Perhaps it is because we needed an escape to what was happening in pre-post world war II or perhaps it was because film was still young and we were learning the trade still, who knows but i can say this. GWTW is a classic, a wonderful classic that is still better then most films made today. Todays hollywood is just not the same and never will be. Either we want hyper-realism or silly dumbed down escapism. I think GWTW was a balance of the two. I will take this film any day over Cameron's piece of S--- Titanic sap fest any time. Real escapist romance belongs with adults, not a punk kid and spoiled dis-honorable wench who throws priceless jewelry into the ocean.Transformers, now that is silly. This is a film for 14 year old boys who dream of numb-plots and bland acting with sound effects that would make you go deaf.

If you mean acting/drama wise, acting was something of a different element back in those days. I seriously doubt Chris' opinion of the movie is any personal attack against your aunt... Had she written and directed it, maybe. I've worked on some silly things too for a job.
I have no opinion on GWTW... of course I've only seen it in parts.

LOL….seven degrees of separation!<br

(from IMDb)
Lydia Schiller(http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0771663/) .... script clerk (uncredited)
IMDb claims a "script clerk", however, she was really David O. Selznick personal secretary. :)

Be nice now! I had an aunt that worked on that film!<br

I still remember the first time I watched that movie in an old-time theater with heavy velvet curtains that opened to reveal the large screen; the balconies; the ushers; the quality popcorn. Good 'ol days.
Gone With the Wind was meant to be viewed in a real theater - not these 12 postage-stamp size screen cineplex theaters!

Maybe it's a Southerner thang?<br

The Ten Commandments is pretty silly, as is any random version of Romeo and Juliet. Great drama often proceeds from overly contrived scenarios.

As long as “silly” isn't meant to minimize its greatness, I can live with that.
