I rolled out and announced “WicketPixie” a few weeks ago, and was (quite honestly) hoping to have a few more fixes in place before releasing v1.0 to the galaxy. Despite a handful of hiccups, you’re welcome to download and try WicketPixie on your own WordPress blog – provided you have one, or even know what to do with a theme in the first place. All Lockergnome bloggers will have the latest / most optimized version of WicketPixie:

I cannot provide support for this particular theme – I don’t have a support team, but am welcoming any kind of community involvement for helping others with its deployment elsewhere. Garry Conn created this nice installation / configuration guide, too. Since this theme is free, I’d suggest making a donation before emailing me with support questions (which I may or may not have the ability to answer).

The following notes assume you’re using WordPress 2.5.1 (or a similar version) and PHP5. Please read this entire post before installing the theme and emailing me questions I’ve already taken the time to answer / address. Please? You might also watch Andrew’s WicketPixie Installation Videocast.

  • You’ll definitely want to edit the home.php file to add your OWN stuff to it – and if you can’t figure it out, you should be able to safely remove home.php and WordPress should fall back to the default (generic) index.php for your home page. Unfortunately, there’s no other way of modifying the home page template at this point.
  • You’ll probably want to tweak the CSS files to suit your tastes. I have made quite a few minor modifications to it for my own use on my own blog.
  • The sidebar widgets are placed as such.
  • To add your social sources to WicketPixie (which you can see in my sidebar and on my “Social Me” page), make sure the WicketPixie Source Manager plugin is enabled on your plugins management page. Once that is done, you should find the “WicketPixie Sources” option in your blog’s “Manage” area. This is where you can add your social accounts at will.
  • Your sources will show up in your blog only after you add the “WicketPixie: My Profiles” widget to one of your sidebars (configured in your regular ol’ WordPress Widgets settings page). If you would like your own “Social Me” / lifestream page, you need only create a new WordPress page and use the “Activity Stream” template for it.
  • You can have your own news aggregator page with WicketPixie, if you add your favorite sites and feeds to “WicketPixie Faves” found under the WordPress Manage menu. Once your feeds have been added, you will need to create a new Page and use the “Faves” template for it. If you wish to remove the default feeds, you will likely have to edit the faves.php template by hand.
  • If you run into random “not writable” errors, make sure the directory in question is writable – which should go without saying, but if you need assistance with this I would suggest contacting your system administrator rather than trying to fix something yourself.
  • They’re not necessary, but I strongly recommend installing the following WordPress plugins: WPtouch, FirstRSS, Chunk URLs, and Admin Drop Down Menu.
  • If you can, please keep the default credit links in place – I’d really appreciate it.
  • You may receive a “Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in activity.php on line 41.” Since I didn’t program the app, I have no idea what’s wrong or how to fix it.
  • If you want more Related Links options, you can move that plugin out of the wicketpixie plugin directory, and into your regular ol’ WordPress plugins directory. If you’re not sure how to do it, please leave well enough alone.
  • It’s simple to change colors, fonts, and the background image for WicketPixie by looking in the Design section of WordPress – “WicketPixie Options” will be found under there.
  • There is a “Share” menu in the top bar that’s hidden by default. You can edit the property for #topbar-share in the screen.css file – change “display: none” to “display: inline” to make it show up. Then, edit the appropriate section in header.php – it’s ready for the ShareThis code, too!
  • If you receive a “Fatal error: Class ‘SourceUpdate’ not found in wp-content/themes/wicketpixie/header.php on line 85″ error, it’s because you forgot to enable the WicketPixie Source Manager plugin in WordPress.
  • If you receive the “Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in wp-content/plugins/sourcemanager.php on line 19″ error, it’s because your Web host needs to be using PHP5.
  • The logo at the top of the theme is your gravatar, and you should already know how to make your own gravatar by now (free).

You can read more about this theme or watch the screencast for more information or guidance.

Oh, and have you joined the community on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube yet?

