Dear All SUV Owners…

YOU DO NOT OWN A COMPACT CAR. AT NO POINT IN YOUR SUBURBAN UTILITY VEHICLE'S LIFE WILL IT EVER TURN INTO A COMPACT CAR, SO STOP THINKING IT'S ANYTHING BUT AN SUV. YOU'RE NOT DRIVING A CAR, YOU'RE DRIVING A GAS-GUZZLING TANK. I DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR REASONS ARE FOR PURCHASHING SUCH A MONSTROSITY, BUT PLEASE (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL THAT IS HOLY) STOP TRYING TO PARK IN PARKING SPOTS CLEARLY MARKED FOR COMPACT CARS!!! BE A FOOL ON YOUR OWN TIME IN YOUR OWN DRIVEWAY, BUT STOP MAKING IT SUCH A PAIN FOR THE REST OF US WHO HAVE TO SHARE THE PARKING LOT WITH YOU. IF YOU'RE OVERCOMPENSATING FOR SOMETHING ELSE, GREAT. YOU'RE NOT A COMPACT CAR!!! YOU CAN'T FIT INTO A COMPACT CAR'S PARKING SPOT SO PLEASE STOP TRYING!!! IT'S SIMPLE PHYSICS! STOP IT!!! STOP IT!!! STOP IT!!!
Update: Okay, so I'm not mad at every single SUV owner out there. Perhaps my anger is directed at local (read: Seattle) SUV drivers, some of whom cannot drive, and many of whom don't know how to park. Space is limited up here in the city, and it's incredibly frustrating to watch an oversized vehicle try to park in a spot specifically designated for an “undersized” automobile. Not every SUV owner is an ID10T, but if you're one who takes up two spaces instead of one (or who tries to squeeze into a spot that can't accomodate you), then you're still being rude.

I am glad you got that off your chest. However, I have a converse view to get off of mine. You see all the compact spots all through the parking lots. This is fine. It is a way to get more vehicles in a lot. HOWEVER, where are the spaces for LARGE vehicles? There should be an ample amount for LARGE vehicles, trucks, SUV's, RV's, etc. Just as no LARGE vehicle should park in a compact spot, no compact vehicle should park in a LARGE vehicle spot. There should be equity. Once you start having SPECIFIC spots for LARGE vehicles, then the compact spots will be less attractive. (No foul words were harmed in this post)

Chris,
Get off your high horse and deal with it. Jesus.
I drive an SUV and so does my wife. As a matter of fact, we own his and hers Ford Explorers and I gotta tell ya, the very reason I did it was to annoy the **** out of whiny, snivelling, bitter little ***-wipes such as yourself that have nothing better to do than complain about “the big, meanie, gaz guzzling truckies” in your way.
You self-centered, egotistical, moron. Becuase you drive a tiny little lawn mower with a top speed of 80, you *demand* that society accomodate to your standards.
Next time you see an SUV nearly blow your crappy little POS off the road, take a glance, as the driver laughs maniacally and more than likely flips you off as he rushes past.
I'll be thinking of you next time I happily dish out $75.00 to fill up my *monstrosity*. It thrills me that we SUV Drivers just irritate you little pissants as much as we do.
Ahahahahahahahaa…

That is the point! There SHOULD be spaces for LARGE vehicles. Some of the standard spots are not big enough especially when people park right on the line (another rant). In this world of political correctness everyone screams for equity. Where is the equity in the parking lot?
I actually DID park in a compact spot one time. It was right next to a curb that had the shrubery in it. I pulled up on the curb with one part of my truck and was easily within the line for the person next to me. I came back and had a note on my truck. I was hoping it was from security. It wasn't. It was from some unhappy person that said 'the last time I checked, a 4-door F-250 pickup was not a compact vehicle'. They even signed it, '*******'.
I guess the alternative is to take up TWO compact spots instead of one LARGE spot.

