Did NASA Fake the Moon Landings?

For years, I believed that NASA landed on the moon – until I read this:

The shot of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin planting the US flag on the moon’s surface was taken by a 16mm camera mounted on the Lunar Module. Aldrins shadow ‘A’ is far longer than Armstrong’s. Yet the only light on the moon – and the only light source used by N.A.S.A. – comes from the sun, and should not create such unequal shadows.

Then, I read NASA’s official statements on the moon landing hoax:

Not every waving flag needs a breeze — at least not in space. When astronauts were planting the flagpole they rotated it back and forth to better penetrate the lunar soil (anyone who’s set a blunt tent-post will know how this works). So of course the flag waved! Unfurling a piece of rolled-up cloth with stored angular momentum will naturally result in waves and ripples — no breeze required!

Of course, Dr. Bad Astronomy himself weighed in:

Of course a flag can wave in a vacuum. In the shot of the astronaut and the flag, the astronaut is rotating the pole on which the flag is mounted, trying to get it to stay up. The flag is mounted on one side on the pole, and along the top by another pole that sticks out to the side. In a vacuum or not, when you whip around the vertical pole, the flag will “wave”, since it is attached at the top. The top will move first, then the cloth will follow along in a wave that moves down. This isn’t air that is moving the flag, it’s the cloth itself.

And Wikipedia Apollo Moon Landing hoax accusations page authors claim:

Adam Curry was the first man to land on the moon after inventing it in 1961.

Me? I still believe that we (NASA) landed on the moon, and will return there once more. Yes, we will go to the moon. You will live in the stars. Your backyard will probably be Mars. You will ride a crater scooter – and eat off your computer. Oh, you will live in the stars. Your stellar smile will always beam. Knowing you’re home and home to stay. And you’ll look down upon the earth and say: “I can’t believe we ever lived that way!”

I don’t think they faked it.

No.

First? :-)

Seriously, the shadows of Armstrong and Aldrin are different because the lunar surface is sloped there. So one shadow is mostly on flat ground, and other dips into the slope.

Looks like that comment didn’t make it. What I meant to say was: No, I don’t think they faked the landing, though I do love reading a good conspiracy theory, and this is one of the best.

NO! Nasa did NOT fake the moon landings. I have never bought into this conspiracy theory. There is too much evidence that they did go there.

Moon landings? When did we have time to do that? ;)

FIRST!

I’m with you man, we were there.

holy crap, guess I wasnt.

Yes, they did. I saw them. I was there. For real.
:)

Fake moon landings? That’s for my crazy neighbor down the street to believe.

Wouldn’t there be two light sources on the moon?
1 – The sun
2 – The earth

Just as the moon illuminates our sky, why wouldn’t the much larger earth be a source of light reflecting from the sun?

Of course not.

I think they faked it.

did Pirillo use Twitter to fake interest in his blog?

Possibly faked.

Shadows falling in wrong directions, photo registration marks BEHIND things in shot, etc.

I love old conspiracies like this. ;)

No
I think you faked this post. Own up. Who wrote this! Those who question the moon landing, I never hear them about poor old Laika. I mean she was just a photo.

I’m dissappointed that this is even being discussed. We went to the moon… end of story… link bait!

How about this one. So are the recent Mars Rovers landings a fake Chris??

I don’t know if we did- but when I look at the actual technology they used back then to go at it- my mind boggles…

It better not be fake–otherwise my hopes of seeing lunar tourism within my lifetime have been utterly dashed! ;)

This is a test comment after moving your site. :)

LAST!

Last once again! Ha ha ha!

Perhaps I should get back to work instead of annoying everybody with useless comments.

Nah. I’ll keep on doing this.

YES! Yaye for the Moxy Früvous reference! :-D

Hey sorry Chris! Did I just kill this conversation ;-)

We’re not going back to the moon. We started getting too close to an alien moon base, and Nixon had to make a deal with them. We don’t go back and they don’t destroy all human life on Earth.

This deal has been disclosed to every president since. That’s why Bush is the first to have said we’re definitely going back. He’s insane and fantasizes about making Armageddon happen. If he can’t make the fire spread out of the Middle East across the planet, he’ll try to get it to rain down from space.

And if you believe that, I’ve got a bridge for sale.

I saw the documentary “The Dark Side of the Moon” and it was interesting. Here’s the website for it: http://www.moonmovie.com/moonmovie/default.asp?ID=6

I really don’t have an opinion either way. With conspiracies, both sides have the ability infinitely disprove each other and they usually do.

Ah, the post-modernist view of history:

“Since I wasn’t there, it didn’t happen. And because you weren’t there either you can’t prove to me that it did.”

The logic is flawless – when you ignore reality.

Cheers,

P.S Moon landing not faked. People will go back into space but NASA won’t be leading the way.

P.P.S. You were both lots of fun [and informative] at NV07’s online dating seminar.

There are a bunch of videos on youtube that make pretty good arguments for why we did not go to the moon. Im not positive, but I will say that I honestly have doubts. Search youtube for “A funny thing happened on the way to the moon”. ; )

I think there is a good deal of evidence to suggest that some of those pretty pictures they took may have been done in a studio, but that doesnt necessarily mean they didn’t go there. They probably did that as a backup knowing there was a chance that some of the material they took on the moon may have been unusable.

One thing has always bothered me though.

Surely, before landing on the moon with people they would have tried to qualify the take-off from the moon and the docking in lunar orbit. This is a critical mission phase which should have been validated, because the chances of missing the lunar orbiter could not be considered as small.

It therefore begs the question, why didn’t they fly a technology demonstrator for that critical phase of the mission? Can it be considered irresponsible that they didn’t, or am I missing something here?

With all the latest picture tech, like the google earth pictures, why not blow up pictures of the landing sites to see if the equipment let is actually there?

Hello

Listen, my Father worked in the LEM ( Grumman- Bethpage LI plant) program for years, I have all the photos, patches even the LEM Manual, so I can absolutely say with all honesty that we DID in fact go to the moon, and land on the moon.

:-)

We went to the moon. I’ll admit that some of the hoax/conspiracy theories sound pretty convincing at first. If you keep digging, then you will find that the hoax theories and their supporters lack credence. I’ve been researching the hoax theories because I’m a skeptic, and some of the alleged hoax evidence seemed plausible to me at first. It’s also likely that there are fake moon landing photos created by hoax theorists.

Check out this documentary “Lunar Legacy” on Youtube:

If you want to investigate a real conspiracy, then please research the building collapses on 9/11. The official theory explaining the ways in which three steel buildings (including building 7) collapsed is ludicrous. It falls into the category of “coincidence theory.”
The official report of the 911 commission supports a theory based on numerous coincidence. The convergence of these coincidences defies probability. Conspiracy theory is a much more plausible explanation than coincidence theory in the 911 case.

I think we did land on the moon. Remember hawking’s principle the simplest explanation is what probably happened. Also if anyone would have disproven the moon landing it would be the russians. Did they? No!

What Do You Think?
