Do You Think Google Chrome is Just Another Web Browser?

In a few short hours from the time this was recorded, we all had our hands on Google Chrome. I feel this is a game changer in the way the World Wide Web works. I made up a list of five reasons that Chrome will soon become your default browser. You know Google, from Docs to AdSense to Earth. Google is here, and it’s a strong presence on the Web. Let’s look at the reasons I came up with:
- Google is focused on user experience. The experience is having a browser that does what you want it to do… browse the Web. Many developers don’t even think about that. I’m sure you have Google in your browser already, whether it’s a toolbar or your home page. Google has already shown us how they are focused on the users… YOU. Read the comic book documentation. It outlines for you why it’s pinpointing user experience, and what that means for you.
- It’s open source. You can take the code if you wanted to, and build your own browser. Take it and make it your own. The fact that it is open source is very telling. Google knows it is not in their best interest to lock the code away in proprietary measures. Chrome is open source because they are trying to make the Web better for everyone.
- Speed. Google has based Chrome on WebKit, which is optimized for speed. Google’s also developed a JavaScript engine to further enhance your browsing speed experience. You know how sometimes your entire browser will freeze occasionally, because of one site? With Chrome, that doesn’t happen, due to the way the JavaScript runs. Each tab is run as a separate process, instead of the browser as a whole.
- It will be cross platform soon. It is being released for Windows first, but will be available for OS X and Linux soon.
- Security. This is a big one. Google thought about the security model, all the way down to stop any kind of Phishing attacks within the browser. It’s constantly going to be updated with the latest Phishing information. Google Chrome also helps you to only log onto secure SSL connections whenever possible, and will warn you if the site you’re connected to is not secure.
Those are the five reasons I feel you need to pay attention to Google Chrome. Even if you think you aren’t ready to switch your browser, why not give it a try? You never know what you’re missing until you check it out.

Just reading about their communication with firefox since release, it looks like google is trying to create a browser innovation surge, though if chrome becomes popular its +++.

All the browser strive to fullfill your bullet points, the exception of open source; hence, it’s just another browser.
The so called advanced multi process approach is not new and used by IE.
The only technology I see as an advantage is, perhaps, V8. Maybe this will help speed up javascript significantly over the performance of other browsers.

Yup, its Speedy, Secure and all around efficient.. kudos for that! BUT… No customizations. For now I’ll stick with Firefox. (Anything but IE!) Chrome’s GUI looks so much like IE that it makes me want to puke! When Google’s Chrome is customizable with themes and extensions then I’ll think about it. Otherwise, the concept and implementation is surely something to brag about! Great job Google!

I have been trying it out for the past few days and I absolutely love it! Better than Firefox 3! It is definitely my new default browser!

Chrome will mean different things depending on who/what you are. The one thing it does mean to everyone though is that the Internet is the operating system, and the clouds are moving closer to earh.
You are Apple;
This means that if it were not enough of a conflict of interest (Iphone VS Google’s Android) to have Google CEO Eric Schmidt sit on your board – It is now. Look for Schmidt to resign sometime in the next six months.
If you are Microsoft;
This means that if you ever considered making Internet Explorer open source in the past, now is the time… You can not afford to wait, not even another minute. Expect Microsoft to make Vaporware like noise over the next few months about cloud widgets to give IE closer ties to cloud based initiatives.
If you are Yahoo;
you need to buy Mozilla.
If you are Firefox;
Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer…yes continue with your Google revenue deal, but learn how to monetize your Browser outside of a paid search deal. Leverage your large user base to form “spin-off” type “power of the crowd” businesses. Note to Firefox, hey you guys ARE a social network…you just haven’t figured that out yet.
If you are Sun;
Realize that Java is even less relevant every day. First we kicked you out of client side computing because you were a resource hog. Realize that Java will now continue to be less and less relevant on the Server. What a waste of a good company… McNealy must have got hit in the head with one to many hockey pucks.
If you are a social network;
“social networks” would follow along with users in the browser. Truth be told, we thought it would be Facebook, or even more likely Firefox that would lead in this initiative. So if you are a social network, you need to know now Chrome is the first step in a series of moves that will make it unnecessary for your peeeps to ever visit your site (directly) again.
If you are an application developer;
Life used to be simple, eh? You knew that you should be developing applications for Windows, because that is where the 100’s of millions of users were. Fast forward, and now you need to choose what platforms to support, and when. Of course it makes sense to develop for Windows still, but Apple now has a mass of millions of Mac OSx users, and if it a browser based app, write once for Safari, and it should work without much adaptation on the Iphone. There are over a billion cell phones in use world wide, however every phone requires writing to separately (yes even all those different flavors of Java are different phone to phone. Suddenly with Android coming, and a matching desktop browser you need to be here.
Lastly if you are a consumer;
There is always a bottleneck somewhere … Think back 5-10 years ago, before what we now refer to broadband… Dial up was painffulllllyy slow, and when you tried to browse, the bottleneck was in your “last mile” connectivity. Once you got broadband, the lag time in reaching a site was likely in your PC (not enough ram, slow processor, etc). Before either of those issues though it was the software that was not “smart” enough to keep up with the ever faster CPU’s being created.
Look for Chrome to optimize all these new “cloud” based application initiatives like Google Gears, etc. This is just another nail in the coffin for desktop based computing. In 10 years, likely 90%+ of your applications will reside somewhere outside of your home or workplace – but certainly not on your desktop.