Hm, I've never seen parking spots especially for compact cars — but then again I'm from a small town.
I have a little 4WD Honda Element for winter-driving (we get nasty snow here) and a Dodge Neon for nice weather. I tend to be one of those people who parks WAAAAY far in the back of the parking lot (no matter which vehicle I'm driving) in hopes that I don't get my doors banged or scratched. I don't mind walking the extra distance, haha.

Yup, the fat-assed American way. BIGGER, BIGGER, BIGGER. Most guys who buy these SUVs are trying to say, “Look, I've got a big **** too.” Well, most us know the scoop. And women who drive SUVs just want a ****. Hell, they probably put a potatoe in their pants to say, “Hey, check out my ****.” In reality the fools are the SUV drivers b/c they have to pay at pumps and get in the ***…just the way they like (male or female). So, **** for brains, while you are driving by those compact cars and laughing, just remember who's gettin' it in the ***.
Good for you Chris. Oh, most SUV people are pieces of **** trying to prove to the world that they have money…stupid fucknuts.

I agree and while they are at it don't park in spots at store fronts where others can't see when they back out. Cause you know the next idiot down are those who don't look for cars backing out from behind SUV's.

My H2 fits in most compact slots, but if doesn't, then I will move it. It is thought Fast and Furious wanna be's that take two spots that get my goat.

Chris,
Obviously, you've had a bad experience with a SUV today. Even so, I resent you lumping me into the 'evil SUV owners. My wife and I have 4 children and we just don't all fit into a Honda sedan anymore. If we want to travel together, a SUV is the only way.
There are just as many idiots who drive smaller cars as there are idiots who drive SUV's. They have compact car spaces not necessarily so that compact cars can park there but so they can fit more cars in the parking lot which means more money for the stores or whatever.
Sorry you had such a bad day, but maybe use a little more common sense as you wish us SUV morons would.

My license plate is RVDad and I make SUV owners look like environmentalist.

Chris is a panty-waist that has let what he imagines is fame go to his head. Dude you're a T-Shirt, the parking spot you think you deserve is filled by someone who has a more expensive vehicle they can afford. They were there first, deal with it.
And before you jump to conclusions I drive an old Honda with 170,000 miles on it but I don't long for an H2 or bang on the guy that owns it if that's what they like.

I think that with cities like Seattle, business places try to maximise on parking spots so it isn't likely to ever be any specific spots for bigger cars
It's just the way it is.

Um, Ponzi, can you get Chris to lay off the caffeine for a few days, please? We'll all appreciate it. :-)

Chris, quit being such a little twat and grow up.

Gee Chris, I wish you'd tell us how you really feel about SUV's.

Get over it! The only time I park my SUV in “Compact” spots is when all the regular sized parking spots are taken by small (even tiny) cars.
What makes you think I WANT to park in undersized spaces? You think this was a preference? You must be dumb as a brick to think I want some midgetmobile pounding my door getting in and out.
I will stop parking in the compact spaces when all of the compact cars in the lot ONLY park in the compact spaces.

I'm angry at all SUV owners. With few exceptions, they don't need to drive such absurdly large, inefficient vehicles. Choosing to drive such a vehicle when you don't need to lays bare one's ego and short-sightedness.

as a driver of both a geo metro and a mid-sized SUV i agree with cris one more thing remember 2 and a half tons of metal does not stop on a dime or turn as fast as a sports car and most importantly drive itself while you are talking on a phone
i would like a special endorsment on licences for anyone driveing a SUV, Van, or stepvan (i hold a class D licence and could get a CDL if i wanted) to prove they understand the physics of driveing a mass of metal like that

I have two kids, and with Scout trips, home repairs, and other tasks (not to mention Pennsylvania snow storms that must be dealt with), I am fine with my 92 Blazer, thank you so very much.
While Chris conceeded he was bashing all SUV owners, there have been a few childish posts from zealots who assume they know the real reason we own them.
Now I'll vent on small cars: I see small cars zip in between big-rigs all the time, and have wittnessed more than one accident caused by an idiot in a small car who also lacked the sense to realize an 18-wheeler can't stop on a dime any more than an SUV.
Bottom line is simple: Cars aren't inherently bad. Some drivers, however, are.

