I'm using Vista enterprise on a gateway tablet. Its So much better than tablet XP that I'm him with it. It works smoothly through day today life. I guess I'm a lucky one. knock on wood.

Once I get some free time [ in going to try to make the pen work with Ubuntu. The Linux distro runs twice as fast on a third the resources.
that's what I can value!

I don't know why I think this, but somehow I have come to the conclusion that Chris Pirillo believes if something is not broken, then you are well advised not to try fixing it.

From my viewpoint, the number 1 thing I am looking for in an OS to replace XP is 64-bit capacity -- which given the disdain I express for VISTA's DRM [if it is broken, don't use it] means some form of LINUX.

TheScynic, True XP had its problems at first, but they were no where near the problems that Vista is having. Not by a long shot. Vista is the worse M$ OS that I have EVER used and I do back to the DOS days.

There are many problems with Vista. Microsoft reports sales of Vista are lower than expected while XP sales are still in the 25% range. Considering that you can hardly get a new computer without Vista, that is a bunch of folks that are putting dollars down for XP rather than the new operating system. When XP first came out, it wasn't ready for prime time either. I would wait for at least the first service pack.

Vista is not a bad OS.... huh it's... well. My wife loves Vista. It's all in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I think Microsoft is trying to pull the same stunt with Vista as they did with ME. Now that's just _my_ opinion.

phantomdata. Yes there are many, many, many issues with Vista. It drove me to Ubuntu.

Vista's fine if you plan on doing nothing with it and never update your drivers and the like. Unless you like calling up India and beg to continue using your system under Vista after it mistakes the software update as new hardware and constantly deactivates itself?

Also I think that they can get a version of DX 10 that will run under XP.

I think if you have 32-bit hardware and you've been using XP successfully, then you should definitely stay with XP.

Now, if you have 64-bit hardware, then Vista is the way to go. The 64-bit version of XP (which is really a modified version of Windows Server 2003) has a LOT of issues (bugs) which I really don't expect Microsoft to fix.

I've had a good experience with Vista 64 on a dual core AMD with 4 GB of RAM. But I did disable AERO because I think it is gaudy and wastes energy.

LordKelvin; The UI is a matter of personal opinion. It is different, for sure. If you don't like different then you won't like the new UI - period. There are, however, lots of neat new features for people willing to change. Breadcrumbs in explorer, customizable "quick locations" for the folder listing in Explorer, Vista Sidebar, an improved event viewer and an integrated search function in the start menu. I really don't see why you would upgrade for DX10. It offers a marginal improvement in graphics at the expense of having to run the resource-hogging Vista in the background.

Jeb; Go for it. There aren't really as many issues as everyone complains about. Fully updated, Vista is good enough to run on production workstations without any issues. The interface is different and Vista will reduce game performance. For any of the more recent games you'll certainly need 2G of RAM under Vista to observe decent performance. On the definite upshot, your school will probably be switching to Vista soon and you won't be one of the people who can't find their way out of the paper bag.

Jed; I've never ran Vista 64 bit, but I know in 32bit land nVidia's drivers are quite stable - and probably won't do the blank screen thing for you. I almost wonder if it ended up being a monitor issue. Either way; Newegg's results for the 8800GT (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000380048+1305520548+106791921+1067932704&name=GeForce+8800GT) show that it seems to be quite popular - so much so that it's totally sold out on Newegg! Good luck!

I've been a Vista user since August of 07. I have Home basic and for Christmas I hope to upgrade to home premium, why? Because it has a lot of great features that I expected that Basic had, when talking tech I felt like I was an outsider to the vista community. Although, if you are upgrading, be sure to have at least 1GB of RAM.
If your going to get vista for Christmas then get home premium +. You can get it at the Microsoft site for about $79.
