Desktop Server Difference

We are typically talking tech here in our channel, and sometimes we even answer questions! PC Pitstop community member Richard asked why anyone would want to use a server as a personal home computer, and wonders what the advantages of doing so would be. There are some advantages, and I’m glad that Richard thought to ask about this!

You’d be able to use more hardware in that computer, but why would you need to? As a personal home computer, you likely only want to surf the web, play games and check your email. You won’t need a server for that.

The advantage in having a server is that you are better able to monitor and control what is happening on your network. If you have several computers in your home, this is the option you may want to go with.

Running a server – and a full network – isn’t easy. There’s a lot to learn. If it’s just for home and personal use, I don’t recommend going this route. Just use a “normal” computer setup. Why run up your costs buying more hardware for a server if you don’t really need it?