Americans drive SUVs because that is the only car that they can get their fat asses into.
A number of people have assumed that people who don't drive SUVs can't afford them. That's ignorant. If you have a larger family an SUV isn't the only option either. Look around.

I do agree some people purchase vehicles for looks and not functionality, I mean how many Cadillac Escilades with Dub Spinners really go off roadin' ? -and I am not talking about the dirt on the side of the road. Some people purchase vehicles for utililization, others status, others looks, others because it safe for environment, others for good gas mileage, other's to transport their offspring, other's because its fun, others because they like it, freedom of choice… We are all different and have different wants and needs - just ask PC and Apple users… :)
I can see Chris' angst at 'Bad and inconsiderate' drivers. How many times do you see a parking spot that is unparkable because a person can't park or take the time to park between the lines or just chooses to stradle 2 spots to protect their ride?
Too numerous…and each equally if not more aggravating when you spend a good amount of time looking for a usable parking spot.
In today's day and age you have to take the good and bad(sometimes its slanted one way or the other depending on how you look at it), but please, if you do read this be considerate for others in everything you do (I know sometimes you wish you were the only one on the roads, but ya aren't) and yeah I am talking to the people that cut me off, beeped and drove around me through an intersection because I had the “gaul” to stop at a red light instead of run it, stradled the line while talking on the phone, drinking a cup of coffee all while applying their makeup, and the ID10T that side-swiped the car in front of me, then swerved into the guard rail while reading a book this morning while driving to work…GET A CLUE!
There are others in this large blue marble we call home…please take the time to recognize them…because we are all we got now that SETI was cancelled…
Oh, please try and have a Happy Holiday and spread kindness whenever possible!!!

I guess I don't fit in the above categories. I don't drive a compact car or an SUV. I drive a Lexus RX330 LUV, which is a luxury utility vehicle.
Sounds like there is just a little jealousy coming out of the mouth of the biggest failure of the new millennium.
Don't blame us for working real jobs and being succesful and buying nice things.

I don't care what you all say about your precious SUV's. The point is, you are a typical, wasteful, American that wastes a NONRENEWABLE resource, drives up demand, thus inflating prices.
No, you do not have the RIGHT to squander a norenewable resource no matter how much money you have, or how important you think you are. Also, my parents got by in a decent sized car with three kids just fine without feeling the need to buy a HUGE TANK.
You guys think you are so cool, driving down the freeway with snow falling, thinking your big tires are gonna save you. I lived in Alaska for many years, and we scoff at you guys. The bigger you are, the bigger hole you make in a ditch off the side of the ride. Those with common sense know that.

I drive a Beetle, and I park in the larger spaces because if I park in the compact car spaces, some asshat with an SUV invariably parks in the compay car space next to me and scrapes my doors.
The price I pay for driving a wee car is that I can't put as much stuff in the trunk and backseat as I'd like- an adult can't sit comfortably in my backseat. But the tradeoff is that I can squeeze my little car into almost any space.
Conversely, an SUV driver gets the ability to haul just about anything in his or her vehicle, pile a bunch of people in, whatever. That's great if you need that, but the tradeoff is that you don't fit into every parking space, so don't try and thereby damage all the other vehicles around you in the process.

What so many here fail to realize is that the point of the original post was simply that compact spaces are for the exclusive use of compact cars. SUV drivers who park in those spaces aren't being courteous because while the SUV may “fit” between the lines, they are so large that it can be very uncomfortable for the next car over to get in and out of the doors.
Compact spaces are the equivalent of carpool lanes on busy freeways; reserved for use by those who, one way or another, are taking extra effort to conserve resources (gas, sheet-metal, real-estate, etc.). Like it or not, my poor, victimized, SUV driving friends (and, my, weren't we being defensive?), compact cars may also park in full-size spaces, just as cars with more than 2 people can drive in the regular lanes on a busy freeway. The compact spaces are a priviledge for compact cars and their drivers that results in more spaces for everyone - so long as everyone plays by the rules.
Oh, and to the driver of the so-called “Luxury Utility Vehicles”. This is a BS category, meant to make the owners feel better. The bottom line is that they aren't compact either. Suck eggs, you pompous ***.

