Dell has again tried unsuccessfully to refuse to honor their $50 gift card which they send you after a large purchase. In the latest issue of Smart Computing Magazine the editor known as “Action Editor” has caused Dell to honor the card after the man complaining received the same underhanded treatment that I received. A Mr. Robert Bertin was refused by Dell after they tried to find an excuse. Even suggested that his card was in error.The action editor went to bat for Robert and Dell is offering him the discount on another purchase if he chooses to make one. I received the same treatment after already having Dell steal the operating system that I had paid for and substituting a cheaper version.

If you just can’t help yourself and want to buy a Dell product. Don’t mailorcer it from Dell. Dell will ship you what they can even if you’ve paid for an operating system, for instance, they will send you the cheapest one and pocket the difference. You’ll get a verification e mail which is worthless. They have good pc’s but buy it from somwhere like Walmart and don’t leave the store until you find out what Dell has stolen from the package. Your cd’s are marked and if they are ripping you off you’ll know by the cd title.

Dell has one more way to prove what thieves they are. If you get a free $50 gift card in the mail, throw it away or mail it back to Dell. You are never going to gt a $50 credit from that thieving company.
They will ask you to read off the numbers from the card pretending to notate them in order to get your,”gift.” They do a lot of pretending such as not shipping what you have alrteady paid for. Don’t bother calling to ask why. They have your money and plan to keep it. Myself and several others to whom I’ve spoken are not ordering any more Dells.

GOOD ADVICE. If you do get sucked into Dell’s web I’d advise you not to give them your credit card ID. I haven’t heard as yet about them stealing anyone’s ID but they are thieves. When they purposely steal an operating system that you have paid for it should be considered larceny. When you buy a pc with an OS included that’s what you expect to get. But watch closely. They have discovered that they can save a few dollars by giving you a lower version and then refuse to answer your complaint

Ok, now on the reality side of things, I am working on a Dell Latitude right now – with serious Attitude. I love this baby, except I have used it so much in the past 5 months that the paint is coming off of the keys. Oh well, it's still a rather sweet machine. I used an HP Omnibook for about 3.5 years before this one – and that amount of time along should tell you my testimony for that laptop. It was wonderful.

I looked at Dells but OUCH they're expensive! I finally settled with a Toshiba Satellite 2805-S402 which had a plethora of features such as a DVD/CD-RW, 20gb HD, 15″LCD (this was important), built in Intel ethernet and modem… Anyway it cost about $1500 this summer, now replaced by a newer model. I upgraded the RAM to 256 and got another battery, can't say too much for batt life, only 3hrs a piece but for my uses that's ok and I always carry a spare anyway. Regardless, Toshiba has a longstanding good track record for notebook PCs (the first ones I ever saw way back when were toshibas) and I'd hapilly buy another or reccommend them.

I love Dells, but have only used the desktops. I can't comment on the laptops. I'm currious to get your thoughts on them. Have worked in offices with mostly Dells and never had a problem. Just bought a 4300S for the house. Loving it!

I've got an Inspiron 7500 (the brick) I got from work and it's great! Haven't had any problems with it at all, it's sturdy as can be and I've had Win2k and RedHat 7.1 on it. Compaq laptops are EVIL though. Avoid em like the plague!

I have a Dell Inspiron. I have had no technical issues, but their financing department needs some serious lessons in customer service. Very abrupt when I call in person and their web site never loads the customer service section. I must also say, at an 18% interest rate I wish I had just waited and paid cash.
