Gates, Dell, Ellison, Ballmer, Pogue, Jobs… Pirillo!?

Imagine my surprise when AutoMotoPortal decided to include me in their round-up for “What Cars Do Famous Geeks Drive?” I have no idea why I was included, as I’m (a) not famous and (b) NOT FAMOUS. I’m thrilled for the nod, but a bit disappointed that they didn’t hyperlink back somewhere into my known digital universe. Still, they’re 99% Acura-te:

Chris Pirillo is an Internet entrepreneur, book author, ex-TV show host and technology enthusiast. He is addicted to computer hardware and software -and the Acura TSX. According to him, the 2006 TSX is about as geeky as today’s cars can get. This car has an audio in jack, live traffic reports, Bluetooth connectivity, Zagat ratings and an excellent navigation system with voice recognition.

The car also has handsfreelink, keyless access system with driver recognition. The sound system in the Acura is a 360-watt system with AM/FM stereo, 6 disc in dash CD changer and eight speakers. There is also an XM satellite radio, MP3/auxillary input jack and home link. Other accessories include a dual zone automatic climate control system and heated front seats, theft deterrent system with an electronic immobilizer. The exterior temperature indicator lets you know what the temperature is outside.

And now, some editorial corrections: (1) I used to lease a 2004 Acura TSX; (2) I now lease a 2006 Acura RL; (3) My 2006 Acura RL was built with the “sport” package, since they were trying to get it off the lot right before the 2007s came in (as detailed in an earlier blog post); (4) The 2006 Acura RL doesn’t have an input jack – which I find wholly depressing.

Any other happy Acura owners out there?

1) The TSX does NOT have live traffic reports, 2) the picture automotoportal.com has up for the 2006 Acura TSX is actually a pre-2006 model (this is noted because of the lacking integrated fog lights), & 3) Chris Pirillo no longer drives a TSX, but instead drives an Acura RL. I don’t know what automotoprotal.com was doing, but it sure wasn’t research. Here is the entry from Chris Pirillo when he was thinking of “upgrading” his Acura TSX. Being a TSX owner myself, I actually left a comment on

TSX is a great car, I’m very happy with it, and I’m geeky, too. Congratulations on your inclusion with the “big boys”.

I’ve been an Acura owner since 1992, starting with the Legend LS. Since then I’ve purchased a 2001 MDX (the 7 month waiting list was torture back then), and have replaced the Legend with a 2006 TSX back in October. Absolutely love the car. It took a LONG time to find a worthy replacement for my Legend, but the TSX finally fit the bill.

[...] This list has some of the standard-bearer alpha geeks on the list, including El Jobso, Gates, Ellison, Ballmer (his car is almost as awesome as his office). Oddly, Chris Pirillo is on the same list, which even he found surprising. He also had to correct some minor factual errors, but otherwise, this article is fascinating. If your a nerd like me, that is… We know that geek cars are all loaded with the latest technological marvels – which are really what is supposed to turn the true geek on. So which cars do geeks prefer? Maybe the luxury car Mercedes-Benz 2007 S-Class sedan chock full of electronics – an onboard radar system, automated acceleration and braking controls, night vision display are some of the features that can be expected in this car. So let’s take a look at the most well known geeks’ cars and how they are customized. [...]

XM has traffic report channels for several cities, so I assume that’s what they meant. My city isn’t covered, but it probably works for a lot of people.

And I love my TSX anyway. ;-)
