When I posted an email recently from TheDub, I received a lot of negative feedback. My answer remains: if your laptop doesn’t run well after upgrading to Vista, you can always go back to XP. TheDub also sent me a new email, telling me about a free tool to help with Vista performance on laptops.
Vista has been out for about a year now. It’s good for some, ok for others, and not-so-good for still others. I’m disappointed in Vista, but not because of performance issues. For me, it’s more about what Vista should be… but isn’t.
This time around, TheDub said in his email that he found a great free tool that helps his laptop run better while using Vista. VistaBattery causes your laptop to automatically do a couple of different things when the power cord is unplugged from the wall. This tiny program will save up to 70% of your battery by disabling those nice, but greedy Vista features. It will automatically change your power scheme to “power saving” mode, and disables the Vista Sidebar, Aero, and Desktop Search. All of these nifty features can be resource hogs… and that includes your battery.

s and other letter/number combinations in their movies, as an inside joke. Windows Vista really guzzles electricity — when I’m remote and using the EV-DO card, my HP notebook drains its 8-cell battery in about an hour. ButChris Pirillopointed me to Vista Battery Saver, a little utility that can automatically turn off Aero and the sidebar when you’re on battery — supposedly saving lots of power. I haven’t had a chance to benchmark the battery life yet

are turning off Aero and Sidebar only when on battery. It claims to save “up to 70%” of your battery usage which would truly be remarkable. I plan on trying this out over the weekend to see exactly how much it can help my battery usage. viaChris Pirillo

OS X tends to run faster and smoother with each newer release. They optimise the code a bunch and really do fix things.

Yeah, whatever Chris. Well XP is faster than Vista…huh. Windows ME is faster than XP; 98 is faster than ME; 95 is faster than 98 and windows 3.1 is the fastest of all. So if want speed install windows 3.1 because this guy says that it is all about speed. The truth of the matter is computers are getting faster as operating systems are becoming more complicated. New operating systems are not meant for old computers. Vista looks better and seems a healthier operating system than XP.

you can speed up the performance of vista.
1 of the best way i think is to go to the divice manger look for the hardrives. it should be in disk drives click properties, policies and adjust them o to the performance setting. this makes acondierable diference to the start up time of vista.

I use a laptop with Vista Its great except for the battery life and it takes long to load. There’s also a driver issue. Other than that, I love Vista.

So after making these tweaks, the user is really left with an XP machine with some somewhat transparent changes in the background. In truth…doing this, users are turning off whatever “WOW” there was supposed to be.

Hey Chris. Its Jimbo2687. you probably don’t remember me but about 4 months ago, I asked if you knew anything about the Gateway M-285E tablet laptop. and you said no. lol but anyways 4 months later, I have my tablet with windows Vista along with 200 other computers at my school, (My school went paper free this year) and let me tell you. Windows Vista ROCKS! it is so much easier to use than XP!

So… suggesting that tool to chris I was just being helpful. When you have your laptop unplugged its a huge power drain to have that power saving laptop hd indexing all your files so searches are faster. And this tool disables the transparent effects on battery… why? To save power, cpu clock cycles and gpu clock cycles. Is it amazing no… Is vista amazing period? No… not really. I’ve shut off some of the vista wow… for example turning off SuperFetch once and for all my vista machine now runs as fast maybe even faster then XP did. I like to play with the latest and greatest and am happy that vista is now performing so quickly for me. I do not think technologies such as SuperFetch and Desktop Search should even be enabled on laptop computers. Laptops aren’t powerhouses usually, especially school ones like mine, its not a “gaming” laptop or a macbook pro.
I disabled some Vista “WOW” if you can even call it that, I just say whoah like chis lol. Now I have a lot of the nifty features of Vista with the speed I liked from Windows XP.
By the way I have those Transparent Glass Windows on and love it! SO YEAH TAKE THAT!

Lol chris… I was tired.. my sentence structure gets bad in the middle of the night. What I was trying to say is Vista can’t delete, copy, move files. Xp did this instantly.. I think i tried merging sentences and made a mistake somewhere whatever lol it was late.
I’m serious about superfetch… this may be a “wow” but like i said… its as fast as xp now in most ways…
Another thing I would mention torqued me about this problem was the fact that Vista Home Premium is what the laptop shipped with and it has advertisements and documents from the dealer explaining how they did tough testing to ensure it was Vista Ultimate ready…
It makes me angry that these companies are selling vista on machines that might not be able to handle it.

Yeah in the US. Its so much easier to use a tablet. all my notes and home work are in one spot. I am NOT the most organized person. half the time I lost my homework or it would get ripped. Not anymore. I can just print it off and hand it in.( we are not completely yet. but sometime soon we upload it to sharepoint(from microsoft)).

TheDub, You’re so right about superfetch!!!
I was reading a lot of forums on what services are safe to delete.
Found one saying superfetch is okay to delete, and people were saying it stops so much ”disk thrashing”.
And for once, something worked beautifully.
It stops the disk thrashing so much just like they said, it calmed the beast.
Not only that, programs, folders, and applications open around 40% faster, just like it did on good old XP.
Not only that, for some reason my whole PC shuts down faster? Like, a lot faster.
It also seemed to help my gaming performance. I play World of Warcraft, and i’ve been trying for months to tweak it to work better on Vista, and it certainly is.
So any of you out there, i’d reccomend disabling superfetch.
Start>Run/search box>Msconfig>services>superfetch.
Back-up your PC before doing so for obviouse reasons.
This tweak works like a charm (can you call it a tweak?).
See ya!

I had vista home basic and my laptop was slow. Than i upgraded to the 30 day trial of home premium and my computer’s speed increased a lot. Than after that expired I tried windows vista ultimate. Its slower than premium but not quite as slow as basic. I would have to say if i were to decide between the 3 I would much rather have premium. You can go back to xp but why? Eventually all computers with windows will be vista and xp will be out the door. So basically i suggest home premium i liked it!!
