Food From India!

With all the food videos we’ve done lately… are you hungry yet? I know I am. Some of the dishes from other countries sound absolutely delicious. I admit, a few of them have made me shudder… but I still like to keep an open mind. Heck, I’ll try anything once! Here are some of the top foods in India, sent in by a reader.
- Dosa This is a like a very large pancake that has been rolled up. It’s also a little crispier than a pancake and there is potato in it. I don’t really know a better way of describing this.
- Idli This looks like a ball that somebody has stepped on to make it flat. Idli is made primarily with rice. Idli is almost always served with “Sambar”. Sambar is almost like a dip. This is a dish people eat in the south of India, usually for special events.
- Tikka Masala This is a very popular dish throughout the world, so you may have heard of it. It’s basically chunks of chicken marinated in spices and yogurt and baked in a tandoor oven… in a masala. Masala a very spicy sauce! If you are someone who can’t stand food that is spicy, I recommend you do NOT eat this. Sometimes this dish is served on top of rice, other times it’s not. But either way it taste’s very good!
- Tandoori chicken This is chicken marinated in yogurt, seasoned with Tandoori Masala. The chicken is pretty red… but it tastes amazing. In India it is pretty hot, but in other countries they tone down the spiciness so others can eat it as well. Tandoori chicken is also served with rice. You may find this at weddings or other events.

Hi Chris,
Dosa and idli are staple breakfast items in south India. On the other hand, the two chicken dishes are definitely reserved for special occasions and are usually not cooked at home.
Enjoy the food. Theres a lot more to discover.
Cheers

The first two are South Indian staples, and the bottom two Tandoori cooking. and I wouldn’t trust a place to do a good job with both kinds of cooking. It’s always one or the other :)

I believe that it is mostly re-sellers and distributors opening apple stores, not apple themselves.

Chicken Tikka Masala is also my favorite but there are so many different versions of it. Every restaurant I go to, it has a different taste.

I’m glad you mentioned Naan, it’s so good! Finding an Indian place that has good Naan is like finding a Mexican food place with good tortillas, worth every penny!

Ok the idiot who said we eat Idly and Sambar sometimes on birthdays is wrong! We eat Idly and Samhar all the time. Idly is a breakfast food item or a after lunch before dinner food item. Sambhar is a staple we eat it all the time for lunch or breakfast or dinner.

When well done, Indian cooking is some of the best in the world, including Anglo-Indian, which can use beef. Some of the dishes are so hot and so good that I am grinning and crying when I eat them. And Indian cooking is relatively easy to do at home, too.
Oddly enough, I have had a tough time finding a good Indian restaraunt in Atlanta, where I live — back in Canada, pretty much any Indian restaraunt you went into would give you a delicious meal — including one place which had a superb dish with pears in it!
And I agree completely with some of the other commentators — naan bread is almost worth the price of admission itself — I think I could make a meal of a plate of naan bread and some spicy dipping sauce.
The other thing that strikes me as more than passing strange about Indian food is this: based on my limited experience with American [North and South], European, Middle East, and Asian foods, Indian cuisine is the only one which does not go well with any sort of wine. The best I have been able to come up with as a food matching is White Zinfandel, and even that is not all that great as a match, even though it works with most other combinations — Japanese, Chinese, and Thai, in particular.

“… Idli… eat … south of India, usually for special events.”
Somebody’s been misleading you totally ! Idli is staple diet in south India. Its eaten regularly generally for breakfast or for evening snacks.
You can step into any restaurant any time of the day and be pretty assured that you can order either idli/dosa. .

Hey Chris, I would also like to add something to that list. Since, I am Indian I really like this.
Palak Paneer is a delicious, hearty North Indian dish prepared with spinach and Indian cheese. This traditional greens based vegetarian dish is a rich, smooth, creamy curry where paneer cubes are cooked in a onion-tomato-spinach based gravy which is moderately spiced with Indian spices.
this is where i got this little description from it also shows a pic of it