As many of you may notice this blog is running theWicketPixieWordpress “super-theme”. WicketPixie is a Chris Pirillo and Lockergnome product. This is a very cool and interactive theme. And with all the programming that had to be done, it all came at a cost. For WicketPixie 2.x to be relased Chris is asking

After jumping around between a few different themes and working on creating my own I found theWicketPixietheme from Chris Pirillo a fellow blogger/lifecaster who commissioned the creation of this wonderful theme.  While the theme look basic the beauty is in the back end where it pull together all of my social pages.

Or the 500 Internal Server Error gave up on me and let me access my site again at that very moment when I refreshed the page.  Oh, and I modified the site for PHP5.  Maybe that fixed it.  I’ll know soon enough. Then, I downloaded and installedWicketPixie, a WordPress theme designed by Chris Pirillo of Lockergnome, an e-newsletter writer and blogger that I’ve been following for about ten years now, more or less.  And I really like it.  And I would be using it right this minute, but the menu bar at

I really like what Matt Brett pulled together for Chris, but the Social Me and Faves pages are a couple examples of why I think a new CMS structure is in order. There should be a way to

Great post!

\wp-content\themes\wicketpixie\home.php
edit it to show your youtube videos, there are two section by default one that appears to be a side bar on the home page and one in the center section. Just login to your youtube channel, create a custom player , then past the resulting code into home.php, you need only provide the src= and movie = info, not the entire enbed statement.

faves! edit wp-content\themes\wicketpixie\app\faves.php as it has by default Chris favs in it so clicking delete will not work! the default favs come back. I think this was left in so chris doesnt worry about deleting his stuff. I am working on mod all ready to all you as an admin to remove them all or add them back e.g default.

Hi Chris!

I am very excited for you and the WordPress community with the release of your new WordPress theme. With the amount of time and energy you have put into this, I am very confident that this is a very solid working WordPress theme that has been coded to perfection. Thanks so much for your contribution.

anyone else getting a plugin error… for the Source Manager?

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /nfs/c02/h06/mnt/42832/domains/gregwilker.org/html/wp-content/plugins/sourcemanager.php on line 19

Line 41: replace
foreach( $results[$page - 1] as $stream )
with
foreach( (array)$results[$page - 1] as $stream )

The theme is very odly packaged. The /upload subdirectory is not needed, and should be created by the theme instead. The plugins should be included in the theme directory instead of the plugins directory.

Last thing: the FlexURL stuff is totally deprecated, since this is the regular behavior of WP since long (ie http://planetozh.com/blog/about-plugins/ is redirected to http://planetozh.com/blog/2008/06/about-plugins-and-roles-in-wordpress-mu/ and I’m not using any plugins for this)

@Greg Wilker I am having the same problem

Bummer :( I was really looking forward to this, but I can’t get it to work at ALL. Plugins dont show or create errors, and my index/home page is completely empty. Only the background image shows up.

If anyone can contact me and tell me what might be the problem, I’d be so grateful.

hi chris, do you know where to get the WordPress Theme before the one you have now

@Ben I figured out what our problem is… we are using php4 and the plugin requires php5

Is anybody getting the error:

WordPress database error: [Table 'ethanbaker_wordpress.wp_wik_sources' doesn't exist]
SELECT * FROM wp_wik_sources

email me If you know how it can be fixed

@Greg Wilker, I am getting the same error

If you are getting a “Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’” when trying to enbale the Source Manager plugin, make sure that you are using PHP5, and NOT PHP4. It took me a while to figure out the cause and it was because I had PHP4 set as the default on my hosting account. As soon as I changed to PHP5, it worked.

Fatal error: Class ‘SourceUpdate’ not found in /home/collide/public_html/wp-content/themes/wicketpixie/header.php on line 85

Nevermind I didn’t enable the plugin.

@Greg Wilker & @ Ben I’m also having the same error…

Awesome release, Chris.

@Jeff Norris I’ll keep checking back for your fix.