I thought you had more class. Your just like the hollywood crowd a little fame and you run the world. GET A LIFE CRIS

Well, this thread is almost a year old… But quite funny all the same. Just go to Google and type in “SUV safety” and look at all the links that come up (including suv.org from Friends of the Earth). I think that anybody who drives an SUV falls in one of two categories: Misinformed or Inconsiderate. Here’s a brief breakdown of those categories.

The Misinformed are told (or assume) that SUVs are safer for their children, safer for them, carry more load, etc. The truth is (and there are several sources, including the NHTSA, that confirm this) that SUVs are dangerous - to you and to everyone else. They are built on a loophole in the law that classes them as light trucks, so they are not bound by the safety laws that other cars must meet. Automotive manufacturers will tell you ANYTHING to sell you one as their profit margins are HUGE - the average SUV brings in anywhere between $12K and 20K in pure profit. In this world you get what you pay for, and if they are making so much profit, how do you think they are building your huge vehicles? Can anyone say “shortcuts”? There are many high quality vehicles that are just as comfortable as an SUV, and can carry MORE than an SUV (e.g. The Audi RS6 Avant - which also comes with 4WD, 500BHP+, and all the safety ratings required of a road-going vehicle). Then, of course, there are the environmental concerns, which are mostly covered up. Most people expect that “modern” vehicles must be made to a specific standard, but they are not told of the “light truck” loophole that means the SUV does not need to meet strict emissions and fuel consumption guidelines.

The other category, the Inconsiderate, are unfortunately where a large number of SUV owners fall. The ones who park in compact spaces (and Ad-Zilla is correct - it is a privilege reserved for people who are willing to “sacrifice” and not purchase an anti-social vehicle), the ones who don’t care how much the SUV pollutes, the ones who don’t care that they are more likely to KILL other people. These are the same people who buy the SUV thinking it’s a status symbol. Thinking it costs a lot of money. Well, my compact car costs a lot more than your SUV (a Porsche), and yet I get high fuel efficiency, I meet all EPA and CARB emissions standards, I’m not a danger to other people on the road, yet I can also leave virtually anyone in the dust and I get a lot of attention if I want it. I don’t need spinning alloy wheels either (which are another danger of their own).

Unfortunately SUVs now make 50% of the sales in the US, and that will probably keep growing. The American population are (generally) highly opinionated, and the more you tell them NOT to get something, the more they will want to get it. The large physical size and imposing nature of the SUV fits the American personality so well, which is what (probably more than any other reason) has made them so popular. It is well known - world-wide - that the US is famous for the BIG IS BETTER mentality. Bigger displacement (”No replacement for displacement”), bigger cars, bigger buildings, bigger food portions, bigger people, bigger pets, bigger everything. No matter if it kills your neighbor. Also, several studies have shown that people like the “evil” looking large SUVs as they can intimidate other drivers to get out of the way. I’ve had SUVs tailgating me before, and knowing SUV structural design and engineering, I sometimes want to get out of their way (rather than have to exceed the speed limit by too much).

Of course, not all Americans are like this - but unfortunately a sizable (and very vocal) portion of this society ARE like this (backed by numerous studies).

I, for one, actually hope that gas prices continue to rise exponentially. Auto manufacturers have already seen a dip in people (especially in California) buying SUVs and opting for more fuel-efficient vehicles. The only way to convince people is to hit them in their pocket on a daily basis. Seeing gas stations with $6.00/gallon price tags will do the trick, I’d wager.

Appealing to the better side of people in the US is a lost cause. I completely expect some foul mouthed SUV driver to get ultra defensive with me (if anyone is still reading this thread, of course), citing their own personal views. Unfortunately, everyone thinks they are a saint and it’s NEVER their fault (thats another problem with this society - nobody takes responsibility for their actions, hence the extremely disproportionate amount of ridiculous lawsuits).

