Favorite Sci-Fi Movies of All Time

Bwana, SC_Thor, SWAT, Wirelesspacket and I had an excellent conversation via Ventrilo the other night, discussing different Sci-Fi movies… what is good, and what is not. It was impossible for us to come up with a concrete “Top 5″ list. There are just too many good ones to pick from! Here is our list of videos that we all agree are excellent:
- The Last StarFighter
- Time Bandits
- Star Wars
- Equilibrium
- Blade Runner
- The Fifth Element
- The Matrix
- Labyrinth
- War of the Worlds
- Tron
- The Navigator
- The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
- The Explorer
- Operation Takedown
What are your favorites, and why? Can YOU actually narrow it down to only five favorites?

OK, Operation Takedown doesn’t seem to be a real movie. At least according to IMDB.
Is ‘The Explorer’ the original 1915 version or the later 1955 version?
Is ‘The Navigator’ actually titled ‘The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey’?
No one liked 2001 A Space Odyssey? Or Spaceballs? Transformers? I, Robot?

I too place The Last Starfighter in my top 10 favorite scifi movies. Every time I see it I regret that a sequel was never made. Maybe because that wonderful Robert Preston died a few years after making the movie. Too bad, as I could envision at least 2 sequels. Too bad.

2001 A Space Odyssey, Forbidden Planet, Jurassic Park, Altered States, The Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner, Alien, The Andromeda Strain, Silent Running, Logan’s Run, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Day the Earth Stood Still, When Worlds Collide, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The War of the Worlds (first version), Frankenstein (even though it’s usually considered a horror movie), and Metropolis. And no, I’m not as old as some of these films.

Short Circuit
2001: A Space Odyssey
Batteries Not INcluded

Dune (2000 version with Sting)
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
Forbidden Planet
Hellboy
I, Robot
Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)
Space Cowboys
Spaceballs
Tron
The War of the Worlds (1953)
Not necessarily in this order.

You guys are obviously a little younger than me. You didn’t even mention such classics as ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ (first SERIOUS SF movie), ‘Forbidden Planet’ (just as big a cinematic FX leap as Starwars), ‘2001, a Space Odyssey’, or even ‘Dune’ or ‘Alien’. These are all milestones in the advancement of SF in movies.

Foul!
You’re mixing SciFi & Fantasy. Would you call the Wizard of Oz SciFi?
Time Bandits and Labyrinth do not belong in the same group as Blade Runner and the Matrix. Hitchhiker’s Guide is more like SpaceBalls.
Also, judging from the list above, you definitely should see Mirror Mask.
And I love The Fifth Element but it needs it’s own category. SciFantasy? SciFan?
Of course, all of this, IMHO

You’ve left out some classics such as “Forbidden Planet”, “The Day the Earth Stood Still” , “Earth Vs the Flying Sausers” , “2001″ and the original “War of the Worlds”. There are many more but all are probably older than most of you guys. Cheers!

2001: A Space Odyssey (never been a film like it)
Star Wars (wins over Empire because it invented that universe)
Alien (ultimate malevolence)
Blade Runner (thoughtful dystopia)
Aliens (as action-packed as the original was slow and creepy)

The classic sci-fi flick that predates all those listed is: The Day The Earth
Stood Still — made in 1951. It has a feeling of plausability without relying on spectacular special effects.

I’ve two favourites- The Flight of the Navigator about a boy who is ‘chosen’ by an AI UFO to help it home through time and space and Time Bandits about a boy who gets caught up in a plot by dwarfs who have stolen a map of the universe from God. Both of them entertaining and give cause to consider the mysteries of time and space- and the Superior Being!

Oh, and K-Pak. Kevin Spacey- is he a nut or an alien? If you start thinking, the list gets longer. And I am not prticularly a Sci-Fi fan!

Two words for you, “Young Buck!” Yes the list does show your youth.
Here’s one no one has mentioned, “Robinson Crusoe on Mars”. I used to love watching this movie as a kid. Sure the special effects are antiquated, but still a decent story, and impossible to find, not even on Netflix.

I can’t believe you missed some of the best movies of all time. Here is my choice:
Forbidden Planet

The original Star Wars Trilogy
Matrix
New movies may be flashier but nothing beats a great story. You can tell a great movie when the story can stand alone.

My Top 5:
Blade Runner: A cult classic that started the whole cyber-punk film genre and dystopian future setting also presenting hard core questions like what makes one human.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Long before Spielberg’s sci-fi disaster War of the Worlds this took everyday average folks and brought them into extraordinary events that made it very believable. Great acting, story and film score.
Tron: Games, evil corporate computer AI, circuit board effects and more computers. True geek sci-fi.
Logan’s Run, Dune, 2001… ok, more then 5 favs.
I have to agree with Chris about Alien/s but although i could never watch the movies ever again i did find the concepts behind the film/s interesting. Take HR Giger’s dark world, that is what really made the first film alive and truly alien. The man really deserved more credit over the years but was screwed all too often. It is these bizzare worlds that make sci-fi so fascinating to watch.
I have to say that Independance Day is sci-fi but Sci-Fi Blockbuster to be fair here. It had too many settings that say sci-fi even though it takes place in modern day. Aliens, invasion, alien high-tech and telepathy. Blockbusters can fall under many genres like techno-thrillers, action/adventure and horror.

At last. This video was blasphemous until you put “First Contact at the top”, well done! A Sci-Fi discussion without a word for any trek? They all need to go back to Sci-Fi school, with their heads hung in shame while Warf escorts them to their classes! :D

There were no aliens “popping” out of anyone in the original War Of The Worlds. Are you confusing this film with the original “Body Snatchers”? In that movie, “pods” were put close to a sleeping person, and a body would “pop” out and become that person. Gene Barry was in the version of War of the Worlds that I was referring to. It has great flying saucers and I love the scene when an alien ship crashes into an old farm house.

Omega man, Soylent Green, Blade runner.
I have a question? Does anyone remember an early version of Colossus: The Forbin Project with Gregory Peck? Or was it another actor?
As Marcus stated, it’s a great movie if it stand on the Story alone without all the glitz and graphic voilence. With New Movies you no longer have to use your emagination. What a Loss….