Free & Premium … that’s something I don’t see everyday ;)

What do you delete in faves.php? I can’t seem to figure that one out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nevermind, I found it. :) I should’ve read the directions more closely in the previous posts. :)

I got this error and was able to get past it, Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /nfs/c02/h06/mnt/42832/domains/gregwilker.org/html/wp-content/plugins/sourcemanager.php on line 19.

It was because my host by default was using PHP 4, I switched on PHP 5 and it works great. Dont know if it will help anyone but just in case.

Download is successful to a flash drive on a different machine. I unarchived it just in case my machine still doesn’t like it. Will probably do more pitiable whining the next time I get stuck…

I may have figured out how to get rid of Chris’ favorites. This may completely break everything, although it seems to be working for me so far.
First, I opened the file at wordpressfolder/wp-content/themes/wicketpixie/app/faves.php where wordpressfolder would be the folder on your server where WP lives. Then, I commented out lines 30 – 38 of faves.php. These are the lines that hard code his sites to the faves array. Once I saved the file I was able to remove the sites from the WicketPixie Faves page under the Manage menu in WP. Jeff’s solution will surely be cleaner than this, but this may be a temporary solution for anyone needing one.

Problem:

Hey chris this theme is cool, but has some major issues. It wont even load on my site and I cant get the plugin to load. Furthermore, the bug on the menu where one side is rounded and the other side is square is still there, it looks really bad…With some bug fixes it could be a nice theme though

Fred, thanks for that tip. That might solve my problem, too.

I’m slowly trying to get this to work! Anyone know how to replace the YouTube video section and the Ustream section on home.php? I get how to delete it but its not as obvious to me how I can replace the YouTube portion?

I’m officially bummed. I can’t use your theme Chris, because I keep getting the error messages you mentioned needing “php5″ for. My webhost doesnt use it.

Have fun, all of you who can. It’s a really nice theme. Hopefully something can be done for those of us with webhosts not using php5.

Hey Chris, great theme. I have installed it and am in the process of tweaking it.

I decided to contribute $10 to the cause, this is my first “donation” towards a project and it makes me feel good to do it.

Keep up the great work.

Hi,

This is a great theme chris :)

I do have 1 problem though, i have applied this theme to my blog and it works great on safari and firefox but for some reason on internet explorer it does not work properly, the menu bar with the different tabs is over to the right, if anybody knows how to fix it could you contact me at sean@leateds.com or just here on this blog post.

Thanks

WicketPixie is up and running at Crossword Bebop! I had to toggle DreamHost to PHP5, but after that, everything worked automagically. As a WordPress n00b, I had a hard time finding home.php to edit it, but once I did, I was able to get my Flickr photos up.

I have a YouTube account with some videos, but I couldn’t find an equivalent page for my videos, equivalent to the page mentioned in your home.php. I’ll investigate that further tomorrow.

Haven’t started working with WicketPixie Sources and WicketPixie Faves yet, but it’s on my to-do list. I’m feeling pretty good right now with having successfully migrated to WordPress and WicketPixie.

I’m having the same trouble, Jayme. How do we change the front page YouTube to show our OWN account? Meanwhile I am featuring Chris’ vids on my page. LOL!

Also, why am I only able to add 4 sources?? I can’t seem to add anymore than 4. I’m sure if I hunt around, I’ll find some tweak, but I’d love some wisdom from someone here..

I love this theme though and am determined to get it to work. :)

Ok I figured out the YouTube question I had. I read the other comments. Thanks guys! :) Now my one big issue remains.. why can’t I add more than 4 sources? That has me completely stumped. I go to manage and the source plug-in settings, and I was able to add 4 sources just fine. Starting with the 5th one, it just stopped letting me add anything. I deleted the table, started over, same thing. Anyone else having this problem?

Wow quite a amazing theme… it works great on my blog :)

http://blog.kteck.ca/

Damn, I’m going to have to edit the hell out of it, since I don’t have Ustream and such.

