Does Your Computer Have a Name?

I know that many people name their computers and notebooks. For instance, Kat admits that her primary machine is named ‘Pegasus’. Her old Dell is called ‘Excelsior’, and her Mac Mini is named ‘Apollo’. I asked several others what they may or may not call their machines. Take a look at what they had to say.

There are several names I scream at my PC – Mark VandenBerg

I have two PC’s…Mulder & Scully. – Duarte

Babcia’s Computer…my grandmother in Poland bought it for me when I started college. Has a lot of sentimental value to me. – Mattie Kenny

No. I got put off for a while when all my friends would creepily name all their PCs and pocket devices after various anime characters. Yes, they would even kiss them :¬( I have been reconsidering naming a future PC I’m planning on buying though. Something like Grave Mind or Mental Ray. – CannonGod

Spinntop, Hey Mr. DJ & Obelisk. At least that’s what they’re named on the network. – Bradley McSpinn

I call my pc Maverick. – K Welch

I’ve named our PCs after anime characters before. I’ve also named them after Temari patterns (usually flowers in Japanese like "kiku" for "chrysanthemum"), and words that I like in Japanese (like "kawaii" meaning "extremely cute"). Most recently I just started naming them after Aikido techniques ("ikkyo" and "nikkyo": "first technique" and "second technique", for instance). Japanese is fun because it makes everything sound cool. – Lindsay Donaghe

Lappy, like Strong Bad’s. We got them at the same time. :) – Cyndy

The router’s hostname is "imladris" so I name my computers after Lord of the Rings characters. The Powerbook is frodo. The MacBook Pro is gimli. The PS3, if I could give it a name, would be sauron. ;) – James Williams (willia4)

my laptop is named raistlin, my other laptop is flyingsquirrel – Jason Shultz

It’s O-S-C-A-R. oh, wait, that’s my bologna. … – Andre Maltais

I have a Mac Mini as a server near the TV. It’s called Colossus. Our linux server near the router is Titan. The Windows box is called Banshee. My MacBook Pro is Dragonstalker (yeah, corny) – Glenn Batuyong

servers: stewie, kramer, & papabear, computer: pimpdaddy – Justin Korn

There is no mini, only Zuul. (my apple mini media machine – the only named computer) – Jennifer Dittrich

Yes, iMac and Macbook Pro – ☛ Adam Helweh ☚

I have Chris-PC, Eee-Bert, Bitch basement, My PocketPC is Hymie and MonsterServer – Christopher Welle

all my pc’s are named after transformers and my drive volumes/shares are named after muppets. – alphaxion

I don’t name the machine but I do name my hard drive partitions. My main Mac partition is Masamune while the PC Bootcamp partition is Muramasa. – saeba

Mine’s called Bert. – Kol Tregaskes

Holmes – Rodfather

It’s called "Dicker" (Chubby)´. – ※Fu※

My computer doesn’t have a name, but each seperate harddisc does, just like the memorycards of my cellphones & mediaplayers. Zijperspace, zijperspees, minispace, microspace, wederspace, gigaspace, etc… Anyway, plenty of space. – Ton Zijp

They are all named Nunya – Josh Haley

Yep. Athena. – Steven "Joe" Perez

tdonaghexplt – sexy – Tad – the Meme Maker

RMLK223 work computer. – Caroline

Of course yes! Everyone of my computers did. This laptop is named Salmón – Andrés Meza

no, but my network devices do. Fry and Leela are the two networked hard drives, and the router/ wifi devices are Zoidberg and Bender – Duncan Riley

Nomad , Ohmballa and Lilbit..The router is “internet central”

I call my computer “Mainframe” after the “System” in the animated cartoon reboot, which I watched as a kid.

[...] Does Your Computer Have a Name? [...]

I’ve traditionally named machines after Disney characters… Mostly because I’m a Dinsey fan and there is such a WIDE range of options there.

