Getting in Trouble with the Mac Pro

Meet Big Mac… or at least the box in which Big Mac sits. It arrived today, and I am officially making my move away from Windows as my primary Operating System. It won’t be a perfect transition, of course.
I’ve been living inside the world of Windows and Mac for awhile now. With the arrival of Big Mac… I will be flip flopping. I will be primarily using the Mac, and running Windows inside of a VM.
I don’t know of any better way to initiate this change, other than to play this song. I’m sure I’ll get into trouble for this, but I just have to do it…
Music for 2001 Space Odyssey begins to play in the background… nice and loud… as I embrace the box at the end of the song.

Chris, I saw you on TV the other day. Sunday night or last night. Some show that’s like America’s Funniest, but the videos were international (including U.S.). The scene was from G4 TechTV; some guy was holding some little device that he said was a “one of a kind”, and as he was saying this he accidentally broke it and dropped it to the floor. You were standing there with him. It was hilarious.

This site is turning into yet another Apple fanboy website — and there’s about a million of them out there.
If Apple computers are so flawless, why do people still need help with them?

John, fanboy website? I don’t think so. Chris is not biased.

It was from the Call for Help. Some dude named Chris Pirillo was hosting it. It was one of the best shows on television while it was still on the air (on one of the best networks TechTV). It was a funny clip, unless you were the guy that owned the irreplaceable item. See video below.

Apple’s computers are not flawless, but Apple does have above average customer service and an overall high percentage of satisfied customers. Not hype, but a fact.

Chris, if this is your official move to Apple, who’ll be taking over writing for Windows Fanatics?
Inquiring minds want to know…

Chris is definatly not an Apple “fanboy”
He is just moving to what he believes is the best for what he wants to do at the moment. He even stated before that He was still going to run and talk Windows as well as OSX.

Congratulations Chris. I over heard that you like the wireless mighty mouse. I like it too but there is a problem with the trackball sticking. I have tried the alcohol trick and I dismantled it which was not so fun. But the best way i found that works to clean out the trackball is to turn it over and run the track ball around in a circle on a piece of paper. Other than that it is quite responsive and I prefer it over other mice. Just a quick tip go into the mouse properties and set up the right click on the mouse. That is why I chose this mouse because it is the only apple mouse that has a right click but most people don’t know how to turn it on. Good luck setting up everything.

John – if you don’t like Chris posting about Apple, then why are you visiting and commenting? Also, Apple computers aren’t perfect, and Chris admits this, and any Apple user who is sensible would to.
Anyway, the Mac Pro sure looks nice Chris!

That’s some seriously nice hardware, Chris. (And I hope you enjoy it as much as I suspect you will.) Why wouldn’t anyone want it? Anyone who could afford it, that is. It’s a bit too top-of-the-range for me.
I can’t see why this should put the noses of Microsoft fans out of joint. As has been pointed out, you can run, and will be running, Windows on it anyway. Someone would have to be sort-of *in love* with Microsoft to resent the fact that you’ve got a machine on which Windows is there but isn’t the primary and only OS.
Are you going to virtualize other stuff? That machine sounds like the ideal environment for playing with Linux and *BSD as well.

Chris–
That “music for 2001 Space Odyssey begins to play in the background” of your daydreams is called “Also Sprach Zarathustra” (”Thus Spoke Zarathustra”) by Richard Strauss. Just because we still have a monkey in the Oval Office doesn’t mean you can get away with vague, half-baked cultural references.
But please keep us all informed in great detail about your Mac Pro purchase. I want such a machine and intend to learn from your mistakes…er, experiences.
You *are* getting the 8-core beast with the GeForce 8800 GT card, right? ‘Cause if you aren’t, the only reason I’d have to come to site would be to check out the goofy faces you post. Mum must be so proud ;-)

Run color sync to calibrate. Don’t touch any of the other controls except the gamma…if your worried about screwing up you can always get back to the state you started at by picking it from the color profiles in the color tab…this isn’t Windows. System wide color management.
Sound card? You’re kidding right?
Hold the shift key down & click on the Safari icon to launch it…this will clear the cache…If Safari continues to crash.

Like what? How many companies have their software written specifically for Macs? Hardly any…No matter how much you would like otherwise, windows dominates the market. Most software is written either for windows or unix/based systems. You can’t write native C++ code for windows on a mac. I am not even sure if the CLR has been ported to Macs…

the reason it can use 16 gigs of RAM is cause it is just a server, no wonder they can’t play games

bull crap, xeons are server processors and it is a dual core board which is only used in servers for non Mac use. Also only servers use FB-DIMMS, sorry in my book that is a server!

i never said it was a running server software though did it, i only stated that it uses server parts which to me makes it a server, and where i said that only servers use FB-DIMMs, i meant most computers that use FB-DImms were servers.

The mac pro is a work station, a high performance one, i’ll admit. and (like all computers) there is nothing stopping you from using it as a server. But this isn’t what the mac pro was designed for.
