all languages and tools use their specified library. first clear your logics on basic game development tactics. then pick up a tool/language in which you feel comfortable. start learn the basic and jump on the associated game development library. that's the best way.

personally i prefer Dev C++ ---- Allegro.

Download the demo of Blitz Basic and watch my tutorials!
You can start with a simpler Basic based language and then move onto using C++ with a graphics and sound API.

depending on what aspect of game development your like working with, do you want to a be a coder or modeler ? if your going to be a coder I would suggest learning the general concepts of OOP , so regardless of what language you use LUA,C/C++,Python or others , you will not have a problem picking up on the technology.

Also learn about assembly and how computers work. There isn't much information about x86 asm for win-32, and modern video cards are designed to use APIs, but all video games before the arrival of 32-bit in the mid-90s were programmed at the machine level and I've often wondered if this intimacy and familiarity with the hardware that programmers used to have doesn't help account for a certain "magic" that seems to be missing in today's games.

Chris, did you try the software called "Multimedia Fusion" or "The Games Factory"? It's great for basic game creators that want to make 2D game very much easier!
