Do We Take Technology Advances Too Far?
In the name of being the best, technology manufacturers are constantly pushing out new product, along with updates to older generation devices. Often, these new gadgets boast something new and improved, making our lives better in some way. Once in awhile, though, we get a product that makes us scratch our collective heads and wonder what on Earth the company in question was thinking of.
Are companies pushing themselves TOO hard to create the next big thing? Are they sometimes sacrificing quality – and sometimes pushing things out too quickly – in the name of beating their competitors to the punch? I happen to think this is absolutely the case, and cannot help but wonder why it’s so all-fire important to hurry? What’s the rush? Where’s the fire? Why don’t these companies take their time to create something truly unique? In my mind, they’d sell far more units – thus making more money – were they to take the time to truly think things through prior to production and rollout.
What are your thoughts? Do you agree with me, or do you think I’ve lost my mind (again!)?

not so sure about gadgets specifically, but facebook seems to have this problem. Seems as if they are reinventing themselves without advancing! They keep redesigning and I don’t see any improvement! Just my 2 cents.
..and yes, you are crazy.

I Agree with you Chris, things have gotten very competitive and many companies are pushing in envelope just trying to get some attention. Sometimes they get controversial and not paying attention to quality or the common ideals of creating a product

You’re just getting a little older and wiser Chris. Your next epiphany will be when you are (literally or figuratively) mugged, and join the rest of us common-sense conservatives!

While this is certainly true of a good many manufactured products, I think it also applies to software products. A great many apps seem to put out ‘new’ versions monthly just to say that they did. In many cases they add maybe one new feature or tweak an existing one then advertise a ‘new & improved’ version. Frequently a year’s worth of new releases would scarcely add up to one new version.
Worse yet is the continual addition of new functions to the point that what was once a sleek and functional program becomes both a physical and virtual memory hog and the anti-thesis of it’s original bragging rights of superiority in it’s class. As an example, I would put Mozilla square in this category. Both Firefox and Thunderbird have become increasingly bloated over the last several years. User configuration has become more limited and many ‘nanny’ features have become mandatory with no way to opt out.
Oddly enough, IE8 is starting to look real good to me…

When a myriad of devices have to be commandeered to exchange two pairs of shoelaces, a transaction that normally would be less than three minutes takes 25, I’d say that technology far and away was inefficient use of it self.and my time and theirs.

yeah,…..but it should not be forgotten that nature and we humans will do suffer from it in the future

I feel that we may have scarifice quality in pursuit of pushing out new products every month, just so consumers can spend more money.
As far as I am concerned, every new technology is assumed guilty until proven innocent.

it took me a few minutes to ponder about what you wrote adn you kind of make a lot of sense. I believe the public in general has become harder to impress because of over hype of products and thays maybe why some of these have just left an unsatisfying taste.
Lets review the last 50 years and think what has truly revolutionzed the world… remember when they used to sell you the future with flying cars, sky cities and full meal pills, well, the space program was kinda unsatisfying because our expectations were so high, aside from that, lassers, teflon, microwave ovens, personal computers, cellphones, nes, the Internet, gps, plasma tvs, the iphone which in itself is not a new product but more an integrational device exceding anithing Spock ever had in his hand… Hey remember that touchscreen table a few years back, i didnt think it was a bad idea, maybe just ahead of its time… i hope they can salvage that and rethink it the right way someday.
So whats next? in my opinion the money is again on integration, interacting with and controling everything that you can via gestures, voice, mind??? who knows.. what do you guys think.