Yes, I think it is just another out there, mostly because it runs off of open source things like the Firefox core, Gecko, and webkit. Frankly I will stay with Firefox unless Google intergrates Google Chrome with there other services, which I am guessing they will.

One thing that got my attention right away was how fast it loaded my web pages. And just the fact that its open source will guarantee it will be better than IE if its not already.

I really like Chrome. I feel it has a lot of potential now and even more when plug-ins are developed which everyone was complaining about on the first day. It hasn’t been buggy for me which is nice because I’ve had bugs in IE and FireFox before even when they already were well established browsers. I like the Omni Bar which just keeps everything simple with the buttons I only really use. The one thing I found odd was when I did a search it came up on Live Search. I said that was weird since this is Google Chrome, shouldn’t it default directly to Google. But that was easily changed. I give Google 10 out of 10 for not releasing some piece.

I am really impressed in what Google has done to the whole browser experience. Chrome is one AWESOME browser. And in my opinion, it goes just slightly faster than Safari on Windows (this could change in future builds.) Once Google tweaks up the UI in the settings and fixes some of the current bugs, Chrome could quite possibly be the next big contender in the browser war. I really hope that Google keeps advancing on this project.

I think that Google did a great Job with Chrome. Its a good browser even though Its only the First Beta of the Browser. Its a fast Browser ( well it running on Webkit which is what safari is on so that was expected) 3rd after safari and Firefox. Im sure that it will become faster because its so early in it beta stage but so far performance wise have been impressed. There are some problems though. I have notice that some Pages don’t scroll down and up smoothly. I’ve never had that issue with other browsers on those sites. Also sometimes some of the pages just crash but that’s when that Very useful Task Manager comes in handy. Instead of closing the whole browser or the whole browser crashing you now have the ability to close the bad tab. That was a very good part of the browser. I won’t be using it as my main browser. I’ll stick with Safari and Firefox 3 as my main Browsers but Chrome is good so far.

Chrome is definitely FEELS blazing fast, but as far as my everyday browsing habits go, I have to say that Chrome fulfills all the same needs that Firefox does without standing out in any other way. I like the ideas and features that are detailed in the comic, but as a user, I don’t often notice most of them (i.e. individual processes). But I’m sure that’s the point, to a certain extent.
Personally, I’m going to stick with Firefox 3 until Chrome comes out with some Firefox-like add-ons and more customization options.

I really don’t think we need another browser, what i think should be done, is to just get one browser, and make it completely customizable for any OS, and to make it have all kinds of addons, kind of like Firefox. But about Google chrome, I’m not going to judge it on other peoples statements about it, i haven’t used it, and i don’t think i need it, i don’t need a browser like Google chrome for what i do, there may be people that need to use it for everything. But im NOT one of those people, i only need plain old Google to look up parts, and any stuff for school, i really don’t think any of the addons would help me, i just think they would get in the way.

I am reading these comments and I can tell the majority of you have not done any research. The security on this browser is incredibly inneficient. Many company’s have banned the use of it (including mine) because of its security flaws. Also, in the coding aspect, the engine is loosely based off of the MAC’s safari browser. I would wait for the 2nd or 3rd update before using this browser, maybe by then you can browse on something a little less risky. Firefox by far is the best.

Hmmmm . . I.E., Firefox, Safari, and many others. . . what to choose.
Yes I am one of those that d/led and trialed Chrome, and my conclusion is. . . . Damn, I like it.
I usually use Avant Browser because it does everything I need it to do.
But with Chrome, the “Pro’s” are: Clean, superfast, and has plenty of real estate (a fact that no one else has mentioned this, or is it just me?). Can’t see text clearly? just hit cntrl (num) Plus to enlarge text. Too easy.
There are claims at the moment of potential “Dos Attacks” through Chrome, possibly, but is this true or just scare tactics from anti-google fanatics.
Just like everything else thats new, give it time to mature and we’ll have a very possible “Killer App” at our disposal.

I think Chrome is a great browser. Great UI but and faster than Safari on Windows. I would definitely recommend it. And I cannot wait for the Mac version.

It sure takes over, as bad as Apple’s quicktime used to.
I switched back to FF as the default in both Set Program Access and Folder Options, but chrome still shows up as default in windows explorer. I uninstalled it and my local server still keeps looking for it, so it wont’ open pages at all. So I had to reinstall Chrome. This really stinks. I like Google but I don’t like Chrome being shoved down my throate as the default.
