I am constantly seeing messages either in chat rooms or on social networks from people saying they’re bored. Complaints of boredom make no sense, especially when they’re in relation to something you’re doing online. There are thousands, if not millions, of things to do online to entertain yourself. Here is a list of five ways to be entertained online:
Download a Podcast
Podcasts can be found all over the Web and cover an extremely diverse range of topics from astronomy to zoology. No matter what your passion may be, there is probably a podcast out there you might enjoy spending time watching and/or listening to. Even if you prefer fiction, there is an abundance of content out there that features stories told through audio and often video as well. The most popular method for downloading and subscribing to podcasts is through iTunes. The iTunes Store has an entire section dedicated to this mass of free content.
Watch TV Programs
So, you’re not crazy about any of the podcasts out there, but you do like watching TV? You don’t have to have a television to watch TV programs on the Web. Thanks to services like Hulu and Netflix, you can see many of your favorite shows, and even movies, on an on-demand basis over the Web. If you prefer to purchase episodes to watch on your own time offline, iTunes has a sizable online store where you can purchase episodes à la carte or by the season. Movies can be purchased on the store as well.
Play a Game
Online gaming has become one of the largest entertainment industries in existence, and thanks to direct download services like Steam and Direct2Drive, you don’t even have to leave your home to purchase a video game. All you need to do is purchase the game, download the content, and you’re ready to play. If casual games are more your style, check out the thousands of games hosted as Web apps across the Web.
Listen to Streaming Music
There are thousands of radio stations broadcasting across the Web, as well as services like Pandora and Last.fm that give you access to streaming music in any number of genres and styles. On Pandora and others, you can even mix and match genres and create a rap-death metal station if you want to. No matter what your taste, it’s actually pretty easy to set up and start hearing your favorite music.
Sometimes, you just need to reach out and meet some new people. If you fancy yourself a hermit, you can always participate in the world of social networking without having to leave the comfort of your home. Create a profile, join a few interest groups, and start making new connections. Before you know it, you’ll be spending more time than you’d care to admit checking out the latest posts and making comments of your own. Just try to avoid telling everyone that you’re bored.