The three in the house right now are Abu (My laptop), Ariel (My wife’s desktop) and Rafiki (The HTPC). I’m in the middle of building a media server for Rafiki to pull from, it’s name will be Mufasa. Since iPods/iPhones need names, too: we have my iPhone (Iago), my wife’s Touch (Sebastian) and her Nano (Flounder).

Using the movies as a grouping method works pretty well. Things my wife predominantly uses are named around The Little Mermaid, I’ve got Aladdin and the Media stuff is The Lion King.

My XP workstation is called “Ice Station Zebra.”
The Macbook Pro is called “Kyoto.”
The rotten little wireless Mighty Mouse is called every name in the book.

off course it has a name; Arthur-Dent
(my hd’s are called Ford, Prefect, Eddie and Marvin ;) )

… and yes, the answer is 42!

…and at my place of work, all servers are named:
* Windows servers with animal names
* HPUX servers with names of norse gods (greek and roman gods for the cluster servers)
* Linux servers either with names of Asterix-characters (test environment or names of famous scientists (production)
* VMWare ESX hosts by famous philosophers

I named my iPod Shuffle Naru (who’s been sold here recently) and my Macbook is named Haruna, I’m going to need to come up with a name for the 8gig nano I’m going to get though.

I call my desktop. Opus.

I name my devices after DHARMA stations. The router is named Pearl, the PC is named Swan, the iPhone is Flame and the iPod touch is Orchid.

I named the computers in my home network after “Looney Toons” characters.

Really? None of my computers has ever had a name.

Macbook AIR’s name is Swordfish, named after the movie.
Old Mac Powerbook named Seawolf.
Dell machine is named Mako
iMac is named Guppy.

Although thinking about it, I should flip the names of the Dell and iMac. hahaha

My computers are named after characters from the Muppets and Sesame Street….
Swedish Chef – iMac
Beaker – White MacBook
Oscar – HP Vista Home Basic Laptop
Animal – HP XP Pro Laptop
Miss Piggy – HP Windows Server 2003
Kermit – IBM Thinkpad T22

Yes – ‘R2′

I haven’t named my computer since the old Mac OS 9 days and when I switched to Windows XP I realized I wasn’t really naming my computer as much as it was my hard drive. And that hard drive and it’s descendants have had the name “Ultra Magnus” ever since. I did have one named “Optimus Prime” for a while.

mine is named internet-junkie

I am so busted on this. I not only name my computers, but I name all the external harddrives. I even put their names on them with a labelmaker.

MacBook – Athena (dearly departed laptops Princess and Princess II), Mac Mini – Tinkerbell, Three PC CPUs – Endora, Elphie, Glinda, Five external drives – Thoth, Boann, The Dagda, Crown, and Bast.

The old Toshiba laptop is called Danny and the massive 20″ HP HDX notebook is called Centaur.

I can’t name them ’cause I usally need to know how big the drive is or what OS that PC is running, so it always has been like: “AMD-WXP”, “Intel_Fedora” “603e-9″ for the PCs and “Music-56.7″ “Movies-78.2″ etc. for the drives.-

I don’t give my computer a name

My HP laptop’s name is Houston, and my Medion Laptop’s name is Manchester. The computer downstairs is named Oscar, and the servers name is….. Server. I think i have to find a name for it…..

Big Blue…Yeah, it’s big, it’s bad & it’s BLUE.

Since I succumbed to the cult of Mac and bought mac, I started naming my macs after cult leaders. Mary Baker Eddy, Sai Baba, Enoch Bowen, L. Ron Hubbard, George Roden…

My home network is HalloweenTown. My computers are named:
jack_skellington, pumpkin_king, ragdoll_sally, ghostdog_zero and dr_finkelstein.

Well, I never thought to do that… Guess I will name mine THOR

Gaming Desktop PC: Hard-Kore
Multimedia Laptop I bought from akhiabara (japan) for my soon to be wife: Kazumi

I’ve named my Dell XPS laptop “Promethias”.

My wife is from the Philippines, so my computers are named after Philippine islands. Boracay, Luzon etc.

