Multiple Monitors are great for productivity. All you have to do is use them to know that. Of course there are a lot of small minded skeptics out there.

[...] I strongly believe (and it has been shown to be true) that one of the best ways to increase someone’s productivity is to increase the size of their computer monitor. The 17″ monitor I am currently looking at takes up less than a third of my range of sight. Admittedly pseudo-science, the eye has been determined to have an equivalent resolution of 81 megapixels. To couple that with another bit of pseudoscience, I was once told by one of my OPIM professors that the human brain’s memory could be measured in gigabytes. When comparing the ratio of our visual ability to the output of the monitors we regularly look at to the ratio of our memory capacity to the amount of storage space/information we have available, it is clear that we have an excess amount of information available and a limited amount of viewing “capacity.” Hence, there is a lot of room for progress to be made in enhancing the way we view information a computer.
Hi Chris,

Although I agree with most of the things you say I have to disagree with you on your statement that when you pay more for an Apple LCD you are just paying for the brand. I own a Dell LCD and they’re amazing but Apple displays have better color accuracy and saturation. There’s a reason other than the brand that Apple LCDs are industry standard in new media design, film and video that justifies the hefty price tag.

I would agree that most consumers should stick with Dell as their monitor of choice but when it comes to creative professionals Apple is usually their LCD of choice and they sometimes settle for Dell because of the price. However, I would be inclined to say that the difference in price might not be worth the small improvement in image quality hence the reason I do not personally own an Apple LCD. Apple comes first with Dell as a close second. I don’t like the viewing areas on HP LCDs. They just seem strange to me. This is just my opinion of course.

I love the site. Keep up the good work!

Love your pair of 30's. I'm really happy with my duo of Dell 24". Which are quite the per-pixel bargain now at $669. For the cost of the apple '30, you can have three dell '24 (if you buy them on sale). A minor quibble about a comment on your video stream, you say that someone pays about $100 more for the Apple logo . . . the current price delta is three-times that - $300. That's alot for a logo, especially when the monitors have the exact same displays.

I've been using a dual monitor set up for web design/dev. for 5 years and would not go back. One monitor is even hooked up to a KVM so I can switch back and forth to my in house web server - testing only - on the left-hand monitor. I'm frequently in the business of translating some other document to a web page or form. Being able to put them next to each other is invaluable.