Thanks,

S.

I think you have a great point Chris! What does the SUV or any vehicle say about a person? You want to know who someone is, just look at how they spend “their” money. I drive a very fuel efficient Toyota Corolla. What does this say about me? hopefully it says that I’m well rounded and a good steward of the world and friend of the people around me. I feel like the SUV is a reflection of the people who drive them. The gist that I get from them [SUV owners] is that they are really weak people inside, like an overgrown playground bully, or a really anxiety ridden individual - like a soccer mom. I was almost run off the road by a careless SUV driver and I’m really pissed off that SUV owners think they can run over everybody else on the road and put their own safety ahead of everyone else’s. Where I come from, we call these people selfish and rude( whether they like it or not ). These [SUV Drivers] are the same worthless members of society who were once cheerleaders, jocks, or well connected kids in school. Nobody seems to care until one of these pricks gets a taste of there own medicine. Do I worry about them? No. If they keep acting stupid and careless, fate will take them; however I do pray that fate takes them without harming the rest of us, but that is yet to be seen. Another issue is that many of these [SUV owners] use a credit card to “buy” these tanks and never fully pay for them or the gas they burn with them. I’m outraged. By the grace of God, I live within my means and pay my bills in full. SUV owners can only be so reckless with only so much before it does cost everybody something. God help us. On a lighter note, funny thought—> Want kinder SUV drivers? Remove their airbags and put an anvil in its place. LOL - Seriously though, Please Drive Safely.

I’m stand here with the countless many who hate SUVs. I live in southwest Florida, where quite frankly, there are too many vehicles period, let alone these metal monstrosities. I think my biggest objection is the attitude and driving habits of SUV owners. At least here, they are the rudist and most pushy drivers one could imagine! They evidentally think their **** doesn’t stink because they own one. My other beef is that you cannot see around, over or through them. It’s like driving behind a metal mountain! Another thing. The designers of these things must be on crack! If you insist on building them, PLEASE at least make them stylish, rather than looking like storage sheds on wheels (actually THAT would look better). A new definition of SUV: S tupid U seless V ehicle!

I love driving my SUV. The reason I have it is because I got sick and tired of my little 4 banger getting stuck in a foot of snow and having to walk home and ask my husband to tow it home with the pickup. I live on a hill and winter can be brutal around here. Plus I need the extra room for my dogs as well as my tack for my horse. I board and have to lug things back and forth (no room to store everything at the barn.) I’m not a daredevil behind the wheel, I learned how to drive using my Dad’s full sized Jimmy (not one of those wussie things that came out in the 80’s) and my Mom’s Silverado with an 8 ft bed. Anyways…. my biggest gripe is all those stupid drivers out there who think they’re invincible like the idiot who passes people on snow covered roads like their standing still or someone driving some little shitbox that cuts me off. My other gripe are those people who call SUVs cars. Never call an SUV a car. I drove a car for a long time and never will again. If I wanted a car I would have bought one.

in the UK all parking spaces are made big so that any size car can park in them none of this compact parking bull they have in the USA only time its hard to park a car is when a ****** has not parked there car right

yea, I have a Jeep Cherokee and it’s considered a SUV…but really it’s not that much like an SUV. My dad calls it my station wagon. I hate that name…even though it’s on my title. I prefer SUV, cause it shouldn’t more manly. For an SUV I get about 20mpg in the city. So It’s not to bad. If I came to Seattle I don’t think you’d get mad chris because it’s fairly small.

I love the whiners that ask why isn’t there spots for large vehicles. Compact spots are there because they are in spots where people are cutting around corners or there isn’t enough room in the aisle. If an SUV is parked in one of these spots it increases the likelihood of somebody hitting it. That’s why these are marked COMPACT, to protect you SUV owners from walking out to a ding on your precious vehicle. Stop whining! Your vehicle can fit in any other spot.

What Do You Think?
