth.

I dont know where i heard that one :S

Had mine removed about 4 years ago. My dentist removed them as they came in — so I was awake for each ‘removal’. He had to break my jaw once to get one of the teeth out. That wasn’t too fun to hear. Pain meds are the best thing — also avoid eating real food for a day. Infected incisions are NOT something you want to deal with.

I got my wisdom teeth taken out when I was 19 by an Army dentist in Oakland, CA. I had my appt in the morning and by that evening I was eating steak at the chow hall. And I had a caramel nip later that night. I wasn’t lucky enough to get a strong pain med, so I had to settle for Tylenol 3. Which was enough really, because I never had any pain or problem with blood clotting. I did have some bloody drool on the ride back to Monterey, but my seatbelt sopped that up good.

I guess I was definitely lucky it went off with out a hitch for me.

This was a wonderful first person commentary on what a person goes through after extractions and it was an excellent shared experience post that I could point my patients to! Thanks for the plug Chris glad our talk made a lasting impression. As far as dentists and depression in Seattle goes, that’s probably true, dentists in Seattle are pretty high strung, it’s tough to stay sane there, but I think may the traffic causes more suicides. Thanks for the occasional oral update. I’ll have to send you some high tech flossing aids.

Sincerely

Gregory Birch DDS

This is funny cause I had mine out last week!! It went pretty well and I have healed pretty well.
I went into day surgery at hospital which my dentist recommended. I never had any unbearable pain, maybe due to my dedication to medication lol. 1 Week later and my jaw sometimes aches after I eat but its getting better everyday.
My tip - Definitely rinsing with warm salt water helped A LOT! Do it a few times a day and that will help the healing process.

People like to scare you with all these bad stories of wisdom teeth removal but my experience was fine.

my mom didn’t have the car the day i got my wisdom teeth removed so i had to walk home with an ice pack on my face
then it like 4-5 days to heal and it was very painful
then 2 weeks after everything healed i blew balloons for a party and it was swollen again for another week
it was the worst experience of my life

haha ironic you would post this. I had the operation yesterday.

good list. I had to have 4 wisdom teeth removed before I got braces, 2 of them were coming in totally sideways. The surgery was painless and I didn’t have much pain in recovery. I could have got addicted to the pain killers pretty easily though. They were codeine based and got me wired for some reason.

I had two of my wisdom teeth removed in September of 2007. I was able to keep the other two. The only tip that I have that wasn’t already mentioned is to rinse your mouth (like you would with mouthwash) using warm saltwater. This will help to disinfect your mouth.

None of my wisdom teeth every emerged. That’s good. The bad thing is that instead of having partially emerged wisdom teeth, one of my 2nd molars is partially emerged!

lol he T-bagged himself.

I wish someone had given me these tips when I had my wisdom teeth removed last year….

May I add also not to wait too long before getting them out. Try doing it before you’re 25-27 years old otherwise it can be extremely painful since your jaw will be completely hardened by then.

The normal iPods also have the countdown timers. Very good tips. I still have my wisdom teeth.

Chris doesn’t floss !!

I am willing to bet that Chris never rinses with Listerine.

Chris’ mouth = germs & bacteria = gross !!

**** braces. They’re bullshit that orthodontists feed their family with.

Getting my wisdom’s out 2 years ago was PAINFUL when I got home! I had the surgery done around 1-2pm, got home at 3:30, woke up at 7pm screaming in pain, took pain pills, slept until 2am, stayed up for 3 hours, went to bed, woke up at 3:30pm. That was the first day.

^ One other thing there, a LOT of sleep will come after being drugged up! (I got 2x the normal dose since I’m really tall.) Sleep also accelerates clotting as the body does a lot more while you’re out cold.

Had 4 upper back teeth taken out (2 either side) and titanium screws put in for implants about 1 month ago. All done in hospital. They have to be very careful taking them out so as not to damage the bone. Ate omelette and pasta dishes for 2 days and then back to normal. No pain at any time. Maybe I’m just lucky.

I haven’t had my wisdom teeth out yet. Though, I think I’m really close to probably needing to get them pulled.

I still have my wisdom teeth. I should have them removed. Right now, they’re not rotting or anything, but they are pushing my other teeth forward.

I actually haven’t had them pulled yet, but I’m just 15. :P

I have all my wisdoms and surprisingly my dentist said my mouth is large enough for them. so I have all 32 teeth. I am only 15.

I’m getting my wisdom teeth pulled soon, and I’m freaking out. I hope I’m as lucky as the few on here who said it didn’t hurt for them, because honestly I couldn’t be more scared.

i have my wisdom teeth

i know this is a stupid question but what are wisdom teeth?

My wisdom teeth were impacted and removed when I was around 20 years old (I think).

do everyone get them

i tink braces look so cuteeeeeeee

i just had one removed today , what can i take to make the pain go away? hurts like hell, havnt slept in 2 days 0 - o

I got mine out last thursday(today is tuesday) so what, 6 days ago? Idk, overall the surgery and everything was fine. I don’t remember anything and so I didn’t have to force down any pills they gave me a liquid loratab which was nice. But now, the stitches are coming out and are bleeding. Idk why? Any ideas?

I just got four of my wisdom teeth removed yesterday morning. so far so good, the pain is very minimal thanks to the help of tylenol tres. i do have a bit of jaw pain, but i was under sedation so i’m thinking it’s because of the extra freezing they put in my gums. the swelling went away within 4 hours, with the help of ice packs.. though i only used one and it worked really well. i’m starvin marvin though, i’ve only had a cup of soup and icecream to eat hahah. also, luckily all of my 4 wisdom teeth were up and ready to come out therefore i ihave no stitches, just “holes” .. anyways good luck guys.

I’m 27 and I just got 2 of my wisdom teeth removed yesterday - upper and lower, same side, both erupted. I had local anaesthesia and it actually took longer for the dentist to numb me up (15 mins) than it did to extract the teeth (3-5 mins each tooth)! During the procedure, I felt no pain..just pressure..it felt like she was taking a small shovel and basically shoveling out the tooth. Almost like a gum massage, hehe.
Afterwards and since then I have been taking ibuprofen for the pain, which is minimal and dull and hardly even noticeable now, a day later. The swelling was brief and lasted for only 4 hrs or so immiediately after the extraction…I iced it every 15-20 mins, as instructed. I applied gauze to the holes once ever hour, for the first 4 hrs or so, until bleeding began to subside. I’ve been eating soft and liquid foods (especially liking the protein shakes and applesauce), drinking lots of water and OJ, and today have been rinsing with warm salt water after every meal and in between times, too. Seems to all be healing great so far. Now, here’s hoping for no dry socket and I will be aok :)
