Why do you go to a country and then stay at a hotel chain?

It’s like going to Paris and eating at McDonald’s.

Have an adventure and stay at a local hotel or even better a
B&B or guest house, so you can roll with the locals and not
be the typical American tourist.

Also, your comment on the shower with the half-glass partition
is pretty common all over Europe — also the phone-booth
door showers are notorious as well.

Yeah the baths with no full curtain of glass is a norm in most places around the country (except very nice hotels). That is what I have noticed at least.