My Dell M90 Workbook is called Inquisitor. Other PC’s are Helios, Valhalla, and Titan

I don’t have names for my computers. I just refer to them by their brand model or processor architecture (Inspiron, Pentium 3,…). I find no need to give my PCs a name.

Einstein, Zweistein, Dreistein etc , in the sequence in which they were purchased. This laptop is called Siebzehnstein :-/

My computer’s names are James (my old windows box, Captain Slow (if you watch top gear, you’ll understand)),
Billie (my macbook’s name (from the hot Doctor Who Actor, not the MJ song))
and my mac mini media center is called… i call it Apple TV, really.

My computer is named BARF

I think it is sick and needs a replacement mother brd and ram plus the C: drive won’t boot it reports No NTLDR so i boot onto the CD and jump to the C:\ drive. to run winXP on the C:\ drive. It’s a work around using a quirk (twist) in the software.

Barbara

My hp computer: New_com2004
My Win Xp laptop: XP-laptop
My Toshiba Laptop: Toshiba-Laptop
My old Win 98: motherboard-int

My computer is called “XPERIENCE” becuase its an experience every time I log in, i never know whats going to happen next. Also every time i use my comp, its always a blast becuase i know i am going to do something fun and exciting and useful for school and friends. I don’t go though a single day with out my laptop nor technology becuase thats where the fun is :)

The only time its not an experience is when my computer crashes or BSOD’d on me which is never fun, but everything has been good so far.

That’s why i call my computer “XPERIENCE” .

Well i would have to say yea my computer does have a name. My Desktop Is Called Beast And Laptop Senior Beast really scary names but kind of cool.

My first computer was PC1; my second was PC2. It goes on like that – nothing unique or exciting.

Mine is Gizmo, from gremlins.
Now if i could only get it wet and make more computers hatch!! Of course they would all be evil. So naturaly they will have Vista without the option to remove UAC, and nothing will be compatible :\

Well yes i named mine dextor!!

I name my computers with the letter of the OS they start with.
My Compaq is Victor, for Vista, and it’s fast.
My Dell is Expelliarmus , the Harry Potter spell, because it’s a great gaming machine, and I run lots of FPS games on it.
And, my laptop’s name is xenagogue , because a xenagogue is a guide, and If you don’t treat the laptop right, it will not be nice to you. So, yes, I name my computers. Having trouble with naming the iPod Touch, though :)

Yes my computer name is Chris Pirillo

I generally name my comps after machines in movies/tv:

my linux router is named Ash (from Alien)

my file server is named Data (if you don’t know the origin, slap yourself..)

my ps3 is named ED209 (Robocop)

and my main windows desktop is named Hal9000 (cause i swear it’s trying to kill me sometimes..)

For network IP addresses, I use the first letter of the name to pick the number for the final octet: Ash is x.x.x.1, ED209 is x.x.x.5, etc.

I usually try to name my computers based on where they are located in my house.

Creatively enough, my machines are named Matt-1 and Matt-2 respectively. The workgroup is named Matt-NT. I have such a huge imagination. :)

I call my primary notebook “ADAM” and my secondary is “EVE” , and the other machines in our house is names after comics, like Obelix, Asterix etc.

Give them all a name from mythology
TITAN – Primary W2k3 server
HERCULES – Secondary W2K3 server
THOR – Vista Workstation
BACCUS – Secondary XP workstation / test
ZEUS – NAS
HERMES – Laptop

I call my computer OC_LAND
I use it for another purpose as well but for this purpose it means
“Obsessive Compulsive Land”

Been the case since i discovered computers about 1974 and hasn’t changed. After all I am writing this and it’s 2:30am I’d call that pretty obsessive.

The old Dell D3000 earned the name “Anemic Enema” while, due to the cost of building it, my new Linux machine is dubbed “The.Black.Hole”

That was AnemicEnema, before the censors got hold of it.

Our work computers are named according to the site code (3 character town, 2 character state, then HP or DL for brand, then their asset tag number…… so HOUTXHP1234567)

My home PC is “HPLAPTOP” (yeah I know, real original). but my desktops are YODA and VADER.

my desktop is called BigOne

What Do You Think?