Thanks chris for this wonderfull theme! I have it working perfectly just some little tweaks here and there left to do. Other than that its a superb theme!

Whooohoo! Thanks, Chris. :)

I have come up with a small fix for this theme for internet explorer 7, in IE7 the navigation bars are not aligned properly, i have made a temporary fix for this which aligns the bars into the right places the only thing different is that the top menu bar moves with the page when scrolling instead of it being in a fixed location.

All you have to do is download this css file and replace it with the original one found in the css folder of wicketpixie

http://www.leateds.com/ie7.css

Hope it helps!

So, I’m trying to get 2 things to show up and work with this theme. The first thing is I have 3 twitter accounts I want to display in the top news Source display. So far it only shows the first Feed not the other two.

2nd Twitter and Plurk’s Favicon haven’t yet been able to display in the activity page where as flickr’s favicon has.

I don’t know how to fix this. *note to chris you should create a forum for us to all come together and help each other doing our own tech support.

Ok, so a couple things I’m having trouble with. First of all I keep getting this:

Warning: thecrimsonm.com/blog///wp-content/uploads/activity//d2388560ee265938187e2422b23f6b56.spc is not writeable in thecrimsonm.com/blog/wp-content/plugins/simplepie.php on line 1623

I’ve enabled permissions for it to read, write, and execute (run) all the files in the wp-content folder, so I don’t get why it’s not working.

Also, I’m a twitter user like Chris and I can’t seem to be able to get it so that my latest tweet shows up at the top right of the header area (just to the right of my blog title).

If anyone can help me with either of these matters, please e-mail me: mike.boomhouer@gmail.com

I’ve got the theme up and running! Yay!

One problem though – I can’t get ‘Faves’ to work at all.

I’ve got a few entries already put in (as well as the ones that come with it already), created the ‘Faves’ page using the template, but…..

The ‘Faves’ page is blank. Nothing there.

Can anyone offer any guidance?

kPod- if you check this.. just delete the “home.php” and you’re left with generic “index.php”. That should take care of it.

Can anyone please help me? For some reason, the “social me” (activities stream) is frozen on June 10. I KNOW I’ve updated Twitter, my blog, etc.. since then. Anyone else having any issues with that??

I’m getting these two errors when I try to view my “Social-Me” page.

Great theme I really like it. I plan on donating as well.

However, Firefox 3 there are major scrolling issues. I am working to whether confirm it is souly a firefox 3 problem or not. Has anyone else noticed the issue? Since firefox is one of the most used browsers this is potentially a decent sized issue, no? Well that depends on the amount of people using firefox 3.

From what I know right now. Firefox 3 is the only browser to have the scrolling lag issue. It happens on both XP and Vista.

This is the only blog template or website that I know of that has the issue.

After an hour and a half of diagnosing, I discovered that there is a coding issue with this theme. If a user has their WordPress installation setup so that only Registered and logged in users can comment, this will cause the themes footer/sidebar to break. I believe it’s because the theme was not coded to handle this user case scenario. The work around is to have an open comment system but then again, not everyone wants that. Thought I would pass this bug report on to you.

Aside from the above, I would like to mention that Twitter updates do not show in the bubble unless you change the font color. (At least for me)

Also, does anyone have any idea how to get the avatar to show next to the text bubble? I’ve manually fixed it in a couple of spaces, but it calls every time you go to a new page, and that is a pain.

Hi, Having a problem displaying all the feed icons, and twitter avatar, nothing shows up. Can anyone help?

Thanks, Chirs!~ It is really a great theme, and I have given it a try. But, I keep getting message says “Table not installed”. I have checked mySQL and I only saw these two tables being created.

msblog_wik_faves
msblog_wik_source_types

I am using PHP5 with my blog. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem?

thanks!~

I can’t seem to get my gravatar to show up on the pages of WicketPixie. Do I have to insert some type of code to get it to work or would a few edits work? I opened up the home.php file and I didn’t see anything in there to add my gravatar. Also I get this error “Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/whereimat/public_html/wp-content/themes/wicketpixie/widgets/twitter.php on line 7″. How can I fix this? I searched Google with no results.

