Gizmo Project Trumps Skype
What sounds like a science experiment from Gremlins or the code name of the next cell phone operating system? It’s the latest effort from Michael Robertson, the guy who previously brought us MP3.com and Lindows Linspire. Robertson is known for being disruptive (in the technology sense), so it’s no surprise he’s involved in a project aimed squarely at shaking up the status quo in the phone space. Skype continues to get all the love from fans of p2p VoIP solutions despite having one of the more closed networks in PC to PC calling. Watch for Gizmo Project to start encroaching on Skype territory with free voicemail and built-in recording that works without any configuration hassles. Gizmo has another leg up on Skype – open access to SIP networks. It’s how I called a UCLA campus phone from my computer, without needing outbound call routing. Chris recently spoke with Michael Robertson about his vision for Gizmo Project and the future of VoIP.
