It does suck that you have to reinvite everyone but really, this isn't the kind of thing you do every day right? I just migrated everything to a new gmail account so I ran into the same issue. Quickest fix was to download google talk and use the "+Add" button to add all my @gmail.com contacts to the list. It took about 5 minutes to add 70 contacts and within about 30 seconds after that people started showing up online (as they accepted the invitation).

Hi Chris,

had a really similiar issue: google decided that my nexus one was now my primary email device and promptly overwrote every single contact at the server with the paltry few on my phone.

My solution was to delete every contact I had on Gmail, export my contacts list from Thunderbird to csv and re-import at Gmail. As soon as I did that Gmail merged that list with my Gtalk file and the bulk of my contacts immediately re-appeared.

Ha, same thing happened to me just this last week. It did not dawn on me what I did until I read your post... oh well, not everything we do online is super automated. sometimes the robots cant solve all the issues.

I have an ongoing battle to find the perfect setup for maintaining ONE contact list. What is your current setup?

I am having the same problem right now actually. I do think a solution would be if you're desperate to add your gtalk to contacts back would be to export your google contacts again as CSV fle, and save a copy as a back up. Open the non back up copy of your contacts, filter it such that all contacts ending in @google.com are no longer their, then delete those contacts not ending in @google.com. Go to your google contacts delete all of those contacts. Then upload the .csv file with your contacts who have an @google.com, then add all of them to gtalk using the invite contacts function. Then merge the back up copy of your contacts to your gmail contacts. I think this would work but it would also fall under the category of jumping through hoops

I don't remember what URL means, I cannot find "auto fill" on the toolbar, and I cannot get anything on my gmail page after I click on the little red envelope and the signals come on saying "loading" and the little green ribbon at the bottom of the screen stops flashing and in the lower left corner says "done" there is still no address book, no in box or instructions for sending or receiving gmail. I want my gmail page back with instructions and address book. HELP! Wilma sartain at wilmasway@gmail.com

i think that once you import all your contacts back you will get prompted that someone you once chatted with is inviting you to chat.
