Game Developer Programming Suggestions

Are you interested in become a gaming Programmer? Scott called in the other night when the phone lines were open. He wants to get into game development, and isn’t sure what Programming language he should begin to learn at first.
I feel he should start simple, and download Visual Studio. I know some in the chat room are suggesting different variations of C… but I recommend Visual Studio for a reason. That reason is that it’s designed to help make games for the Xbox. You can learn that way. If you want to really dive into this field, that is one way to go. If you want to learn to walk before you run… Visual Studio is the way to go.
I have never been a programmer myself. I just go off the recommendations of others who are in that field. Find the tool that works for you. Talk to other game devs, and see what they say. Find what’s going to be comfortable for you, in an environment where you aren’t just using Notepad.

For beginning programmers, I’d recommend an Interpreted language, like Ruby or Python. This way you don’t have to deal with a picky compiler when you’re just starting out. When you feel like you’re ready, you can move on to a compiled language, like a C language. If you like the Interpreted language, you might want to consider using a software like RPG Maker XP/RPG Maker VX. These programs will let you create games of nearly any genre and not just RPGs, as their titles imply.
In the end, it’s your call to use what you want. Just my, two cents.

Chris, did you try the software called “Multimedia Fusion” or “The Games Factory”? It’s great for basic game creators that want to make 2D game very much easier!

Python has a game library called Pygame or something o-o. But I have a problem with spelling “python” as “pythong”…

Also learn about assembly and how computers work. There isn’t much information about x86 asm for win-32, and modern video cards are designed to use APIs, but all video games before the arrival of 32-bit in the mid-90s were programmed at the machine level and I’ve often wondered if this intimacy and familiarity with the hardware that programmers used to have doesn’t help account for a certain “magic” that seems to be missing in today’s games.

depending on what aspect of game development your like working with, do you want to a be a coder or modeler ? if your going to be a coder I would suggest learning the general concepts of OOP , so regardless of what language you use LUA,C/C++,Python or others , you will not have a problem picking up on the technology.

Download the demo of Blitz Basic and watch my tutorials!
You can start with a simpler Basic based language and then move onto using C++ with a graphics and sound API.

all languages and tools use their specified library. first clear your logics on basic game development tactics. then pick up a tool/language in which you feel comfortable. start learn the basic and jump on the associated game development library. that’s the best way.
personally i prefer Dev C++ —- Allegro.