I think I can help anyone who left a comment about trouble with the theme. You can email me at singer.jordan@gmail.com. My blog using the WicketPixie theme is at http://www.jordan480.com and I might be able to help you.

I installed this (great) theme, but if I view the page in IE (7) the menu-bar is messed up.. In any other browser it looks great, but since half of my visitors use IE 7 I would really like to know if there was any way to fix this.

The error I see in IE is on line 34 (IE sees the same error on your page, but it doesn’t look messed up)

I also used someones edited css to make the top bar to always be on the top of the page and not follow down on the page (less buggy page)

@Jordan Singer – Thank you very much for your help with the avatar in this theme.

Great theme Chris! Have been looking for a clean and polished layout. I had some major problems with the social feed etc. and had to disable some parts (as my server provider do not allow curl_exec, but finally everything is up and running. Haven’t tested yet with IE7 (maybe better not to ;) And thanks to LudoTheGreat for the FF3 navbar fix.

Cool WP theme Chris… its that good Im using it myself :)

I’ve been having a few problems with this if anyone can help me…

First, when I go into an individual post, only part of the white background shows…

Second, on my sources, all but the flickr icon are missing and replaced with the words of the website…

Finally, my sidebar doesn’t show up in individual posts, just in the pages or homepage.

Thanks for any and all help!

Cool Theme.. I’ll use it at my blog. Thanks chris!

The link is broken, or not there at all. It’s nowhere in the source, or am I just missing something?

[...] off, let me thank Chris Pirillo for his great WordPress application WicketPixie v1.0.1 - calling it theme doesn’t really do justice to what he has accomplished [...]

I’ve added the ability to change the horizontal and vertical position of the body’s background image from within the WicketPixie options in the WordPress back end to the theme on my site.

Not a big deal, but important to me :-)

You’ll find a detailed description at http://juanromero.ch/2008/07/26/wicketpixie-v101-background-position-patch/

The file downloads as a .html file, not .zip for some reason.

PHP 5.2.1 is running on my server and I still get the following when it attempt to activate the WicketPixie Source Manager:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /home/digit/public_html/wp-content/plugins/sourcemanager.php on line 19

I CHOMOD the sourcemanager.php file to 777 and I get the same thing. I am also running the latest version of WordPress.

Any ideas?

I love the theme.

Several Issues with the theme:

1. top bar and menu bar fail to render right in IE. Turns the theme into anything but usable in IE.

2. Theme breaks if you care to use disqus/intense debate as opposed to wordpress’s built in comment system. (picture of the issue here: http://tinyurl.com/58dr23)

While the theme looks nice, it seems rather subpar underneath, and seeing as how your theme works fine in IE, its apparent you know about the issue and fail to provide a fix to it. I’m hesitate to recommend this theme to anyone without the ability to fix these errors. You’ve labeled this premium theme, yet I’ve seen both better performance, and support from free templates.

Great theme and great help here guys.

Does anyone know how to remove the gray borders that that surround images that I might appear in my blogs?

Grateful in advance.

Ron

I’m having issues with this theme. I have added two sources but when I try and add a 3rd it will not save however; the screen says, “source saved.” wtf? all i know is… if i ever decide to release a theme – i’m going to make sure it’s bug free. thanks chris.

“You can find WicketPixie, and a marginal amount of help on chris’s blog.”

I see no information addressing my question about removing or changing the colors on Chris’ blog. I must assume that either you can’t modify this setting or no one knows the answer.

I am really digging this theme. I had to contact 1&1 so I could run PHP5 and I’m not using the HOME.PHP file, but I like this a lot.

The only problem I seem to having (other than my gravatar not showing near my tweet atop the page) is that WicketPixie Sources isn’t populated (under Manage in the backend). I see the “You don’t have any sources, why not add some?” and “Table not installed. You should go ahead and run the installer.”, but nothing happens when I click Install Sources. Not sure what’s up with that, but I’m going through the comments and surfing for help. I guess it’s supposed to look like this: http://flickr.com/photos/mattbrett/2503444807/in/photostream/

Thanks for this Chris, Matt, and Chris.

