Fox TV, Arrested Development, David Cross

You might know that I'm a great fan of Arrested Development (though not necessarily of Fox). With the last season's final episode, there were reports that the show had been canceled. Even my friends in Hollywood were mocking my disbelief that such an amazing and original television program was going to be yanked off the air for no GOOD reason. When the Bluth family came back this year, I was elated – and I tuned in for every single show. But this time, the rumors are true – Arrested Development has been canceled. Fox is the one that should be arrested – and Fox's marketing team should be thrown into an asylum. But don't take my word for it – there are others out there who agree. If you want definitive proof that ratings are *WORTHLESS* and that fans are never wrong, look no further than this situation. It's a sin that Arrested Development is going away – it's an an absolute sin for which TV executives will burn in hell. No wonder people hate television anymore… no fzcking wonder.

FOX is not know to be great decision makers. They've been bit in the ass on Firefly, Family Guy, Futureama, and several other shows. They've only recently swallowed their pride with Family Guy because the money was just so much more thank their pride was worth.
I belive they follow a formula for how long a show should remain on air. I've yet to figure it out, but I'm really starting to see a pattern with the length of the show, its time slots, and advertising dollars. i belive they try to predict – strictly through mathematics – when a show should stop airing and a new one takes its place (or when a hot show swaps time spots with it).
It's a similar formula to what Broadway uses – they try to end the show one day before the daily production of the show is no longer profitable. I can prove the Broadway formula exists … though I've yet to find evidence of FOX's formula.
Maybe if we wrote our own formula, backed it up with some scientific mumbo-jumbo, and got some publicity on it, these corporate suits would end us listening to us … in a weird round-about way.
Yup, I'm tired.

Ratings reduce all of television (and radio) to the lowest common denominator. Maximizing profits are all that matters in most businesses. The lowest common denominator is very, very low. Much lower than Forrest Gump and Rainman. To maximize profits, you want to cater to most people. But most people are stupid, stupid, stupid. P.T. Barn um was right. No one ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the American public.
As long as the evils of capitalism persist, TV, radio, the internet, not to mention software will be stupid, stupid, stupid, just like the people they pander to.
So, what else is new?
