Fantastic Freeware Finds
Generally speaking, I like saving the cool stuff for Lockergnome's channels, but I found a couple of nifty tools today that I just couldn't wait to share with the world. First, a Command Prompt Explorer Bar (via Julien Cheyssial). Second, PhotoFiltre – one of the best free image editors I've ever found (courtesy of alt.comp.freeware). If it weren't for RSS, I wouldn't have discovered either one of 'em. Jason suggested that we start running a top ten “new feeds” list in our newsletters, so expect to see the first one next week. Oh yeah, I also learned about Peter Hirschberg's classics through my news aggregator. Still think I'm crazy? Good.

I'm checking out the photofiltre website right now. I wish I knew more french. I'll take your word for it and download it. :) I'm always on the lookout for good free photo editors. Thanks for sharing!

I seem to remember that the Command Prompt bar was given a rave review in Tech Specialist some time ago.

Thanks for the heads up on that graphics program. It seems great for doing quick edits especially for web work. While I still like Irfanview better for everyday use and Fireworks of Photoshop has more features for serious work this program excels in the area of filtering. Another big plus – the lasso tool seems to have a much better interaction with the mouse than other programs. It feels more natural for some reason. I've definitely added this program to my graphics “toolbox”.

For image editors I say that there is nothing as good as photoshop, even though its like $600 (which is why 90% of people that own it have pirated it, stupid adobe could make alot more money selling it for $100). For viewers I think irfanview is the best, and it has a batch coverter to convert formats.

PhotoFiltre RULES! Perfect for doing Photoshop-type mods without Photoshop…but then again, what else would I expect from the man who has helped me tweak my machine for 5 years? Thanks for everything, Chris…lots of love!

It's too bad you need the .net framework to use the 'Command Prompt Explorer Bar'. Looks looked like a neat little utility.

I was wondering about the Peets link like RiverGirl. At one point it linked to, out of all places, Starbucks! I liked the Commant Brompt Extortion Bar. I had no idea how much power RSS can be.

Yeah, the CP bar was reviewed at least a year ago by Furo when he did the TS (btw, what does he do now since he's part of staff?). I asked about his Peet's link in his previous entry but maybe Starbucks owns Peet's now.

The “Pirillo Special” packs probably didn't sell and Peets wouldn't stock them anymore, so our gnomish friend cracked the sads and took down the link.