I’ve added the ability to change the horizontal and vertical position of the body’s background image from within the WicketPixie options in the WordPress back end to the theme on my site.

For all those with problems with their sources showing up, this may help:

My sources stopped showing up once saved after 1 or 2 were there. They only showed up if you change the ‘Profile Feed URL’ to an actual URL. After close inspection, changing this in /wp-content/plugins/sourcemanager.php seems to work and hopefully doesn’t break anything, it hasn’t yet on mine:

In sourcemanager.php, change:

if( !$wpdb->get_var( “SELECT id FROM $table WHERE feed_url = ‘” . $args['url'] . “‘” ) )

which is a few lines down from: public function add( $_REQUEST )

to:

if( $wpdb->get_var( “SELECT id FROM $table WHERE feed_url = ‘” . $args['url'] . “‘” ) )

Edit: Eventually, it has now stopped letting sources being added but I could be close.

Hey folks,

Wondering if anyone else encountered an issue with the time stamp on the activity stream being off by a few hours. Mine is displaying 2 hours off. Instead of posting at 6:04 pm it says 4:04 pm. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
AV

I like this theme a lot, but its so bug ridden… :(

These are the problems I am having:

1. Tweets don’t show up on the balloon on top nor the twitter tools plugin.

2. If trying to use the excerpt reloaded plugin or limit post plugin, the theme just breaks. So I can only show 1 post per page, because none other seem to fit.

3. Posts only show one per publish
4. Social Me is not working for me either, dunno if I am doing something wrong.
5. Various CSS issues.

I am grateful Chris moved on and made this a free theme, but please don’t call it premium. A Premium theme you expect it to have some sort of support, some sort of it being less buggy.

A suggestion I have is for chris to install bbpress and make an open forum for this theme so we can at least organize the problems and find solutions. That is the best support you can offer, because you don’t see yourself posting in your comments (I dont blame you, you must have a shitload of work). I appreciate you made the theme free, and at first I was going to donate some money, but I don’t know if I cannot get it to work for my own purposes.

Can someone help me with those issues?

Thanks!

Badr

How do you remove all the videos ect?

Nice work on this, but I just feel it is too complicated.

I’m getting this error in the Twitter bubble at the top of the page, and I haven’t been able to find any documentation on it:

Warning: file_get_contents(http:) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/…/wp-content/plugins/simplepie.php on line 6716
No source configured.

I know it’s a Simplepie problem as well, though I can’t figure out how to fix it…but before this mysterious error, I was getting the “No source configured” error all the time, even though my Twitter feed was working fine and Twitter wasn’t down at the time.

PLEASE start a forum for support of this theme! If I can’t find a place to ask and peruse questions about how to fix the bugs, I’ll just have to go with a different theme…

Just found this theme and wanted to send thanks for creating it AND making it freely available!!!

I used the ‘Delete Sources Table’ to clean out my sources and now I can’t use the ‘Manage my Sources’ interface to add new sources. I have figured out how to add sources manually via MySQL and php-hacking, however it is a bit of a painful process… The interface allows me to modify sources I’ve added manually, but I can’t seem to figure out why adding new sources is not working. Has anyone run into a similar problem?

I found it dont worry ;)

I now need help with another thing, how do I add more links to the top bar, I wanted to add like a log in and log out link, and a link to my forum.
If you don’t know what I mean, I mean the bar at the top that chris also has, the one with subscribe, help, forum, community and geeks.
Help would be much appreciated :)

as i knew about the popular theme wicketpixie, i used it for a very long time, but many of the updates have came out and not the updates i wanted to be. these are the bugs i wanted to report since the bug tracker is down.

2. the pages bar does not stretch to its original position when the resolution is less than 1024×768.
