Hacking Netflix

If you’ve never tried Netflix, it’s certainly not for their lack of advertising. It seems like those ads literally pop up everywhere. Those who have used Netflix know the absolute convenience of never needing to visit the video store to rent movies and never experiencing the pain of a late fee. One guy knows more about Netflix than anyone else outside the company, Mike K. Mike has been Hacking Netflix (and now the subscription service from Blockbuster) for what seems like ages. If there’s anything going on of interest to Netflix customers, chances are you’ll find out at Hacking Netflix first. He’s not a shill for the company, he’s not on the payroll, he’s just a regular customer like all the millions of other Netflix customers who want more out of what’s arguably the best video rental service ever invented. Chris and Mike chat about Netflix, Blockbuster and what’s hot in video rental services over pumpkin ale.

Disappointed the Netflix audio report was NOT on the new digital download distribution.

I love Netflix for discovering the obscure classics and masterpieces forgotten in the age of shallow trendy special effects, juvenile twaddle, mediocre remakes and gross revolting slasher flics.

However even with a claimed 60K inventory they only have approx half the great films I tend to seek after reading about the actors, sceenplays, reading original novels and the biogs of directors etc.

Two major media shifts in the last generation, from film to VHS, from VHS to DVD then? At each shift, more great films are abandoned to obsolete media formats. There is no quick profit in restoration of great movie art. There is quick profit in the production of meaningless tripe. Which gets the most attention?

One certain symptom of decadence is the arbitrary discontinuation, the loss of cultural works through simple lazyness, ignorance, incompetence, and stupidity.
