Free Screen Capture Software for Windows

What do you use to capture video or stills on your computer? Two of my sponsors, TechSmith and ShinyWhiteBox both have excellent programs available. But TechSmith has now decided to offer slightly older versions of their screen capture software completely for FREE!
TechSmith’s Camtasia is used to make everything from training videos to PowerPoint presentations to lectures look better, reach more people, and pack more punch. Camtasia Studio screen recorder is smart, and does the hard work for you. Never created a video before? No worries, Camtasia Studio will help you look like a pro. The current version of Catasia is 5.0. It retails for $299.00 USD. However, you can now download version 3.12 absolutely free! Once you have downloaded and are installing the program, you will be asked for a product activation key. You can get that free, as well, simply by clicking this link.
The SnagIt program from TechSmith is different. SnagIt allows you to capture anything on your screen – from an area to a scrolling web page, edit your screen capture using the built-in image editor, and Share, save, and print your screen capture in the format of your choice. Create and share high-quality screen captures for your presentations, documents and blogs. The current version of SnagIt is 8.2 and costs around $40.00 for a single-user copy. However, you can download version 7.2.5 absolutely free! Again, once you’ve downloaded and are installing, you will need the key, which you can download by clicking this link.
So there you have it. More software companies should release older versions of their software for free, like TechSmith is doing. I don’t know how long this offer will last, though, so hurry and get yours today!

I’ve been using TechSmith’s products for a while, good to see these programs becoming available for free. Once people have tried the older versions I’m sure they will see that they are worth the money for the latest editions. I don’t think I could live without SnagIt.

There’s also ScreenshotCaptor from DonationCoder.com, which is free, has a built-in image editor, and will capture (or at least try, depending on settings and what you select) pretty much anything. I’ve been using it for months. So they make you register for a free registration key, but hey, it’s great freeware. I use it for the screenshots on my blog.

What some of you aren’t aware of, Is that you have a screen capture feature built into the OS, particularly if your on XP. Whatever you have on your screen you want to capture, Press the Print Screen button on the keyboard, Then open Paint which is located in the start menu/programs/accessories. While on that program, Click on Edit and Paste and it will Paste the screen you captured into Paint and you can save as a .bmp or .jpg.

Hey thanks man , I use to use SnagIt cracked back when I use to download illegal programs, I don’t do this anymore and I don’t support it. I also wanted to use Camtasia Studio because I’m planning on doing screencasting tech support in the future, so this will definetly help me. It would be better if they it was Mac compatible.

Runescape is like masturbating. No one talks about it untill they find out everyone does it. No my amigo, you are not a noob.

@TigerClaw: Yeah, we know, but that solution just seems so kludgy and convoluted. Having one app that does everything associated with a task is always nice.
