Fifty Windows XP Tips eBook

Ya know that secret thingy I was telling you about? Well, it's not that much of a secret (actually, I don't think it's a secret at all). Anyway, I believe it's well on its way. If you'd like to get 50 Windows XP tips in PDF, CHM, MHT, TXT, PDB, LIT, **and** TR formats for a total of $5 (the price of an Extra Value Meal), then click here. The transaction is only for PayPal people right now, but we hope to have regular CC transactions ready soon. If this is worth doing in the first place, that is. If we don't get a good response from the idea(s), then we'll stop doing them altogether. If we get a great response, then there will be more eBooks to come. There may still be some snags in the documents, but I will personally e-mail you any updates when a truly final version is available. As always, I appreciate your candid feedback. Now you see why I've been so silent lately! The content won't change, mind you - it's the copyright and (minor) formatting crap that may need tweaking.

You rock geek boy

Is this the same 50 XP tips that was up on the Lockergnome website???

Hardly.

That was 50 Windows XP new features.

My bad gentlemen. I've just ordered. :)

Attention XP users. I happened across this link while going through Lockergnomes's web cam page. This person really hates XP and s/he also stated that the link will shutdown your machine. Marc and I were sceptical but sure enough after opening the link his XP machine logged him out. I'm putting this link on here purely for “academic purposes” and assume no responsibility for any problem you may experience. Have a look at the source code for the page and see if you can figure out how its done.

Okay, payed my $5, now what?

I took a look at the source of that page that shuts down XP you put up. ( by right clicking link, “Save target as..” … then renaming to xp_rules.txt ) very interesting code! I wonder if Microsoft knows about this.. very inventive.. although I am not sure what the CLSID 111 11 thingy does…

Whoever that @$$hole is who made the xp shutdown thing, im runnin xp and it doesent work so HAHAHA ya moron. And secondly, xp clearly does not suck and is the best os ever made period!
(the guy who made it probably didnt have the money for xp and is jealous of us xp owning people lol)

I didn't make the code I just found it. It does log me out of XP when I open that page. Any ideas as to why? Or…any idea why your XP system isn't affected. You should send your love to http://www.xtacy.org cause thats were I found it.
BTW I love my XP machine and wouldn't trade it for anything.

why does it log you out?
looking at the source it invokes a java script, calling the three most common places 'logoff.exe' is located.
'c:/windows/system32/logoff.exe',
'c:/winxp/system32/logoff.exe',
'c:/winnt/system32/logoff.exe'
after that, it seems to compare the programName. length using an object command and the Classid, which is a string of numbers that is in this format 8 numbers-4numbers-4numbers-3numbers-12 numbers.
I dont know if this format of numbers is unique to XP allowing it to single out XP from NT or ME or 98….
Im no programing guru or anything .. but thats what I see…

I'm supporting two XP machines… mine runs XP professional, Mary's runs XP home version. I'm not gonna doink around with the shutdown bug thinger, but I wonder if it's mileage varies by XP flavor?

It has to do with a security flaw in XP/IE. The latest updates fix the problem. I tested with a clean install of XP and my notebook with all critical updates applied and the logoff did not occur on the patched machine. I'd have to dig through all of the security bulletins to remember which fix was for this particular flaw.

Furo ,
It logged my machine out, and I have all the security patches installed, I am quite religious about that. So that makes me quite curious…

The flaw it exploits is the usual one of IE allowing improper commands to execute, of which there have been quite a few as Microsoft don't seem to be arsed enough to write a general block but instead do it exploit by exploit. This particular one isn't new and it will be defeated by having your XP install in a non default partition or by being paranoid in terms of what one lets IE do. Installing to something other than a C: drive is a very basic precaution that will catch out some of the lazier exploits, I trust it's in the XP tips. :)
