Hard Drive Problems

A caller said he has an HP Laptop with what he believes is a BIOS problem. When you turn on the machine, it goes through the boot screen, and then freezes. He’s tried doing a full system recovery, which doesn’t work. He gets errors with codes that he isn’t able to narrow down further than the BIOS.
He has deleted the partition, wiped the entire computer, and tried to reinstall. He gets the exact same error code about an executable file, during Windows setup. He cannot even install the OS on the computer. A lot of people in chat are suggesting that the hard drive itself is corrupt. He tried installing Vista, and received the same error code. He then installed an old copy of Windows ME… and it worked beautifully. It won’t install any other OS.
Someone else is recommending trying Darik’s Boot and Nuke. Darik’s Boot and Nuke (”DBAN”) is a self-contained boot floppy that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction. This may help to wipe it all out, including things that could possibly have survived the partition deletion.
If ONLY Windows ME will install on this system and nothing else… I would call an Excorcist. That is just downright scary… and not “right”.

I totally agree. He should run DBAN and then install Windows. But if the problem continues for some reason he’ll need to buy a new Hard Drive. But I think DBAN will take care of the problem.

Hi i think the problem with his computer is a faulty RAM module that probably has partial functionality thats why Me works its takes less memory, I had the same problem with my notebook and i used a RAM tester and it said RAM had errors, When i booted my computer it said it couldnt load a XP file at startup (beacause it was to big). I bought a new bigger faster RAM module and now my computer works great. So try a RAM testing program first. Chris i like your shows as im a tech guy like you.

Sounds like a bios problem and I would return the laptop if its under a warranty. I had a problem with my HP, the onboard video card went bad and I had to send it to them. I would return it.

I really want another Hard Drive for my PC! A 1TB internal hard drive would do the trick nicely……WOW, I can see snow floating and dancing outside, covering the ground as soft as feathers. Why does February bring such delightful weather?
Anyhow, about my Hard Drive wishes….it seems that it will be a hard drive to get my Hard Drive!!!!!

That’s definitely a hard-drive problem. A friend of mine and I myself have had the exact same problems on our notebook PCs. Usually the symptoms are: blue screen upon boot, freezing on OS load screen, or extremely slow (like 20 minutes) to boot.
If you have these symptoms, you can be almost sure it’s a hard drive failure.

Not saying it isn’t the hard drive, but I have run into similar issues with several computer’s trying to install Windows XP and/or Windows 2000. Those operating systems would not install, yet when I tried Windows 98 it would. After much frustration and research, I swapped out the RAM and then the installation ran perfectly. Now if I run into installation problem’s, first thing I do is replace the RAM.

RAM! No doubt, or… mayby harddrive. What kind of video was this anyway? PC help desk? That guy didn’t know much, if it is a BOIS problem, restoring the CMOS would clear that one right of, still doesn’t work, replace the ram ;)

A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids’ room, the father said,”Take the kids and get out of the house. We’ll call the police, we don’t have a clown statue.” The “clown statue” is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don’t post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand

Check bios to see if Virus protection is on. Sometimes OS will not load because of that switch in bios.

i would bet aloto of money that his issue was not a hard drive issue, but rather a bad ram issue… the reason it was running ME insted and not XP (or vista) is because XP requires apx. 100 megs of ram and ME only requires about 50 or so…
if the sector a sector at about 75 megs of ram was bad, the OS wouldnt beable to read/write the data in that space, telling the OS that it couldnt load the file. (by default)

Great video chris and btw,I must add that you letting people ask you questions and answer them it is much easier.Plus it makes it alot like the old show :).
Also on the video A word of advice to the person who had problems he could try to clean the hard drive itself and see if that fixes it.Ofcourse like you said if it just likes running on windows ME thats cursed!!!!!!!!!! lol

You should seriously get a life. Those who call others nerds are generally dipsh1ts and incredibly stupid people.
Nothing wrong with being a nerd, better than being thick!

Why not put Windows 2000? If that doesnt work, it has to be something about NT compatibility with something!
